His fi rst sequence focussed on the Doulton Fountain in Glasgow Green. A beautiful terracotta fountain built to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee and a celebration of the Empire. His next two shows were both set in Barcelona where we had a tour of one of the Gaudi Apartments. His last sequence brought us back to Glasgow and a visit to ‘The Tall Ship’, the Glenlee, which was built in the Bay Yard in Port Glasgow and is now renovated and berthed at The Riverside Museum. As usual it was intriguing to see places, known and unknown, through someone else’s camera lens. Colin was unable to join us so thanks to Ronnie and Bill who stepped up with some new shows: ‘The Beast from the East’ from Ronnie and the ‘Scottish Maritime Museum’ from Bill, and a few older shows from Ronnie, Kate and Hugh, which were a pleasure to see again. Our next meeting will be on the 8th of April and will feature shows from the ‘girls’ in the club. Please feel free to join us. 33 Bridge Of Weir Horticultural Society The Gardeners’ Question Time panel of members, Anne and Alan, was joined by Colin Garrow and Fiona Hamilton. Colin’s gardening passion became his career and ultimately he was Renfrewshire’s Park Superintendant. Anne and Fiona specialized in Amenity Horticulture. Alan, like many gardeners, specializes in vegetables. The panel was thus well qualified to field all questions: Hellebores, are currently in fashion. They like shady, gravelly sites and will produce numerous seedlings. To get a true plant, lift and divide after fl owering but for a surprise, bring on a few seedlings. Equally promiscuous are Meconopsis which will grow profusely in the right conditions, particularly after a period of stratifi cation (cold temperatures). Try sprinkling seeds around the mother plant, then wait till spring for signs of seedlings. An established Skimmia was shedding yellow-tinted leaves (chlorosis). Could a new dog in the neighbourhood be to blame? This was unlikely. Skimmias can be a little temperamental over soil conditions but, in this instance, old age might be the reason. A good iron-based feed (Sequestrene) might help and, as a last resort, a good prune. Apples and Plums should never be pruned at the same time. To avoid the fungal spores which cause the disease ‘Silverleaf’ in stone fruits - which would enter newly-cut branches in spring - Plums, Damsons and Cherries, should be pruned at the end of summer. Apples are pruned and shaped in spring. The long, cold winter has affected chitting potatoes. These are ready but growing conditions are not. To warm the soil, cover with cloches, weed suppressant fabric or even old carpet. For those working on school projects, the answer is to bring on potatoes in grow-bags, a greenhouse or poly-tunnel. A gardener’s joy in her tomatoes was diminished by the sight of discoloured, curling leaves and blotchy fruits which, although delicious in stews, could not be seen near a salad. This was likely to be early blight. Vigilance is essential, particularly in a poly-tunnel where temperature, air ventilation and watering are key and less easy to control than in a greenhouse. two tomato plants per grow-bag were recommended, preferably with 2 x 10” filled pots sunk into the compost. We are all aware of global changes and changing weather conditions were a theme through the evening. This informal exchange of information, at a local level, between the experts and audience was very helpful.
