INTERVIEW ........................................... Lola Hoad One Girl Band founder and podcaster What is your podcast about? The One Girl Band podcast is an extension of the One Girl Band community. It celebrates women who are doing their own thing, working for themselves, creating businesses – whether they’ve been doing it for one year or ten. I opened a women-only coworking space around a year ago and started the podcast a few weeks later. At first it was just me talking into a mic but I’ve started introducing guests. It’s for women who are in the creative industries and maybe wanting to go freelance, or others who have their own businesses but are feeling stuck. It’s a weekly series of pep talks to keep them going. The response has been amazing. Why did you start it? I write a lot - I put out a newsletter and blog posts - but podcasting is a really interesting format. It’s more personal. From the first episode I decided that it was going to be guerrilla style: unpolished but still purposeful, because I feel that people can relate to that more easily. Perfection isn’t something I strive for! I put a lot of myself into it and for a good reason. For my work as a business coach, I need people to relate to me. I’ve been exactly where they are, and the same is true of my guests. Around 40% of my client enquiries come via the podcast. Do you recommend it as a marketing tool? Yes. Especially if you are service based. It’s a really clear way of putting your ‘why’ out there, which is something I speak about a lot. Why are you doing it? What mark do you want to make on the world? The podcast is a really good way of getting that across. It brings another feel because you can convey tone so easily. It’s really important to me that it’s authentic. Otherwise what’s the point? Can anyone make a podcast? One hundred percent. I’ve been on other people’s podcasts where the set-up is amazing, with mics and headsets, but I have just a Globe mic. Some people use a dictaphone or even an iPhone. It’s so accessible, anyone can do it. I think my mic cost £30. How do we get started? I tend to write myself a script, otherwise I go off on tangents. If I need to interview someone who can’t be there in person, I use a program called Zencaster that allows me to record their track and my track separately. It’s kind of like Skype but a lot better quality. I upload it into GarageBand on my Mac and clean it up; taking out the ums and the coughs and the dog barking and the seagulls… then I upload it onto iTunes. Is there a big community of podcasters in <strong>Brighton</strong>? No, but there should be. There’s nowhere in town that you can just go to record a podcast. We’re looking for investment to develop a new workspace where we can have a podcasting room. I’d love to run workshops. As told to Lizzie Lower onegirlband.co.uk/podcast ....93....
