THREE ATHLETES OF
THE WEEK
1. Hugh Brady
(above). The Loyola
Gold goalie allowed
only one goal in
the Ramblers’ AHAI
Blackhawk Cup
semifinal 2-1 win
over Glenbrook
North.
2. Lauren Voss. The
Loyola girls water
polo player scored
22 goals in six
games, leading
the Ramblers to
an undefeated 6-0
record, including
4-0 in the Windy
City Water Polo
Classic. Sixteen
of the goals
came during that
tournament and
two of the six wins
were against rivals
New Trier and St.
Ignatius.
3. Lilly Frentzel. The
New Trier soccer
player scored her
first career goal
against Highland
Park Saturday,
March 17.
The beginning of a season
can always be a tricky
one. Teams try out new
formations, new lineups,
a little bit of everything, to
see what can make them a
better team and be able to
put points, or in soccer’s
case, goals, on the scoreboard.
Both New Trier and
Highland Park were playing
only their second game
of the young season on
Saturday, March 17, in
Northfield and fittingly,
on St. Patrick’s Day, the
team wearing green, New
Trier, would come out on
top 2-0.
The Trevians (2-0) managed
to do it with a little
bit of everything, solid
defense, executing the offense
to where it would
give them a chance to
score goals, and keeping
their opponent at bay.
They did so much so, that
the Giants (0-2) weren’t
able to pick up a shot on
goal the entire game.
“I think we got a little bit
better from our first game,
in terms of trying to organize
and help each other
out,” New Trier coach Jim
Burnside said. “We always
talk to our kids about doing
their job and also doing
33 percent of somebody
else’s job.
“So anybody that is
marking somebody knows
they have that extra piece
behind them. Our experience
in the back with
Sydney (Parker), Meredith
(Nassar) and Caroline (Iserloth)
helped a ton.”
While it was New Trier
that came out on top,
Highland Park and its
coach Kate Straka were
happy with how the team
played, especially defensively
for the majority of
the first half.
“Defensively, I think Jamie
Stern, who we pulled
back to play left back from
her previous defensive
center mid position, she
was all over the place,”
Straka said. “She played
middle, she played right,
she was all over the place
and was strong in the back
for us. Her teammates fed
off of that.”
After not getting much
going offensively early in
the first half, sophomore
Emma Weaver took a ball
down the right side of the
field and hit a rocket that
went in the far bottom corner,
giving the hosts a 1-0
lead with 11 minutes, 39
seconds left in the opening
half.
The goal breathed some
life into the Trevians, but
they weren’t able to put
another one into the back
of the net before the half
ended.
While the Giants’ defense
was doing a good
job putting the clamps on
the Trevians, their offense
was sputtering.
“They’re so strong in the
back,” Straka said about the
Trevians defense. “They’re
big, strong, composed and
faster than us. We tried to
outplay them with heart
and grit but they’re just a
quality soccer team and
worked it a lot better up top
than we did.”
The Trevians added an
insurance goal when junior
Lilly Frentzel knocked in
a rebound off of a Nicole
Kaspi shot with 18:51 remaining
in the game. The
goal was the first of Frentzel’s
varsity career.
“It was honestly incredible,
I was so flustered
with so many ideas going
on in my head but my
first thought was ‘me. I
need to do what I’m supposed
to be doing, but at
the same time not think
about myself and just play
the game,’” Frentzel said.
“As soon as I got the ball,
I saw Nicole’s going and
knew I was going to have
her back. She didn’t get it
and I had her back. I took it
upon myself to try to make
an impact.”
Despite her team not
scoring a goal through its
first two games, Straka is
excited for the upcoming
season and knew she and
her squad could take a
lot from the game against
one of the top teams in the
state.
“At the end of the game,
we talked about raising
the bar higher for us,” she
said. “We took away confidence
that we can be competitive
against one of the
top teams in the state and
that we can be in the game.
“We also have to put
some shots on goal to be
able to improve our competitive
nature.”
