Speziell für die Gründungsversammlung war
„Mr. BACnet“ Mike Newman aus den USA eingeflogen
und berichtete über die Übertragung von BACnet-
Protokollen via Internet.
“Mr. BACnet”, also known as Mike Newman, travelled
from the USA to report on the transmission of BACnet
protocols via the Internet at the inauguration meeting.

Zwei sehr konkrete Aufgaben stehen auf der „to
do“- Liste: Erstens die Akquisition von Mitgliedern
besonders auch aus Nutzerkreisen. Und
zweitens die noch stärkere Internationalisierung
der BIG. Für die Übernahme der BIG-Geschäftsstelle
dürfte das Präsidium in den nächsten
Tagen Prof. Schiffers berufen.
More than 40 representatives of technical
building suppliers, universities
and industry organizations as well as
users, planners and system integrators
came from both the USA and
European countries to take part in
a “historical hour of building automation”
in Frankfurt on May 14 th ,
1998. There seventeen of those
companies founded the first
BACnet Interest Group e. V., in
the beginning known as “BIG”.
Under the direction of its first
president, Nils Meinert, the
group set the objective to
become a pan-European,
interdisciplinary BACnet
information and explanation
platform, promoting
and disseminating
the manufacturer-neutral
communication
protocol for building
automation through
marketing measures
and laying the foundations for training
programs, certifications, etc. As the only journalist,
the editor of the cci newspaper was invited to
attend this inaugural meeting.
It was not just the air conditioning in the seminar
room that was working smoothly on May
14th: Heinz Theo Sandkaulen, who was responsible
for the building automation of the medical
facilities of the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf,
kicked-off the gathering with an explanation
of tasks and problems faced by building
management.
Afterwards, “Mr. BACnet” (also known as Mike
Newman), who flew in from the USA to Frankfurt
specifically for this inauguration ceremony,
approached the podium and delivered an outstanding
presentation entitled “BACnet – Technology
for Today & Tomorrow,” which outlined
the history, advantages and structures of
BACnet as an open, manufacturer-neutral communication
protocol in building automation. His
statements regarding current developments and
the potential for transferring BACnet protocols
via the Internet – which is increasingly applicable
to the central monitoring and automation of
distributed properties – were met with particular
interest.
Mike Newman’s presentation was followed by
lectures delivered by Peter Fischer from the University
of Applied Sciences Dortmund, as well as
a few short presentations from Franz Fritz (Johnson
Controls), Karl-Heinz Belser (Honeywell),
René Quirighetti (Landis & Staefa), and Volker
Stamer (Trane). These covered topics such
as the Europe-wide exchange of information
and experience on BACnet between all parties
involved, from industry to planners, system integrators
and users of all kinds. Issues pertaining
to joint marketing and guidelines for the certification
of BACnet products, as well as the establishment
of training programs and information
events were also addressed. The promotion of
BACnet was clearly the center of attention.
Under the direction of Prof. Klaus W. Schiffers
(University of Applied Sciences Aachen), the
actual founding of the BIG and the elections
of the first board took place. The elections
resulted in the following composition of the first
BIG Presidium: President: Nils Meinert (Landis
& Staefa); Vice President: Karl-Heinz Belser
(Honeywell); Treasurer: Volker Röhl (JCI). The following
individuals were also elected to the advisory
board: Hans Symanczik (Kieback&Peter);
Prof. Peter Fischer (University of Applied
Sciences Dortmund); Volker Stamer (Trane);
Richard Straub (BUS-House Zurich); and
Siegfried Weikmann (M + M).
Two very specific tasks were taken care of on
the initial “to do” list. First, the acquisition of
members, especially from stakeholder circles.
The next objective was to further internationalize
the BIG. For the takeover of the BIG office, the
Presidium is likely to appoint Prof. Schiffers over
the next few days.
