Jane Howard’s Fables from the Farm It’s that joyous time of year for new arrivals on the farm and Jane has some very important dates in her diary Spring officially kicked off on 20th March but after that especially cold and snowy snap, the arrival of the real yet unofficial thing, whenever that happens will be very warmly welcomed. April usually delivers the goods and heralds lots of changes on the farm and all of them are a cause for great joy. Given hay and somewhere dry to shelter, our hardy native Sussex cows would happily outwinter, but they would churn all the fields into a muddy quagmire and effectively put paid to any expectation of a good flush of spring grass. Instead, our grass was only winter grazed by sheep, so once the soil reaches a temperature of about 10C it will turn green and start to grow again and will be the sweetest, freshest grass of the year. Having been housed since November, turnout is a cause for major bovine celebration. Tentative at first, the cows come out of the barn and suddenly realising they’re free they stampede off, frolicking and kicking their heels in the air in a complete show of joy and happiness. For the mums things will settle down after about three laps of the field but for the calves it’s a completely different matter. Having been born in February and March they’ve never really had the opportunity to test drive all four legs. But once tried there’s no stopping them. Round and round they go, turbo charged, until, they run out of muscle power and puff. For the bull, the advent of spring is even more exciting. George, our resident stock bull, who I’ve written about often, has now packed his bags and set off up the M40 to pastures new in Great Missenden. After three years of loyal service, his two-year-old daughters – now known as bulling heifers - are ready to come into the breeding herd so we needed a new sire. Enter Eric, who will arrive on the farm at the end of this month. But Eric won’t be the only arrival this month. The first swallows should come back to Coopers from south of the Sahara (which makes George’s journey seem a little insignificant) any time from 14th April. I know this because I keep a diary of events that happen on the farm – and have done so ever since we came here twenty years ago. In our first year a purveyor of animal feeds and mineral blocks gave me a swanky A4 desk diary, and has done so every year since. With no appointments or meetings to write in, it makes for a wonderful record of our farming year and of what’s going on in the natural world. This recording of the times of recurring natural phenomena, especially in relation to climate is called phenology and it’s a very addictive hobby. Frog spawn always appears in the ponds at the beginning of March and is now just hatching into a wriggling black soup – funny how despite advancing years, the journey of tadpoles into frogdom remains an absolute fascination. I’ve also seen our first bumble bees, butterflies, ladybirds and moths. But what I haven’t yet heard is the cuckoo. When we first came to Coopers, they were a common sound (anywhen from 12th April, if you’re interested) but last year I only heard the cuckoo once and that wasn’t here on this farm so it looks like they are in deep trouble.
