CIVIL SOCIETY
Civil Society: Preparing the Next Generation of Diverse Leaders
Monday, April 27 | 2:00-3:30 pm | Will depart from the hotel at 10:45 a.m.
Description: Travel to the East Bay for an interactive session featuring youth and youth related
activities, funders, cross-culture perspectives, and varied approaches to advocating for social justice.
This session takes place in Oakland, a city with rich culture, tradition and a legacy of leadership on
issues related to gender and racial equality and inclusion. It offers an opportunity to witness how
local leaders are engaged with youth to improve opportunities to secure their future and prepare
them for leadership in the future growth of their region. You’ll explore how significant public/private/
philanthropic collaborations are resulting in measurable progress toward positive outcomes for youth,
with an emphasis on young men and women of color.
Participants will take public transportation to the East Bay Community Foundation for lunch and
conversation led by President and CEO James Head. You’ll hear about innovative partnerships between
the Oakland Unified School District, community based organizations, foundations, and corporations
on Restorative Justice, as well as how they are improving outcomes for boys and young men of
color through the African American Male Achievement Initiative and the Unity Council in their work
for Latino boys and young men. Following lunch, participants will visit the dynamic service space of
Girl’s Inc. of Alameda County, which provides more than 20 programs to 7,000 girls ages 5 – 18.
There we will focus on youth related activities for girls and young women, and hear perspectives on
community bridge building with representatives from Girl’s Inc., RYSE Youth Center, Youth Uprising
and the East Oakland Youth Development Center.
with the support of
