Children’s surgeon highlights concerns over
‘body piercing’ magnet craze
A leading children’s surgeon is raising awareness
of the dangers of magnets after saving the lives
of children falling victim to a new ‘body piercing’
craze.
Hull Royal Infirmary’s paediatric surgery
department has treated three children who have
swallowed high powered ball-bearing magnets in
the past three months.
Sanja Besarovic, a consultant paediatric surgeon
at Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, has
written to the Royal Society for the Prevention of
Accidents as the latest craze where young people
attempt to mimic body piercings sweeps schools.
It is believed youngsters are attempting to mimic
body piercings, unaware that the magnets stick to
each other through loops of gastrointestinal tract
and could cause bowel perforation or intestinal
blockage if they are swallowed.
Wear A Hat Day 2018
Please get involved in Wear A Hat Day on
Thursday 29th March 2018 (or any day in March)
to help raise funds for research into brain
tumours.
This devastating disease kills more children
and adults under the age of 40 than any other
cancer. Just 1% of the national spend on cancer
research has been allocated to brain tumours.
During Wear A Hat Day 2017, individuals,
families, schools and other organisations all
came together and raised over £300,000 to fund
our research.
Together we can reach our target of £600,000 –
enough to fund a team of researchers for a year.
Register online today: www.wearahatday.org.
Thank you for helping to fund the fight.
