Taking time I like to pride myself on my efficiency and productivity – If you tell me something will take two hours I will try and accomplish in one. Unfortunately not being superhuman has frustrated my efforts on many occasions. I reflected on my insatiable need to get things done as I answered work emails on my mobile whilst laying on a hospital bed at St George’s waiting for the Doctor to see me about my wounded hand (a story for another day!) I can safely say this is probably unhealthy behaviour and it reminded me how fast-paced out 24-7 society has become. Technology designed to serve us has become our master and there is a constant stream of information to consume and activities to keep us occupied day or night (my gym is now open 24-7 as is the Starbucks in Hooley for those wanting a 3am latte…!) Whilst the freedom it promises is alluring perhaps it is a trap? Jesus was a busy man. He worked as a carpenter but also preached, travelled, performed miracles and healed the sick. What interests me are his priorities. It would have been easy to try and work 24-7. There were plenty of people to heal. However he regularly chose to take time out to be with his father God. Whether walking on the Mount of Olives or crossing the red sea he made time with God a priority. God promises that he will give us rest when we give Him our worries and anxieties and trust Him. He invites us to spend time with Him; allowing Him to speak and bring peace. Perhaps you’ve been too busy to consider God, maybe He seems like yet another thing to add to your ever-growing list. I have found that it is in spending time with Him and trusting Him that I find rest. Why not take an hour out; find a place you feel comfortable where you are not distracted, turn off the mobile and ask God to meet with you and to speak to you. If you have a Bible you might try reading some of the Psalms – number 23 is a good place to start.
