implementation of report
By Chioma Onuegbu
Emmenuel
U YO—GOVERNOR
Udom Emmanuel of
Akwa Ibom State has set
machinery in motion to
implement the
recommendations of the
report of the Commission of
Inquiry into the collapse of
Reigners Bible Church
building in, Uyo.
The state Commissioner
for Information and
Strategy Mr. Charles
Udoh, in a statement
yesterday in Uyo, said the
state Attorney General and
Commissioner for Justice,
Mr. Uwemedimo Nwoko,
had been mandated to
commence the process of
taking appropriate actions
against all persons found
culpable in the church
building collapse on
December, 10, 2016.
Udoh said this came after
a detailed review of the
report which the
Commission of Inquiry,
headed by Justice
Umoekoyo Essang (retd),
submitted to the governor
in June, 2017.
He said: “Following the
collapse of Reigners Bible
without any objection at
the Senate seeks to
convert Federal
Polytechnic, Auchi to City
University of Technology.
Speaking on the bill
before it was put to vote,
Deputy President Ike
Ekweremadu who
presided over plenary
drew the attention of the
Senate to the current
strike by university
workers and the impact
Church building in Uyo on
December 10, 2016, the
governor of Akwa Ibom
State, Mr. Emmanuel,
constituted a Commission
of Inquiry to investigate the
circumstances which led to
the unfortunate incident
and recommend measures
to forestall future
occurrence.
“After a detailed review of
the commission’s report, the
governor has set in motion
necessary machinery to
implement the
recommendations of the
Prosecute INEC officials involved in
registration of minors —Ukweni
By Ike Uchechukwu
CALABAR—A legal
luminary, Mba
Ukweni, SAN, has called
on federal agencies
including Independent
Corrupt Practices
Commission, ICPC, to
prosecute all those involved
in the registration of
underage persons in some
parts of the country.
Ukweni who spoke with
Vanguard, yesterday, in
Calabar, lamented the
continuous registration of
on the educational
system.
The Senate also asked
the Committee on Tertiary
Institutions and
TETFUND to as a matter
of urgency, look into the
dispute with a view to
getting the workers back
to work, just as it urged
the committee to look into
fair distribution of share of
federal institutions across
states and senatorial
report. The Attorney
General
and
Commissioner for Justice
has been mandated to
commence the process of
taking appropriate actions
against all persons found
culpable in the church
building collapse.
“All cases of proven
professional negligence
will be dealt with decisively
within the ambit of the law.
Similarly, all verified
outstanding bills for
treatment of victims in the
various hospitals in Uyo
underage people which
according to him, was
portraying the country’s
image negatively and
making the electoral
process laughable.
His words: “The
Independent National
Electoral Commission,
INEC, officials who
indulged in registration of
underage people should be
brought to book and
prosecuted for corruption.
The age of voting is 18. It
is wrong for INEC officials
to register under age
districts.
In his lead debate,
Senator Alimikhena said,
“I am excited by the
prospect of transforming
this polytechnic to a
university of technology,
not because it is based in
my senatorial district, but
because it will motivate
both students and
academic staff, just as it
will upgrade its facilities
and enhance its capability
to achieve its objectives."
have been fully paid up by
the state government.
“Government also
extends its gratitude to the
various hospitals and
clinics in Uyo that attended
to victims promptly.
“While reiterating its
avowed commitment to the
protection of lives and
property, the Government of
Akwa Ibom State once
again commiserates with
families of the victims of the
Reigners Church building
collapse and prays the
Almighty God to comfort
them,” Udoh added.
persons.
“This is part of corruption.
Corruption is not just
somebody taking money.
Anything that is done
improperly in order to
obstruct the proper course
of things is corruption.
Registration of underage
people is corruption, so it
should be investigated.
“Government should
investigate and ensure that
people who do that are
brought before the
appropriate agency for
prosecution."
