The Santana ranch is one of the 5 biggest cattle farms of Colombia. Its located in the province of
Casanare in the heart of Los Llanos, a region with one of the biggest biodiversity’s in the world.
Alligators, anacondas, capybaras, all kind of birds and a lot more wildlife live on the grazing
grounds of the farm. Or in fact it’s the other way around; cowboys, horses and cattle live in the
nature reserve of El Hato Santana. This huge farm has NOT the intention to work in tourism, to
build chalets, tourist camps or to become a dude ranch. No, they don’t need it and they don’t want
it. But, I (Paul) know the owners and they allow me and my friends to meet their culture and their
daily life at a real authentic Colombian cattle ranch. You will be part of an unbelievable Colombian
Cowboy experience! But, I don’t want you to be afraid of all the tough stuff mentioned before. The
locals at the farm are very friendly and proud people and they will welcome you with open arms
and share with you all they have and all they know. The holiday is going to have rough activities, but
after every hard day of work you will be able to relax at the very beautiful hacienda. You will share
your comfortable room with other companions, good dinners and ice-cold beers will be served,
a refreshing swim in the swimming pool is possible, but the next day at 04:00 AM catllework or
round-up duty will call you. So I can honestly say that what the others do at other places or farms
is a pony ride compared to what you will do!
Each year in the month of May (wet season) and November (dry seaon) the “Trabajo de Llano” is an
event at the Santana ranch. It takes 40 days and 40 men to do the job. You, this time, will only stay 8
days, but I promise you that you will have 40 new experiences and 40 new friends! This is an adventure
of a lifetime. Ready for it?
