REPEATABILITY 

The Mitsui Seiki PJ812 Precision Profiling 

Centre is designed to provide ultra-precision 

boring and contour machining through the 

company’s MAMS (Mitsui Accurate Milling 

Support) thermal monitoring system where 

accuracy and repeatability within +/- 1 

micron and an accuracy of programmable 

feed rate consistency that is within 0.0001 mm. 

The Mitsui Seiki product range is supplied 

and serviced in the UK by 2D CNC Machinery 

based in Hinckley with this 3-axis CNC 

(‘Mother Machine’) designated vertical jig mill 

type developed for processing highly 

demanding workpieces typical of optical, 

medical, aerospace and specialist mould and 

die sectors. 

Capacity in X-axis is 1,200 mm, Y 800 mm 

and Z 500 mm with a table working area of 

1,200 mm by 800 mm. The mechanical design 

focus was on the planer-style symmetric 

construction to maximise rigidity to achieve 

super high grade tolerance levels based on 

hardened and ground tool steel slideways. 

The machine also incorporates Mitsui Seiki’s 

latest ‘sliding mechanism’ development 

where contact slideway elements, not only to 

enhance levels of acceleration, but also to 

minimise stick-slip which enables claims for 

the Z-axis having some six-times greater static 

rigidity than more conventional Z-axis 

machine tool designs. 

A thermal compensation system reduces 

any influence of temperature change or 

temperature-generated displacement by 60 

per cent on workpiece accuracy due to 

integrated sensors housed on the machine 

faceplate and within the spindle. Further 

gains are made with the MAMS multi-sensor 

system on the Z-axis, which reduces thermal 

growth and deflection by 30 per cent. In 

addition, to help maintain stable rates of axis 

feed within 0.0001 mm that contributes to the 

holding of high orders of surface finish, a 

centralised cooling system is incorporated 

within the sideway lubrication as well as the 

core of each ballscrew to stabilise the precise 

operation of axis feeds..

MAKES SIGNIFICANT INVESTMENT 

New Mikron HPM 800U 5-axis machining 

centre cuts new gearbox insert components

In 2017 GF Machining Solutions, the 

EDM, 3- and 5-axis machining centre and 

laser machine tool and automation solutions’ 

specialist, supplied Renault Sport Formula 

One Team with four new Mikron highperformance 

5-axis machining centres. 

The machines - two Mikron HPM 800U’s 

and two Mikron HPM 1350U’s - have been 

installed at Renault Sport Formula One 

Team’s manufacturing facility in Enstone, 

Oxfordshire where they are being put 

through their paces machining a range of 

high-precision, complex race car components 

made from difficult-to-machine and 

challenging materials that include highgrade 

titanium alloys. 

The investment in advanced machine tool 

technologies from GF Machining Solutions 

Bristol-based Vigilance Group, the 

engineering specialist holding company that 

incorporates under its corporate banner - 

Machine Tool Sales Online, MACH Machine 

Tools and Vigilance Engineering Safety 

Products - celebrated its tenth anniversary in 

2017. 

As well as being a landmark year for the 

Group, 2017 also marked a significant 

milestone for Group managing director, 

Dave Andrew, who (in November) 

celebrated 30 years in the machine tool 

industry. 

However, despite such a long and 

illustrious past, the Vigilance Group and its 

founder have their sights very much focused 

on the future and have implemented a 

number of plans and initiatives designed to 

ensure the Group’s long-term growth and

nothing new and reflects the close, 

longstanding ‘Technical Partner’ relationship 

that exists between the two companies. 

This relationship, the longest in the 

Team’s history has, over recent years, seen 

GF Machining Solutions supply, not only a 

number of 5-axis machines to the Enstone 

facility, but also a range of the latest, highperformance 

AgieCharmilles EDM wire and 

die-sink machines too. 

As a result of its latest investment Renault 

Sport Formula One Team now has ten 

Mikron 5-axis machines at its disposal. 

To improve its machining capacity and 

capabilities it was decided, in early 2017, to 

trade-in a Mikron HPM 600U machine 

(acquired a few years earlier) against the 

purchase of two new HPM 800U models.

Team, “The HPM 800U machines, since their 

installation in 2017, have proved their worth 

and are being used to machine a diverse 

range of parts that include front and rear 

suspension uprights and roll hoops etc. They

from titanium.”

RETROFITS BOOST QUALITY AND PRODUCTIVITY 

ESAB, a world leader in welding and cutting 

technologies, has retrofitted two Suprarex 

plasma cutting machines with new CNC and 

plasma cutting systems for a longstanding 

customer, Eddison & Wanless. One machine 

was 12 years old and the other was five years 

younger, but both have been retrofitted with 

identical m3 Plasma systems so Eddison & 

Wanless is benefiting from improved cut 

quality and higher productivity. The complete 

retrofit project cost substantially less than 

buying two all-new plasma cutting machines, 

yet Eddison & Wanless is benefitting from stateof-the-art 

plasma cutting capability. 

Eddison & Wanless manufactures highquality 

oil tanks, water tanks and air-tight tanks 

in mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium. 

These are used in the petrochemical and process 

industries, offshore oil platforms, marine and 

dockside applications, heavy industry and 

mining and mineral sites. Eddison & Wanless 

was founded in the late 1950s and has had a 

relationship with ESAB for more than two 

decades. Around 15 years ago Eddison & 

Wanless purchased an ESAB Suprarex plasma 

cutting machine, and five years 

later the company invested in a 

second similar Suprarex. These 

two machines proved to be 

robust and reliable, with 

Eddison & Wanless ensuring 

they were regularly serviced by 

ESAB. However, as the 

machines aged, maintenance 

costs started to creep up, so 

ESAB suggested retrofitting 

new equipment to bring the 

machines up to date, improve 

cut quality, raise productivity 

and reduce maintenance costs. 

Andy Benson, the Managing Director of 

Eddison & Wanless, takes up the story: “We 

have worked with ESAB for 22 years and have 

established a very good relationship with them, 

so when they suggested the retrofit I knew I 

could trust what they were telling us; after all, 

plasma technology had evolved considerably 

over 20 years. When we compared the cost of 

retrofitting new plasma systems with the cost of 

buying new machines, it was an easy decision 

AMADA SOFTWARE CUTS BENDING TIME 

When one of the UK’s largest and most 

successful laser profiling and fabrication 

subcontractors wanted to enhance its 

CAD/CAM capabilities for press-braking 

operations, the company turned to AMADA 

UK. Duly acquiring AMADA’s Production 

Designer CAD and VPSS 3i BEND software 

suites, the company has reduced its press 

braking cycle times by up to 50%. 

Since its foundation in 2000, SSC Laser 

Cutting has grown to become a major UK force 

in precision laser profiling and fabrication, 

today operating across three manufacturing 

sites in Stafford, Derby and Bristol, with plans 

to expand in the north east and north west. 

Markets served include street furniture, 

pharmaceutical, retail, marine, rail, architecture, 

construction, automotive, agriculture and oil 

and gas, to list but a few. 

Although using an array of AMADA press 

brakes, including two HFE-130 M2 tonne 

machines, a HFE-8025 tonne model, and a HD- 

1703 long-stroke machine, until recently SSC 

had been restricted by the use of basic 

CAD/CAM software. 

“To be honest, the software capability for our 

press brakes was a little old school,” admits 

SSC’s Group Production Manager Julian Till. “It 

was slow and not enough information would 

reach the press brake operator, which in turn 

would lead to occasional incorrect 

developments. In addition, time studies told us 

that we were spending longer setting up the 

machines than actually bending parts. With this 

in mind, offline programming and planning 

ahead were the clear next steps for our business.” 

SSC reviewed the market for cutting-edge 

CAD/CAM software that would be able to 

streamline the press-braking process. 

“We’ve had AMADA press brakes for many 

years, and although we looked at other options, 

it was apparent that using AMADA software 

was the way to go,” says Mr Till. “The software 

is designed for use with AMADA machines and 

is future-proofed accordingly. In addition, it 

handshakes nicely with many other software 

packages.” 

Following an in-depth analysis of the 

software, in July 2017 SSC purchased both 

AMADA’s Production Designer and VPSS 3i 

BEND for its headquarters near Stafford.

to make – the retrofits made perfect commercial 

sense. The upgrades cost us in the order of 

£100,000 but the payback period will be 

between two and three years.” 

ESAB planned the retrofit project so that 

Eddison & Wanless would always have one 

machine fully operational. From beginning to 

end, the work took around one month. Andy 

Benson is very pleased with the result, saying: 

“The cut quality is noticeably better, 

particularly on holes. And whereas we used to 

be restricted to cutting holes one-point-five 

times the material thickness, the improved 

machines cut holes the same diameter as the 

thickness, which often eliminates a drilling 

operation. Furthermore, the machines cut faster 

without compromising quality. Overall, we 

have therefore seen a marked improvement in 

productivity.” 

Previously the two Suprarex machines were 

slightly different, but now they both have 

identical plasma systems. This simplifies 

production planning and part programming, 

and will also help maintenance in the long run. 

Another benefit of the upgrades is that the 

machines can now cut and mark, with no need 

to change the torch or nozzle between cutting 

and marking operations. 

ESAB's m3 Plasma system uses Micro 

nozzles for cutting thinner plate at high speed 

and improved cut quality with Precision Hole 

Technology as well as providing marking 

capability, all using the same torch and nozzle. 

The m3 system also supports SmartCycle 

Technology for increased productivity through 

full integration of the CNC controller, plasma 

system and CAD/CAM/nesting software. 

A vital component of the m3 system is the 

EPP-362 power supply that provides precise 

control of the plasma current (up to 360 A) 

using all-digital control circuitry, and a highspeed 

data bus connection ensures precise 

control of the current and gas pressure, as well 

as enhanced diagnostic capabilities, including 

advanced status and process monitoring. For 

maximum reliability, the power supply has an 

internal coolant circulator to maintain the 

operating temperature at a constant, controlled 

level.

COURSES 

ESAB has published its schedule of Gas 

Inspectors Training Courses for 2018. These 

will be held at ESAB's facilities in Waltham 

Cross and Chorley, and there are courses 

for both certification and re-certification. 

Following satisfactory completion of the 

course examination, successful candidates 

are presented with a City & Guilds 

Certificate, indicating that they are 

qualified to conduct full safety checks on 

individual oxy-fuel gas welding systems. 

ESAB's courses are the only ones in the UK 

at which attendees can gain an 

internationally recognised City & Guilds 

qualification. 

Certification courses run over two days, 

with classroom sessions, participative 

exercises and hands-on training. Not only 

does the course cover the safety of the oxyfuel 

welding equipment, but it also provides 

instruction on relevant health and safety 

legislation and risk assessments of welding 

stations. One-day re-certification courses are 

available for inspectors who already have 

C&G certification. 

Each candidate on the certification course 

receives a detailed manual containing stepby-step 

processes for inspecting and testing 

regulators, hoses, safety devises and 

blowpipes. In addition, candidates received a 

comprehensive toolkit for carrying out 

inspections and tests. 

The Gas Inspectors Certification course is 

designed to meet the needs of safety officers, 

maintenance staff, supervisors, technical 

college and school lecturers, and anyone else 

who has responsibility for the safety of oxyfuel 

welding and cutting equipment. 

Certification courses cost £525 + VAT, 

which include tuition, course material, 

inspection and test manual, toolkit, 

accommodation and meals; re-certification 

courses cost £240 + VAT.

FANUC has launched its latest ROBODRILL 

series – the strongest and quickest range of 

vertical machining centres on the market. 

The a-DiB5 series represents the latest 

automated vertical machining technology for 

milling, drilling and tapping applications, 

incorporating network interface, preventative 

maintenance and machine learning 

capabilities, alongside FANUC’s industryleading 

CNC drives and servos. 

It includes six re-designed models in 

small, medium and large sizes, with standard 

or advanced functionality available. The 

series is suitable for both short production 

runs and mass production. 

“The launch of our latest range for 

ROBODRILL is an exciting step-up for 

FANUC’s automated vertical machining 

capabilities,” says Andrew Armstrong, sales 

and marketing manager at FANUC UK. “As 

well as incorporating the high-repeatability 

and accuracy for which FANUC is widely 

recognised, this series offers unprecedented 

capabilities within Industry 4.0 and machine 

tending. 

Each a-DiB5 machine is designed for 

minimal maintenance, thanks to a robust 

build quality, low number of parts, and a 

turret capable of handling tools of up to 4kg. 

The likelihood of machine faults or 

unexpected downtime is also reduced, thanks 

to the ROBODRILL’s rugged cast cross table, 

dynamic BBT30 spindle (with speeds 

between 10,000 and 24,000 rpm), and multiple 

swarf evacuation options. 

The range can achieve cut-to-cut speeds of 

1.5 seconds for standard models and 1.3 

seconds for the advanced. The advanced 

model also holds the quickest tool change 

time on the market, taking 0.7 seconds to 

change between up to 21 different tools.

NEW RE-ENGINEERED DRILL RANGE INCREASES TOOL LIFE 

Featuring a new re-engineered design, Seco's 

range of Perfomax indexable insert drills 

deliver exceptional drilling performance and 

longer tool life as well as improved chip

innovative features include a new flute 

design with special anti-friction surfaces and 

laser hardened fronts that provide added

The drills’ flutes have larger helixes and

drilling heat resistant materials like titanium 

and titanium alloys. These grades, with their 

recently-developed free-cutting MP and MC

Proving that machining centres are the 

mainstay of UK manufacturing is plain to see 

following a spate of recent installations spread 

across a raft of different industries. Perhaps the 

most common sector in UK industry is general 

subcontracting, where companies such as 

Banbury-based DJM Engineering are among 

several on the investment trail. 

DJM recently acquired an XYZ 500LR 

vertical machining centre, the first of its type in 

the UK, to handle the company’s requirement 

for one-off and small batch work. A Siemens 

828D control was supplied with the upgrade to 

Shopmill software, along with Renishaw Primo 

tool and work probing as part of the overall 

package. 

“We are impressed by the capabilities of the 

XYZ 500LR machine, and are not holding back 

on speeds and feeds across a range of 

materials,” says director Colin Merry. “The 

machine is more than capable of maximising 

modern cutting-tool technology, and provides 

us with a working envelope that is ample for 

our needs in a compact footprint.” 

At another subcontractor, March-based 

Microns Precision Engineering, the company’s 

fleet of Haas machines has been boosted to 10 

following the arrival of a Haas VF-2SS Super 

Speed mill. 

“We can use the Haas machine for 

everything,” states co-founder James Campbell. 

“Right now we’re making DTS nanopositioning 

equipment, which is mounted to 

lasers and microscopes, so the parts have to be 

dead flat. The accuracy on the VF-2SS is 

incredible, and it’s undoubtedly the fastest 

machine we have. The tool changer is so speedy 

that our jobs are noticeably quicker, which 

makes the whole process more efficient. 

“This is our second Haas with four-axis 

capability, which gives us a flexibility we hadn’t 

seen previously,” he adds. “As the controls are 

the same on all of the machines, we can switch 

from one to another in no time. We’ve come 

back to Haas time and again because we know 

we’ll always get quality.” 

Plenty of sector-specific companies are also 

turning to the latest machining centre 

technology. For instance, Derby-based 

Riverside Medical Packaging has installed a 

new Quaser MV 184 PH from the Engineering 

Technology Group to help support a ramp up in 

volumes.

“As part of our expansion, 

we needed a new vertical

machining centre that offered us speed, 

accuracy and the ability to easily set and 

manufacture a variety of parts,” says Alan 

Wade, works and engineering director. “After 

much consideration and searching for the best 

option, we decided on the Quaser MV 184 PH. 

It took just six weeks to get the machine into our 

Derby facility, signed off and producing various 

parts in volumes ranging from 2000 to more 

than 35,000 per annum.” 

Continuing the medical sector theme, 

Mildenhall-based CTPE was having difficulty 

producing aluminium covers for a medical 

housing in two operations quickly enough on 

an ageing, 40-taper, three-axis machining centre 

after the customer raised the call-off rate to 100 

per week. However, a new production route 

proposed by Whitehouse Machine Tools based 

on the supply of a Japanese-built 30-taper 

machining centre from Brother, also a three-axis 

model, promised to solve the problem. So, a 

Brother S700X1 was duly installed in August 

2016, after which the cycle time was indeed 

reduced by 50% to one hour. 

Such was the success of the project that, 

when a second multinational company in the 

medical sector asked for a new family of 6061 

aluminium parts to be produced, CTPE had no 

hesitation returning to Whitehouse for an 

identical S700X1, this time fitted with a two-axis 

Nikken table. The company reports that the 

smallest cycle-time saving achieved to date by 

swapping an existing job on to an S700X1 is 

40%. 

The energy sector is at last beginning to 

show signs of revival, and with it, renewed 

investment. A case in point can be seen at 

LoneStar Leeds’ Precision Components 

Division, where a Hartford Super vertical 

machining centre supplied by TW Ward CNC 

Machinery has halved machining cycle times on 

oil and gas industry gate valves. 

“Being able to achieve such fantastic time 

savings with the Hartford is also enabling us to 

move other workpieces on to the machine, to 

absorb the extra available capacity,” explains 

operations director David Tennant. 

“The Hartford Super HCMC 2082 offered 

the machining power we wanted,” he says. “It 

effectively stood alone as a machine that would 

provide an impressive torque rating of 670Nm 

from the 26kW spindle motor, which is much 

more than is available on machines of 

comparable size.” 

Of course, for certain sectors, only five-axis 

machining centre will suffice, predominantly 

due to high levels of component complexity. 

Complex curvature, blended radii and freeform 

surfaces are commonplace on many aerospace 

parts, which is why Preston-based tier two 

aerospace subcontractor TGM has just installed 

its seventh five-axis machining centre, allowing 

it to cope with increasing volumes of Airbus 

A350 work. 

The latest addition to the firm’s five-axis 

capacity is a Hurco VMX42SRTi, which has 

conversational programming capability built 

into its WinMax control system. TGM director 

Sarah Stephens says: “We purchased extra 

WinMax software to run on a laptop and use it 

to program around 90% of jobs run on our 

Hurco machines, including the new five-axis 

model, with data for the remaining work 

entered at the controls on the shop floor. 

Essentially, the Hurco software is an 

inexpensive way of preparing components for 

3+2-axis machining. It is like an extra CAM seat 

but costs vastly less.” 

The same component complexity issues face 

the motorsport sector, which is why 

Oxfordshire-based Renault Sport Formula One 

Team has taken delivery of a Mikron HPM 

800U five-axis machining centre from GF 

Machining Solutions. 

Since installation, the HPM 800U has been 

put to work machining a diverse range of parts, 

including a number of gearbox inserts made 

from titanium. Apart from some wire EDM 

profiling operations, which take up to 12 hours 

to complete, the inserts are five-axis machined 

entirely on the HPM 800U. Material removal 

rates are high (over 85% of the titanium is 

removed during roughing and finishing 

operations), and the inserts are machined to a 

high accuracy and require an excellent surface 

finish. 

“Despite such demands, our HPM 800U 

machines have not been found wanting and are 

among the most accurate, dynamic and reliable 

machining centres we have in our facility,” 

concludes machine shop manager Raphael 

Willie.

the Proline Centreless Grinder, that eliminates 

almost all of the mechanical procedures for set up 

and grinding, especially the adjustment of the 

workrest blade height. As a world’s first in 

centerless grinding, and covered by a patent, the 

regulating wheel on the new Tschudin machine is 

automatically adjusted in height by an 

independent CNC axis (Y-axis). The optimum 

height of the workpiece in order to achieve the 

best possible roundness is done simply by 

digitally adjusting the height position of the 

regulating wheel. During the production 

process, the Y-Axis will also compensate 

automatically for any change of grinding 

geometry due to wear of both the grinding 

and the regulating wheels. Therefore, the 

quality produced remains consistent.

eco 200 machine 

restores component 

for production 


The eco 200 grinding machine by Micromatic 

Grinding Technologies has been used to 

restore a roller used in Master Abrasives’ 

production facility in a belt splitting device. 

The blade marks have been ground out 

within tolerance and the component has been 

restored to its place in production. 

The component is a through-hardened 62 

Rockwell steel roller from a belt splitter in the 

manufacturing unit at Master Abrasives. The 

belt splitting device had become less effective 

in production due to wear on the roller part, 

which needed refurbishing. As the UK 

distributor for Micromatic Grinding 

Technologies, Master Abrasives has the eco 

200 cylindrical grinding machine set up for 

demonstration purposes in its grinding and 

finishing showroom and took the 

opportunity to use the machine.

Facilities Technician, explains: “The wear 

marks on the roller were from a blade used to 

splits rolls of coated material inside the 

manufacturing device. These marks had to 

be ground out to make the equipment 

effective in production once again. We 

usually get the roller sent out to be ground 

externally, which is more expensive and a 

longer lead time than it is for us to do the 

work in-house. This is why we were pleased 

with the excellent results from the 

Micromatic eco 200 machine used with our 

Master grinding wheels; it has saved us 

valuable time and resources.” 

The eco 200 is a basic but high-precision 

grinder which can be used for external, 

internal or face grinding applications. The 

machine is installed at the centre of Master 

Abrasives grinding and finishing showroom 

in Northamptonshire and is available for 

demonstration with many of the additional 

accessories offered by Micromatic, including 

the digital read-out. The machine’s small 

footprint and low cost combined with its 

ability to hold tight tolerances makes it a

GrindTec: Sharpening for mutual success 


At the GrindTec 2018 international trade fair in 

Augsburg, Vollmer, the specialist in grinding 

and eroding machines will demonstrate how it 

has successfully enhanced technologies and 

services for its sharpening and machine tools in 

close communication with customers and 

partners. 

VOLLMER will showcase its current 

innovations, including the new grinding 

machine CHX 840 for machining tooth faces and 

the top of circular saw blades in a single 

clamping process. The Swabian sharpening 

specialist also presents variants of the tool 

grinding machine VGrind 360 for manufacturing 

carbide tools as well as the VPulse 500 wire 

erosion machine and the QXD 250 eroding 

machine for the machining of diamond tools. 

At GrindTec, VOLLMER will also present 

the current sharpening machines as well as 

automation solutions for machining tools and 

circular saw blades at its 640 square metre stand.

VOLLMER debuts its new development for 

the machining of circular saws at GrindTec: The 

grinding machine CHX 840 sharpens carbidetipped 

circular saw blades with a diameter up to 

840mm. Thanks to a double grinding wheel, the 

machining of tooth face and top is effected in a 

single clamping process. This ensures a 

significant reduction in setup time. In addition, 

the machine is adapted to the individual needs of 

the customer by different automation levels, thus 

ensuring further time savings. One option is the 

automatic setup procedure, which consists of 

saw insertion, diameter detection and acoustic 

sensor for touching. Automatic loading can be 

added, whereby an autonomy time of up to 7 

hours is possible. 

Another technology highlight at the trade fair 

is the grinding machine VGrind 360, which 

VOLLMER designed for the development of 

carbide tools such as drills, milling cutters or 

reamers. The machine is available in two 

versions: One with two vertical spindles for 

grinding wheel packages, and the other with one 

grinding wheel spindle and one high-frequency 

spindle (HF spindle) plus an automatic tool 

changer. The high-frequency spindle allows the 

grinding of special pocket seats for PCD plates). 

One of VOLLMER's latest solutions, the HC 4, is 

a compact machine that comprises a chain 

magazine with 39 spaces for standardised HSK 

63-A (hollow shank tapers) or it can also 

optionally hold up to 158 shank workpieces. 

For the first time VOLLMER shows an 

optional roughing unit for the VGrind 360 in 

Augsburg. It enables the automatic opening of 

the abrasive coating, i.e. the removal of grinding 

residues on the diamond-tipped grinding wheel. 

This process helps maintain the sharpness of the 

grinding wheel for longer. It is now also possible 

to automatically change the grinding wheel sets 

and their coolant nozzles on the VGrind 360. 

Thanks to this option for both spindles, tool 

manufacturers can reduce the setup times and 

use the VGrind 360 even more efficiently for 

production.

Vero to demonstrate three of the best on Stand 430, Hall 18 

Vero Software will be demonstrating the 2018 

R1 releases of Edgecam, Radan and VISI, at the 

forthcoming MACH Exhibition. 

Edgecam includes updates to roughing 

cycles for milling, turning and MTM. And the 

prevention of unnecessary CAM regeneration is

common bore size. Manually sorting blades 

is not necessary, as the K850-M uses its

angles can be adjusted quickly and easily

precision Piranha-Clamp range of centering vices to its portfolio.

The automatic bandsaw is suited to 

cutting solid material, tubes and profiles, 

particularly in steel production and 

stockholding, machine manufacturing and 

the automotive industry. Compared with 

standard KASTOwin machines, the bandsaw 

can increase production efficiency by 

between 50 and 100 percent, more in some 

instances, depending on the type of blade 

and the material being cut. 

Having an installed weight of 4.3 tonnes 

and a rigid welded structure with vibrationoptimised 

ribbing, the KASTOwin pro AC 

5.6 ensures quiet, low-vibration operation, 

short processing times and accurate cutting. 

The saw band is driven by an 11 kW,

MACH to provide a major opportunity for Citizen Machinery 

to expand its applications of LFV Tehnology 

Stand H20-570 

MACH 2018 will be the first opportunity for a 

full exposure to visiting engineers of Citizen 

Machinery UK’s low frequency vibration (LFV) 

cutting technology on both its Cincom sliding 

head and the latest Miyano sliding headstock 

turn-mill centres which takes the LFV capability 

up to 42 mm diameter bar size. On stand H20- 

570 will see the official launch of Miyano’s BNA- 

42GTYLFV, and the Citizen Cincom D25-VIII 

plus the first UK exhibition showing of the 

smaller capacity, high speed Cincom L12-VII 

with LFV.

next generation control 

Such has been the take up of LFV technology 

that 500 installations were made worldwide 

during 2017 with massive predictions for future 

sales by Citizen as it progressively feeds the 

advanced technology feature across its product 

range. 

LFV is controlled via programming special G- 

codes at the control to impart the ideal size of chip 

required to offset problems such as swarf ‘birdnesting’. 

It is also able to improve tool life, often 

enables an increase in depth-of-cut and improved 

surface finish, for instance. This is 

achieved by introducing oscillation of 

the cutting tool to introduce air-cutting’ 

through the machine’s servo axis drives 

in the direction of feed while being 

synchronised to the rotation of the 

spindle. 

The hybrid 42 mm capacity 10-axis 

Miyano BNA-42-GTYLFV combines 

Citizen’s well-proven and advanced 

Cincom operating system with a 

Mitsubishi-based control platform. It 

has a 3-axis, 42 mm main spindle with 

hydraulic clamping, a 2-axis subspindle, 

a single 3-axis 8-station turret 

with half indexing and a gang tool slide. Tool 

capacity is 45 positions. 

The 10-axis Cincom D25-VIII has the next 

generation control to main and sub-spindle and 

has two 3-axis vertical gang toolposts, a B-axis, a 

back toolpost and opposite toolpost. Tool 

capacity is 59 positions. 

The compact Cincom L12-VLFV has a high 

speed 15,000 revs/min spindle and 10,000 

revs/min sub-spindle with a 27 tool capacity. 

It has a 3-axis vertical gang toolpost 

incorporating a 30 deg B-axis. There are six 

turning tool positions, up to nine driven tools, 

eight gang drilling tools and a 16 mm spindle 

higher capacity option.

Geoff Bryant retires from Citizen Machinery after creating 

business platform for record sales 

A gathering at Citizen Machinery UK celebrated 

Geoff Bryant’s 43 years of service, of which 25 

were given to the company as managing 

director. 

Significant in the last 12 months in his 

departure planning role, which involved the 

hand-over to the new management team of 

Edward James as MD, Darren Wilkins Deputy 

MD and Jon Hart as Finance Director, was a 

record breaking year of trading for the Bushey 

based business supporting the ranges of Citizen 

Cincom CNC sliding head and Miyano fixed 

head turn-mill centres. 

Said Mr James: “I must compliment Geoff 

who has set such a high standard and raised the 

profile of the business over so many years. He 

has created an enviable platform that enables us 

to further develop the company and its people, 

in particular involving keen younger employees. 

This will enable us to provide customers with the 

level of support that such a high technology 

based product deserves.” 

He followed on to describe how with 

Citizen’s recent announcement of a £2 million 

investment in a regional facility in the West 

Midlands, is destined to become a European 

conference facility and has been billed by the 

Japanese as its European Centre of Excellence. 

He said: “In particular, the interest and rapid 

take-up by customers following the launch of the 

Citizen patented and market leading Low 

Frequency Vibration (LFV) machining 

technology on the latest Citizen and forth 

coming Miyano machines, means that sales 

forecasts through 2018 show an even greater 

level of growth.” 

Mr Bryant has committed further time to 

serve the machine tool industry and in particular 

the members of the MTA in his role as its 

President. He accepted this position following 

dedicated support of the MACH exhibition 

through his involvement on the MTA’s 

Exhibition Committee from 2001 rising to 

become its chairman from 2005 until late in 2016 

when he took over the presidency. 

He will continue to be available to provide 

support to the new management team with the 

knowledge and experience gained from his 

initiation to production engineering direct from 

university in 1974 with NC Engineering under 

MD Ken Jeffreys and the new to the UK, Citizen 

NC controlled product range. Mr Bryant took 

over as MD in 1991 and was later heavily 

involved with the negotiations with the Japanese 

when the company became its wholly-owned 

subsidiary Citizen Machinery UK in 2006. 

Adding to the farewell retirement event, Mr 

James applauded Godfrey Mills, who has 

Edward James Managing Director and Geoff Bryant 

worked with the sales team since 1999. Also 

congratulated by the MD for long term 

commitment was Customer Manager Trevor 

Haase. He is responsible for post-sales support 

and was celebrating 30 years of man and boy 

service to the company.

XYZ unveils several MACH debutants 


XYZ Machine Tools will have several MACH 

firsts on its stand (H18-640) including two 

major developments in the company’s 

product range, which will be announced 

closer to the exhibition dates. The key 

machine tool debuts at MACH are the 

recently announced LR and HD ranges of 

vertical machining centres, along with XYZ’s 

ground-breaking UMC-5X five axis 

machining centre. 

With the arrival of the UMC-5X a gantrystyle 

simultaneous five-axis machining 

centre, XYZ Machine Tools moved the 

goalposts when it came to price/performance 

ratios on this type of machine. The 

specification and capability of the UMC-5X 

sets it apart from similar priced machines, 

and puts it ahead of many costing 

significantly more. Available with either the 

Siemens 840DSL Shopmill or Heidenhain 

iTNC 640 HSCI control systems, with their 

market leading machine control software 

such as Traori and Kinematic functions 

during five-axis simultaneous machining for 

improved accuracy. The UMC-5X also sets 

itself apart with its machining capacity, with 

a table configuration and machine design that 

allows a full 500 mm of Y-axis travel forward 

of the table when it is rotated 90 degrees 

towards the rear (component facing forward), 

allowing larger workpieces to be machined in 

comparison to many competitor machines, 

including those that quote the same, or 

bigger, axis travels than the UMC-5X. 

In 2017 XYZ Machine Tools launched its 

LR and HD ranges of vertical machining 

centres, both ranges will be represented at 

MACH. The LR series of machines feature, for 

the first time for XYZ, linear rail slideway 

technology, which now meet XYZ’s stringent 

performance criteria, while allowing a 

relative low-cost entry into VMC ownership. 

While the LR series is competitively priced, 

machine specification and performance is still 

high across the range which consists of the 

XYZ 500 LR, XYZ 750 LR and XYZ 1000 LR, 

with the designation relating to X-axis travel. 

The addition of Linear Rail technology 

complements the box slideway machines 

offered by XYZ Machine Tools, which are 

now designated the HD series. This sevenmachine 

range extends from the compact 

XYZ 660HD machines, with axis travels of 660

Making its UK exhibition premiere at MACH 

2018 will be the new line of Finepart micro 

abrasive waterjet machine tools that are now 

available from Rainford Precision. 

The micro machining specialists will be 

marking a tectonic shift in waterjet 

technology with the new Finepart WMC500 II

A milling cutter for perfect surface finishes in stainless steels 


The latest line of CrazyMill Cool products from 

the Swiss tool manufacturer Mikron Tool, will be 

making their MACH exhibition debut. Now 

available from Floyd Automatic Tooling, the new 

CrazyMill Cool have been developed for milling 

small dimensions with the highest performance 

and quality. At the EMO 2017 show, a new 

‘family member’ was added and this will receive 

a UK exhibition premiere at MACH. 

The new four tooth finish milling cutter with 

shank integrated cooling is available in the 

diameter range of 1 to 8mm for milling depths of 

up to 5XD. This milling cutter is suitable for 

machining all materials up to a hardness of 54 

HRC and its development has been focused upon 

stainless steels, titanium, heat resistant alloys and 

nickel and chrome-cobalt-alloys. Hence it is not 

surprising that these tools are especially 

convincing with extremely high performances 

levels when working with these materials. 

The characteristics of the new milling tool are 

designed to reach the highest milling 

performance as well as best surface quality. As it 

is well known, the conductivity of stainless and 

heat resistant materials is poor, resulting in 

overheating of the tool cutting edges. Mikron has 

developed a number of features to overcome this. 

To control heat and ensure it is not absorbed 

by the workpiece or swarf, the latest Mikron Tool 

is offered with 3, 4 or 5 coolant ducts through the 

tool shank. This constantly delivers a massive 

coolant jet directly to the milling area, 

independent of the work position and possible 

The combined CERATIZIT WNT stand at 

MACH 2018 (stand H19-500) is the largest in the 

group’s history at over 350 m2 and this space 

will be used to its maximum to demonstrate 

products from both brands and the application 

areas that they serve. 

On display will be an example of every new 

product introduced to its range since the launch 

of the last catalogue with a specific focus on key 

product launches and application areas. 

Included in this will be the specific Sliding 

Head Tooling range which was revealed 

towards the end of 2017. This range consists of 

over 11,000 items dedicated to users of sliding 

head lathe technology, with 5000 of these being 

brand new to the range and designed to offer 

significant advantages to those using sliding 

head machine technology. A selection of these 

interfering edges. The tool receives continuous 

coolant and does not risk any overheating. This 

makes it feasible to simultaneously work at high 

speeds, feeds and working depths. This results in 

a high chip volume and excellent tool life. 

Another advantage is the continuous flushing of 

chips from the milling area. This avoids a 

repetitive cutting of chips and the subsequent 

damage to the milled surface. 

The geometry is entirely focused on reaching 

a high milling performance and surface quality. 

This is achieved with a flute-angle of 30º on the 

shorter tools with cutting length 2XD, whereas 

the longer versions with cutting lengths 3.5 to 

4.5XD have a progressive flute-angle increase 

from 30º to 40º. For both versions, the transition of 

30º from the radius to the cylindrical section 

creates an optimal cutting-edge corner stability 

and smooth milling without vibrations. 

Some manufacturers recommend to mill with 

fast feed and speed but with smaller milling path 

(ap), others try increased milling depths but

tools can be seen in action on the Star GB stand 

at the show. 

Another new arrival to the range is its series 

of 3D Finish circular segment solid carbide 

milling cutters. Since their launch in September 

2017 they have generated significant interest 

among users of five-axis machining centers, 

where cycle time savings can be as great as 90 

per cent without the workpiece, tool and 

machine being subjected to a higher load. These 

gains are attributable to the large effective 

radius on the cutters, as large as 1500 mm, 

meaning much greater widths of cut (ap) are 

possible. A secondary benefit of these large 

widths of cut is that surface finish can also be 

improved along with cycle time reduction. For 

example, a typical Ø 20 mm ball nosed cutter 

would achieve a surface quality of Ra1.6 µ with 

a stepover of 0.5 mm, but with the 3D Finish 

and a radius of 1500 mm, the stepover could be 

increased to 6.93 mm with the same surface

showcase a wide range of cost-effective, 

lightweight and maintenance-free bearings and 

cable management systems for a variety of 

engineering applications. 

Developed to combine the advantages of the 

E2/000 and E4.1 energy chains in one product 

range, the E4.1L ‘lean’ features interior clip in 

slotted separators that provide up to an 80 

percent assembly time saving. Visitors to the 

stand (H6‐314) will see that the innovative 

design of these lean separators enables layerby-layer 

insertion of shelves and cables, and the 

time savings are increased again by using the 

new lean honeycomb strain relief.

individual parts ordering and shipping costs. In 

addition, readychain systems undergo 

extensive quality control and functional tests 

and come with the igus chain and cable 

guarantee to agreed and defined parameters. 

For applications that require curved rails, 

such as machine tool guarding systems, the 

drylin W curved rails and self-aligning 

carriages offer the perfect solution. A pivoting 

spherical ball, made of the engineering polymer 

material iglidur J, is used to self-align the 

carriage for smooth, reliable movement along 

the curved rail. As with all drylin systems, they 

are self-lubricating and therefore run 

maintenance-free, and are unaffected by dirt or

Briquetting – the process by which waste is 

compressed into uninformed sized bricks. Many

Transforming waste into revenue

that BIG KAISER has applied for two patents 

for the new system. One is the RF antenna 

that radiates through the display and battery 

positioning and simplifies replacement. By

KAISER is ensuring that it stays at the 

forefront of Industry 4.0 developments. 

Alongside the next generation EWE 

digital boring system, BIG KAISER will be 

launching its new line of EWN fine boring 

heads. Capable of boring holes from 0.4 to 

152mm diameter, the EWN incorporates a 

large dial disc for parallax-free reading. This 

technology allows end users to execute 

precision diameter adjustments of just 

0.001mm. Available for DV, HSK, BT and Big 

Capto spindle configurations, the EWN is 

offered with a complete line of boring heads 

for the most precise boring solution that 

money can buy. 

Keeping its focus on precision and fast 

set-up times, ITC will also be introducing the 

BIG KAISER CTL-90, a new compact centring 

tool designed for small lathes and turning 

centres. 

The ITC stand at MACH 2018 will have a

will include the FullCut Mill, the most 

comprehensive precision boring and holemaking 

line as well as the ultra high feed C-

Robots as new 

team members 

Paradigm Electronics, a loud speaker and 

subwoofer manufacturer, has implemented 

robots to assist with product polishing. 

Humans collaborate with the robots but no 

longer perform the entire time consuming 

and laborious task themselves. In fact, most 

jobs have been altered in some way by the 

introduction of Industry 4.0. Here, Jonathan 

Wilkins, marketing director of obsolete 

industrial automation parts supplier, EU 

Automation, explains how job roles are 

changing with Industry 4.0. 

There have been a lot of concerns and 

misconceptions about robots stealing 

people’s jobs. The truth is, while some jobs 

are being replaced by automated equipment, 

new jobs are also arising as a result of 

Industry 4.0. Therefore, a more relevant 

concern is how Industry 4.0 will change the 

nature of people’s jobs. 

Many companies are using automated 

equipment to take over physical, strenuous 

tasks, improving the health and safety of 

their staff. For example, when the demand 

for a supplier of bulk bottles of windscreen 

washer fluid increased, the staff began to get 

tired and obtain injuries. The company 

introduced robots to manoeuvre the bottles, 

reducing excessive manual handling for staff. 

This can be of even greater benefit for 

older workers, especially with the increasing 

retirement age causing the average age of the 

workforce to rise. 

Recent advancements in sensor 

technology have enabled Industry 4.0 to 

thrive. Sensors can be attached to industrial 

plant equipment to detect anomalous 

activity. This means that problems with the 

equipment can be identified and resolved 

before they result in machine downtime. As a 

result, plant operators and managers are 

spared the stress and financial burden 

associated with outages.

Pressings subcontractor brings 

toolmaking in-house 

PAB Coventry (www.pabgroup.co.uk), 

which produces sheet metal components, 

pressings and fabrications in quantities from 

prototypes up to 10,000 per year, has since 

early 2016 invested £1.5 million in new 

machine tools. They include a Hurco vertical 

machining centre (www.hurco.co.uk), 

another hydraulic press, and a 4 kW flat-bed 

fibre laser cutting machine, a 4 kW 5-axis 

laser cutting machine and a 2-metre press 

brake, all from Prima Power. The company 

also bought a second and third industrial 

unit in Falkland Close, Canley, increasing 

floor area by two-thirds. 

Underpinning this expansion is strong 

growth in sales to the automotive sector, 

which accounts for 90 per cent of turnover. 

TS16949-accredited PAB specialises in 

fabricating sub-frame pressings, bracketry 

and grilles as well as assemblies such as 

windscreen surrounds for Aston Martin, 

Lotus and other top-end car manufacturers 

as well as Triumph Motorcycles. 

The company, which operates 24/7 with 

close to 100 employees, is moving strongly 

into the rail industry and has recently used 

its AS9100 quality accreditation, gained 

through earlier military work, to win 

contracts in the aerospace sector. 

In 2015 alone, PAB spent over £1 million 

buying in press tools to produce its vast 

range of components from aluminium, mild 

steel and stainless steel, mainly up to 3 mm 

thick. Around 700 line items are handled per 

month in typical batch sizes of 300 to 350. The 

expenditure on tooling was becoming so

Group. The acquisition strengthens AWL’s 

position in a thriving UK market through a

tonnes. It machines PAB’s press tools 

comfortably to accuracies within ± 0.015 mm. 

During 2016, it produced 20 per cent of the 

subcontractor’s tools, helping to manufacture 

more than one million components shipped 

that year. In the first half of 2017, the 

proportion of tools made in the Coventry 

facility rose to around 35 per cent and Mr 

Brazier predicts that it will eventually 

increase to more than half.
