Children three years old through 5th grade are welcome, accompanied by a parent or caregiver. This event is planned together by the Wilmette churches who also plan VBS in June. Service of Tenebrae Join the church at 7 p.m. on March 30 for this Tenebrae Service, which is a service of diminishing lights. Cain Cain was married to Suzanne Bruns Cain in 1957 at Saints Faith Hope and Charity and was the father of three children: James Byron Cain of Traverse City, Michigan, Cyndy Cain Salgado of Chicago, and Kevin Patrick Cain (deceased). Cain was brother to John (Jack) H Cain, Patricia (Patti) Cain Penn, and Mary Cain Gurry (deceased). Cain was an uncle to many nieces and nephews. He attended Loras College and proudly served in the U.S. Marines. He was president of Uptown Federal Savings and Loan for many years and later moved to Florida where he and his wife Susie developed Indian Trails, Vero Beach. Cain was a talented pianist who loved to travel and spend time with family and friends. Those who knew him well will remember his unique and contagious laugh, his fun sense of humor and adventure, and his “glass is half-full” resilient spirit. A celebration of Cain’s life will be held from 1-4 p.m. April 8 with a special prayer service and remembrances beginning at 1 p.m. at Sunset Ridge Country Club, 2100 Sunset Ridge Road, Northfield. Jean Paquin Jean Paquin, a former Wilmette resident, died March 11. Paquin Paquin was born on April 10, 1947 and a resident of Yarmouth Port, Mass. at the time of passing. She grew up in New Jersey, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Wilmette and graduated from Trinity College in Washington, D.C. in 1969. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 23 at Saint Pius X Church, Station Ave., South Yarmouth. Burial will follow at Woodside Cemetery, Yarmouth Port. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to a trust for her grandson, Aiden Langhorne, PO Box 38, Yarmouth Port, MA 02675. Joyce Roehl, SLW Joyce Roehl, SLW died March 9 in Arlington Heights at the age of 80. Born in Hamtramck, Mich., Roehl Roehl was the only child of Henry and Mary (Krall) Roehl and attended elementary and secondary schools in Detroit. She entered the Sisters of Christian Charity in Wilmette in 1962 and was one of the founding members of the Sisters of the Living Word in 1975. She ministered as teacher or principal at St. Isaac Jogues in Niles and St. Jerome, Rogers Park, St. Priscilla, and St. Cornelius Schools in Chicago. Once retiring from teaching and administration, she volunteered as receptionist at the Living Word Center in Arlington Heights. She said that when she celebrated her 50th anniversary as a religious woman in 2013, she summed it up this way: “50 terrific years of serving the people of God in many ways. A GREAT LIFE!“ Visitation and funeral were March 17 at St. Isaac Jogues Church, 8149 W. Golf Road, Niles, IL. A reception was held immediately after mass in the parish hall. Funeral info 847-253-5423 or lauterburgoehler.com Janice Louise Smith Janice Louise Smith, a former Wilmette school teacher, died from complications of Alzheimer’s. Born in Fort Wayne, Indiana and raised in Traverse City, Michigan, she lived her adult life in Chicago. A graduate of Michigan State University and National Louis University; she became an elementary school and fine arts teacher spending most of her career in the Wilmette public schools. Whether on the sunset or sunrise side, she was rarely far from her beloved Lake Michigan. A student and admirer of fine art, Smith never missed a chance to visit a museum or attend a concert. She also enjoyed camping, tennis, downhill skiing, and was a fan of Chicago sports teams. Her travels took her across the entire continent, as well as Europe, Africa, and China. Smith, a cancer survivor, was preceded in death by her parents Alfred and Isabell Smith, her sisters Joan Gospodareck, Judy Schaner, and Nancy Flaherty, and nephews Thomas Gospodareck and Scott Foster. She is survived by her sister Marjorie Foster, brothers-in-law Walter Gospodareck, Robert Schaner, and William Flaherty, nieces Judy (Stan) Jay and Amy (Ian) Foster, nephews David (Paula) Gospodareck, Michael (Doreena) Gospodareck, Michael Schaner, Patrick (Toni) Schaner, Sean (Justine) Flaherty, Brian (Kristi) Flaherty, and Brendan Flaherty, many great-nieces and nephews, and a special group of loyal and caring friends. Friends and family met for a mass of Christian Burial March 16 at Visitation Catholic Church in Elmhurst. Interment Private.
