12 | April 5, 2018 | The lake forest leader NEWS LakeForestLeader.com THE WILMETTE BEACON Bloodied burglar found on train after fleeing Kenilworth Davontay Thomas, 20, of Chicago, was arrested and charged with burglary, attempt to disarm a peace officer and two counts of aggravated battery to a peace officer following a series of events during the overnight hours of Wednesday, March 28, that ended at the Metra station in Evanston. The Kenilworth and Wilmette police departments issued joint statements on what led to the arrest. According to Kenilworth, an officer initiated a traffic stop at 11:48 p.m. Tuesday, March 27, on Sheridan Road at Kenilworth Avenue. The officer spoke with the driver, later identified as Thomas, and four passengers, one of which was a 4-yearold child. Thomas allegedly failed to produce identification and fled in the vehicle westbound on Kenilworth Avenue from Sheridan Road at a high rate of speed. A pursuit was not initiated because it was a minor traffic violation and consideration of the child passenger’s safety. Officers discovered the vehicle approximately five minutes later, parked at Roslyn Road and Melrose Avenue in Kenilworth. Thomas had fled on foot prior to the officer’s arrival, but all four passengers remained near the vehicle. According to Wilmette Police, an auto repair shop in the 1200 block of Green Bay Road, near where the Kenilworth suspect was last seen, had been broken into. A short time later, at 4:57 a.m., a Wilmette officer observed a subject on the southbound Metra commuter train matching the description of the driver from the Kenilworth incident. THE NORTHBROOK TOWER Park commissioners approve 2018 budget ordinance The Northbrook Park District Board approved the District’s annual budget and appropriation of funds at its Wednesday, March 28 meeting. The budget covers fiscal year 2018 beginning Jan. 1, 2018, and ending Dec. 31, 2018. The Park District is forecasting $21.4 million in operating revenue for fiscal year 2018. Property taxes total $10.8 million and represents the largest source of revenue for the District. Based on a median home value of $553,400, a Northbrook resident is expected to pay approximately $657 in property taxes to the Park District in 2018. Expenditures total $21.9 million and includes more than $3.5 million in capital projects. The 2018 capital budget includes $250,000 in planning and design costs for future indoor programming space at Techny Prairie Park and Fields and $350,000 for renovations at Sportsman’s Golf Course. These projects are part of the District’s 2018- 2022: New Places to Play Initiative. The combined annual budget and appropriation ordinance appropriates the monies that are necessary to cover the projected expenses and liabilities the District expects to incur in the next fiscal cycle. “The budget and appropriation ordinance creates a ceiling on the Park District’s expenditures during the fiscal period and therefore is structured to include appropriations of every dollar that can reasonably be anticipated to be received and spent,” Board President Penny Randel said. THE GLENVIEW LANTERN Longtime Glenview resident remembers his roots until the end From humble beginnings, raised as the youngest of 10 orphans by a foster mother, Harry Kloeppel went on to become a successful businessman, loving family man and generous contributor to society. Kloeppel, a longtime Glenview resident, died March 26 at age 87. After graduating from Marquette University, Kloeppel joined the U.S. Marines and was stationed in the Pacific during the Korean War. In 1976, after working in sales for many years, he founded Harry J. Kloeppel & Associates in Glenview, and only stepped down about five years ago. The company specializes in laboratory designs and installations for academic research, industrial laboratories, K-12 science labs and the life sciences industries, including biotech, pharmaceutical and medical device companies. “From corporations making food to companies saving lives, they all have laboratories and research and development, and that really doesn’t happen without the basis of what his company did, which was to design and install laboratories,” said Allen Keaveney, company vice president. “He made casework. That was his life. He loved to layout, to design, to work with contractors and customers. That is what he loved to do,” said Frank Gardner, former project manager. Annual fundraiser to support disability programs in local schools Submitted by Lake Forest- Lake Bluff Learning Disabilities Association The Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Learning Disabilities Association is gearing up for its beloved biennial Spring Marché shopping boutique on April 26, at The Lake Forest Club. This year’s event will feature approximately two dozen vendors offering a dazzling array of goods from children’s clothing and vintage jewelry to eco-safe beauty products and great gifts for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day or graduation. All proceeds raised from Spring Marché will support the Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Learning Disabilities Association Make A Difference grant program, which annually awards a wide variety of educational supports and specialized equipment to Lake Forest and Lake Bluff public schools, The School of Saint Mary and Lake Forest Country Day School. While these grant items greatly benefit children with learning differences, many of their classmates enjoy using them as well. Recent grants awarded include the funding for three sensory suites; one at Deer Path Middle School (called the Go Zone), the second at Lake Bluff Middle School and the third, awarded this year, at Lake Forest Country Day School. Additionally, the Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Learning Disabilities Association has funded a wheelchair lift for one of the new Lake Forest High School vans, white board desks, reading and writing supports, special social and emotional support programs and a generous amount of leveled reading books for the elementary grade schools. In prior years the Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Learning Disabilities Association also contributed to the Spirit of 67 Foundation grant for the Deer Path Middle Scool East climbing wall, and collaborated with the Lake Forest High School Foundation on TEACCH, a learning program for high school students on the autism spectrum. To date, the Make A Difference grant program has given more than $370,000 in educational supports to local schools. Event chair Pamela Hense aims to make this year’s Marché the best yet. “Spring Marché is really about enhancing the learning environment for children in the Lake Forest and Lake Bluff communities, to help them realize academic and social success. Marché shoppers and vendors help support a worthwhile cause with the added bonus of finding some fantastic gifts and enjoying a fun outing with friends,” Hense said. Spring Marché will be open for daytime shopping from 9 a.m.-3 p.m on April 26. Admission for the event will be $15 with an advance purchased ticket and $20 with day of purchase ticket. Raffle tickets will be for sale. There will be two lucky winners, enjoying a gift basket filled with items from all the participating vendors.
