A COLLEAGUE here at Star
Media, Shane Victor, is off to
France this month (see pages
1, 4 & 5) to retrace the cycle
tracks of his grandfather Bill.
He, and husband and wife
Jillian and John McKie, are the
only three Christchurch people
on the 37-strong Kiwi tour
which will follow in the footsteps,
so to speak, of the New
Zealand Cycling Corps on the
Western Front during the latter
stages of World War 1.
Shane and the others will cycle
hundreds of kilometres on their
journey, a trip I am sure will be
very rewarding.
The corps was involved in
building tracks close to battlefields
to allow the following
main body of troops, artillery
and horses access to positions
close to the German lines at such
strongholds like Messines.
They were exposed to constant
enemy fire, and shelling.
When they signed up for war
many young men saw it as the
adventure of as lifetime.
How wrong they were.
FUN IDEA FOR EMPTY SHOPS
THe hunt is on to find creative
ways to fill the city centre’s shop
windows. The city council is
launching an initiative, ShoPOP,
aimed at turning unused shop
windows into temporary fun
attractions. People can put their
suggestions forward on the city
council’s Facebook page. Designs
would be then be sought based
on the ideas. All proposals will be
reviewed by a panel, and a shortlist
made. The public will then get to
vote, with three ideas chosen.
