ECONOMY & FINANCE
Creating an Innovative, Vibrant and Inclusive Economic Landscape
Monday, April 27 | 11:00 am - 2:30 pm | Will depart from the hotel at 10:40 am
Description: Explore La Cocina, a groundbreaking business incubator that supports a growing roster
of sustainable small businesses made up of low-income women and immigrant food entrepreneurs.
La Cocina (pronounced la co-see-nah, meaning “The Kitchen” in Spanish) was inspired by its
current home, San Francisco’s Mission District. This ethnically diverse and economically vulnerable
neighborhood thrives in part due to the many small informal businesses that serve the community.
You’ll tour La Cocina’s commercial kitchen space and hear from their representatives, a philanthropic
supporter, The Women’s Foundation of California, and speak with entrepreneurs who are launching,
growing and formalizing successful food businesses. Next you’ll visit restaurant site, El Pípila, for an
authentic lunch from Guanajuato, the heart of Mexico, which reflects both entrepreneurial aspiration
and delicious cuisine.
NATURAL RESOURCES & ENERGY
Investing in Parks to Advance Community Resiliency
Monday, April 27 | 2:00pm - 3:30 pm | Will depart from the hotel at 1:45 pm
Description: See firsthand the power that philanthropic support has had in transforming a military
site covered in asphalt and debris into the “front porch” of America’s most visited national park,
Golden Gate National Recreation Area. You’ll hear from representatives of the Evelyn & Walter Haas,
Jr. Fund, Kaiser Permanente, Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, and the Golden Gate National
Recreation Area. The short walking tour will highlight the role of parks as solutions to challenges
facing San Francisco and cities across the country – including improving health, creating pathways to
leadership for youth, and increasing climate literacy. The outdoor walk is flat, wide, and easy so no
special footwear required. Dress for the weather – layers are recommended.
