Children’s surgeon highlights concerns over
‘body piercing’ magnet craze
A leading children’s surgeon is raising awareness
of the dangers of magnets after saving the lives
of children falling victim to a new ‘body piercing’
craze.
Hull Royal Infirmary’s paediatric surgery
department has treated three children who have
swallowed high powered ball-bearing magnets in
the past three months.
Sanja Besarovic, a consultant paediatric surgeon
at Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, has
written to the Royal Society for the Prevention of
Accidents as the latest craze where young people
attempt to mimic body piercings sweeps schools.
It is believed youngsters are attempting to mimic
body piercings, unaware that the magnets stick to
each other through loops of gastrointestinal tract
and could cause bowel perforation or intestinal
blockage if they are swallowed.

Comedian and Children’s Author
David Walliams named Judge of
the 10th National Young Writers’
Awards!
The National Young Writers’ Awards returns with a bang as children’s
author David Walliams has been named judge for 2018! The competition,
organised by tuition provider, Explore Learning, has inspired hundreds
of thousands of children across the UK to put pen to paper and give
writing a try.
The theme for this year is ‘Heroes’ where children are tasked with writing a
500-word story about their hero.
The winner will be surprised at a
school assembly by David who will
announce the National Young Writer
of the Year and present them with a
trophy, a trip to Disneyland Paris for
their family and £500 of books for
their school!
David says: “It is a real privilege to be
named judge for this year’s National
Young Writers’ Awards and I am so
looking forward to reading what
the brilliant brains of our country’s
children come up with.”
The competition will run from 5th
March to 29th April and is easy to

Nessasaurus
