Johnny Carroll-Pell
Rocket Artist
20-year-old Johnny Carroll-Pell is a prolific
painter and member of the Rocket Artists
collective, a group of artists with and without
learning disabilities who develop their arts
practice within Phoenix Brighton. This month
Rocket Artists presents Art by Johnny, a solo
show of more than 30 of his paintings. We talk
to Johnny’s mum, Angela Pell, about his work.
Johnny really was away in his own world
for such a long time. Now he’s able to make
his needs understood in one or two-word
utterances but, when he was younger, he had
no language at all. You hear stories where an autistic
person finds an interest that makes them
more interactive and more verbal. Painting
hasn’t necessarily done that for Johnny, but he
really enjoys it.
He’s very quick – he’ll make a large painting
