Janelle Sack, her husband, their two children and her father-in-law own
a vast 220 acres in Weldona, Colorado. Their
home is a working farm, with chickens, goats,
cows, horses, and a donkey.
After learning of all of the benefits of goat’s milk, Janelle and her husband
felt that the milk had wonderful anti-aging properties and was a lifesaver
for dry and sensitive skin. So, they decided to invest in the raw materials
needed to make lotion, and their business, Hippie Goat Lotion, was born!
Janelle and her husband bought their first
goat in 2014 shortly after their daughter was
born. After Janelle’s milk production depleted,
they needed an alternative milk supply.
Their son had suffered from terrible diaper
rash from trying to digest formula, so their
pediatrician recommended they switch to
goat’s milk.
When their goat, Dot, weaned herself off her mother’s milk, Janelle and her
husband decided to research what other purposes Dot could serve on the
family farm. Their research astounded them -- goat’s milk had many health
benefits! It contained fatty acids, which are less irritating and more
easily absorbed into skin; triglycerides, which are super moisturizing; selenium,
which protects skin by neutralizing free radicals and other skin
damaging compounds before they lead to wrinkles; Vitamin A, which is a
critical vitamin for the skin;
and lactic acid, which helps to
gently slough off dead skin cells
and hydrate and brighten skin.
Goat’s milk also has unique
nourishing properties -- it is
the perfect ingredient to add to
anything that touches your skin,
from your shaving cream to
moisturizer.
The Sack family now owns three goats-- two milking goats and one
younger goat (Penelope - future Hippie Goat contributor). They enjoy
getting everyone in the family involved in the business, from feeding and
watering the goats, to milking, to making and bottling the lotions. It’s a
real family affair!
