New standards due as the use of
surveillance drones takes off
New Drone Standards are to be unveiled which are expected
to lead to strengthened public confidence in safety, security
and compliance within the industry.
The announcement was made at an event at the House of
Lords sponsored by Field Marshal The Lord Guthrie of
Craigiebank GCB, LVO, OBE, DL on behalf of the British
Standards Institution (BSI) and Drone Major Group, whose
founder and Chief Executive is Chairman of the BSI Committee
responsible for Drone Standards.
The event was attended by BSI Chairman Sir David Brown,
politicians including Aviation Minister Baroness Sugg, and
other senior stakeholders in the drone industry.
Sir David Brown commented “BSI is playing a pivotal role
in supporting the exciting global future for drones through its
work on standards for Unmanned Aircraft Systems. Standards
accelerate innovation, boost productivity and enable trade,
while promoting safety and consumer protection.”
Robert Garbett, in his role as Chairman of the BSI
Committee on Drone Standards, stated in a speech that “after
several years of work and global collaboration, detailed draft
standards are expected to reach BSI Committee stage by
Spring 2018, following which there will be a period of wider
consultation, expected then to lead to adoption shortly
thereafter.”
He commented “The development and adoption of the first
quality and safety standards for the drone industry will make
2018 a pivotal year for an industry which is set to become a
global phenomenon. It is the year when British and world
standards will be crystallised, energising the industry, and
enabling it to meet its full potential to the benefit of UK plc,
and indeed economies worldwide.
“Drones, empowered by Standards that can be trusted and
relied upon are the key to many of our economic, transport,
security, environmental and productivity challenges of today.
They will open up new avenues to innovation that we can only
begin to imagine! Two years ago drones were forecast to
spawn a $100 billion industry by 2020. But today the
opportunities are perceived to be even greater than this since
such projections were based upon available data at that time
which predominantly focused on the air industry, and we
define the entire drone industry as covering surface,
underwater, air, and space. If you look at the entire picture the
figures are much larger and growing faster than anyone
expected. If you then forecast the impact of integrating drone
technologies across these environments, the figures will take
on an ever more exciting dimension.”
THE BOTTOM LINE
IN ASSOCIATION WITH CSL
The interview that gets
the facts from the top
This month Simon Banks
talks to David Mudd,
Business Development
Director IoT at the British
Standards Institute (BSI). BSI is the
business standards company that helps
organisations make excellence a habit.
The BSI recently announced their IoT Kitemark scheme. What
will this scheme achieve?
The scheme focuses on the security of devices, something often
overlooked by manufacturers. As more and more devices connect to
the internet, the concerns over interoperability and security also
increase. We have been working collaboratively with a range of
stakeholders from product manufacturers to network providers and
government agencies to develop assurance schemes that will be
relevant today and in the future. Our assurance services include a new
IoT laboratory to enable BSI to provide the testing services that suit
market needs. CSL became the first stakeholder to be involved in our
recent IoT Test Pilot project. Client involvement at the development
stage is critical for BSI and we truly value these collaborative
relationships. We are thankful to CSL for the time as well as the
resource given up in support of this!
There is lots of discussion around GDPR. What do businesses
need to do to be ready for its launch in May 2018 and what
resources are available to them?
There are third parties available to ensure you are Cyber Safe. These
organisations can assess how your company handles data and help
you take the right precautions. Speak to your suppliers to confirm the
solutions they are providing you with are encrypted and ready for when
GDPR comes into force. You can then build this together as part of
your company’s overall strategy. Finally, don’t delay, you need to act
now! BSI are here to help. Visit the BSI website to find out more about
what we are doing and advice we can provide on GDPR.
How will this impact Fire & Security Installers?
It will impact Installers in different ways depending on the types of
installations they are completing. Intruder, Fire, CCTV, Access Control,
all have different potential vulnerabilities and handle different types of
data. In addition, where that data is being sent, where it is stored and
how it is sent also impact the requirements. A joined up approach
with suppliers is the best way to prepare.
What are the penalties for non-compliance?
For the first time, monetary sanctions of up to 4% of global annual
turnover or €20m (whichever is greater) will apply to breaches of the
regulation. It also includes additional measures to protect the personal
data of EU citizens. This is not something any company, big or small,
can take lightly. It is vital companies get the right systems and
processes in place to ensure they are compliant.
YOU SAID IT!
“CSL are a partner of ours who specialise in helping businesses increase efficiency and safety with
their innovative security, access and alarm systems.”
