KINGSTON FRONTENACS GAMEDAY REPORT
FINAL DIVISION MATCH-UP OF THE REGULAR SEASON
FRONTENACS AND GENERALS BATTLE FOR POINTS TOWARDS PLAYOFF SEEDINGS
the tie breaker over the IceDogs and can clinch
the third seed with a single point.
The Kingston Frontenacs have locked up home
ice advantage in the opening round of the
playoffs but can clinch the third seed with a
point against the Generals. Oshawa is currently 3
points behind Niagara in a battle for fourth in the
conference. With only three games remaining,
they need every point available to them if they
hope to host games 1 and 2 of their first-round
series.
Kingston has had a lot of success against the
Generals this season winning 5 of the 7 games
played. The Frontenacs have outscored the
Generals 27-15 in those 7 games. Despite
having the advantage for the majority of the
season, Kingston dropped a 5-3 decision to
Oshawa one week ago.
After going through a bit of a rough stretch earlier
this month, the Frontenacs found their game
last weekend winning back to back games over
the Ottawa 67’s. Jason Robertson scored the
overtime winner on Saturday in Ottawa, and after
previously going four games without a point, he
has now recorded 3 goals and 5 assists during
a four-game point streak. The 4-points Kingston
earned from those games, coupled with an
Oshawa loss to Hamilton on Sunday night,
clinched a top four finish for Kingston assuring
them of home ice advantage in the opening
round. Kingston sits 5 points ahead of Niagara
for third in the conference. The Frontenacs hold
Oshawa has been climbing the standings in
recent weeks. They come into tonight’s game
having won 8 of their past 10 games, including
impressive wins over Kingston and Kitchener.
Home ice advantage would be a major advantage
for Oshawa if they can earn it. They are 8 games
over .500 on home ice, while 2 games under
.500 on the road. The Generals have yet to win
a game in Kingston this season and have only
managed 5 wins at the Rogers K-Rock Centre in
the last 5 seasons.
Of course, there is the possibility that Kingston
and Oshawa could end up being first round
opponents. The Generals will play either Niagara
or Kingston in the first round. They would likely
have to drop to the sixth seed to have a first
round date with Kingston.
HELVIG SETS CAREER HIGH IN WINS:
On Saturday in Kingston’s 5-4 overtime win in
Ottawa, Jeremy Helvig set a new career high
in victories with 30. Only 5 other Frontenacs
goaltenders have hit the 30-win mark, the most
recent being Lucas Peressini during Helvig’s
rookie season of 2014-15. The 30-win season
has helped Helvig set a new franchise record
for career wins. He currently has 80 career
victories. - KF
FIND MOTIVATION IN PLAYING SPOILER
It’s not often that you would call a top three team a spoiler, but in this case, Kingston can be just
that. The Oshawa Generals are desperately trying to catch the Niagara IceDogs to claim home
ice advantage in the opening round of the playoffs. Sitting three points back with three games
remaining, Oshawa needs these points to keep home ice advantage a realistic possibility. As a
long time division rival, the Frontenacs would enjoy nothing more than being part of the reason
Oshawa doesn’t accomplish their goal. If they can earn two points in the process, it is a win-win
for the black and gold.
FIRST PERIOD SUCCESS
Kingston has a strong 5-2 record against the Generals this season. In all five wins, the Frontenacs
have led the game after the first period. In both losses they have been tied after a period. The
early lead allows Kingston to control the game. Oshawa has to chase the game to try and make
up a deficit and that plays into Kingston’s favour. Putting Oshawa behind early also plays a role in
their confidence. They haven’t been able to come from behind against Kingston yet this season,
so an early deficit may sink their spirits. Getting ahead early is essential because winning the first
period goes a long way towards winning the game.
FINISH THE JOB
The Frontenacs have just one thing left to play for in the regular season and that is to lock up the
third seed in the Eastern Conference. That goal can be accomplished with a single point, but no
team wants to achieve a goal with an overtime loss. A win over a division rival to lock up the third
seed tonight would feel very rewarding. The faster Kingston can finish this job, the faster they can
focus solely on the first round of the OHL playoffs. - KF
by Jordan Jackson, Kingston Frontenacs
Just 17 hours after leaving the ice at
the Rogers K-Rock Centre, the Kingston
Frontenacs and Ottawa 67’s took to
the ice at TD Place in Ottawa for a
rematch on Saturday, March 10. The
Frontenacs dominated the Friday night
matchup beating Ottawa 7-2. Cliff Pu,
Linus Nyman, and Jason Robertson all
recorded 3 points in that game to lead
the Frontenacs.
Cedrick Andree struggled in goal for
Ottawa on Friday, so the 67’s turned to
Olivier Tremblay on Saturday afternoon.
After earning 3rd-star honours on Friday
night, Kingston went back to Jeremy
Helvig, who was looking for a career-high
30th victory.
Saturday afternoon’s first period showed
us how much of a difference a single day
can make. Kingston had dominated the
opening period on Friday but on Saturday
it was Ottawa controlling play in the
opening frame.
Despite Kingston having the only power
play time in the period, Ottawa outshot
14 KINGSTON FRONTENACS GAMEDAY MAGAZINE

Kingston 9-5. They also were the only
team to get on the scoreboard. 67’s
leading scorer, Sasha Chmelevski, found
a wide open Tye Felhaber in front of the
Kingston goal. Felhaber made no mistake
beating Jeremy Helvig to score the only
goal of the opening period.
At the end of the period, Noel Hoefenmeyer
took an interference penalty that put
Kingston on the power play with just 0:19
remaining. The Frontenacs trailed 1-0
after the first but had nearly a full power
play to start the second period.
The Frontenacs weren’t able to capitalize
on the power play to open the period
but they did play a better period overall.
Kingston found themselves spending
more time in the offensive zone and
making Olivier Tremblay work a little
harder in net.
Near the midway point of the period,
Kingston was able to tie the game. Jakob
Brahaney’s initial point shot was stopped
by Tremblay, but Gabe Vilardi swatted at
the rebound and knocked it in to even the
score at 1-1. Kingston had a great chance
to jump ahead on the power play late in
the period but it was Ottawa that broke
out on a two on one odd man rush. Quinn
Yule kept the puck and slid it between the
legs of Helvig to put Ottawa back in front.
It was an evenly played period and the
score reflected that. Both teams scored
once in the period and Ottawa took a 2-1
lead into the final frame.
It was a disastrous start to the period for
Kingston when Travis Barron scored just
0:15 in to put Ottawa up 3-1. Kingston kept
coming however and Gabe Vilardi notched
OFFICIAL GAMEDAY PROGRAM, VOLUME 45, 2018
his second of the game on the power play
to bring Kingston back within a goal.
Ottawa looked to put the Frontenacs away
when Quinn Yule scored his second of the
game at 9:14 to extend the 67’s lead to
4-2, but a two-goal lead is never enough
against a team with as much firepower as
Kingston. With under five minutes left, the
offence exploded. Ryan Cranford scored
a third-period goal for the second night
in a row that cut the lead in half. Just
0:17 later Linus Nyman tied the game
on a rebound opportunity after Tremblay
had made a great save on the initial shot.
Kingston had scored three third period
goals to get themselves into overtime.
Ottawa shot themselves in the foot early in
overtime when they took a penalty in the
first minute and put the best power play in
the OHL on the ice. That power play took
full advantage. After nearly a full minute
in the offensive zone, Cliff Pu found Jason
Robertson with a cross-crease pass and
Roberston tapped it in for his 41st of the
season, and more importantly, the gamewinning
goal.
For the second night in a row, Kingston
scored a pair of power play goals to help
defeat the Ottawa 67’s. Their power play
went 4 for 7 in the home-and-home
series. Jeremy Helvig earned his 30th win
of the season setting a new career high.
The franchise record is 33 held by Mike
Moffat in the 1980-81 season.
The Frontenacs can lock themselves into
the 3rd seed in the Eastern Conference
with a single point with three games
remaining. - KF
