One of my biggest
pet-peeves
is when someone
tries to argue a topic
without the facts.
That very situation happened
more times than I
could count leading up to
the last election.
During conversations
with certain family
members, I realized that
a bulk of the information
they were receiving, and
trying to use to argue
their point, was false and
from sources that had an
agenda.
Lake Bluff Park District
2018 Summary
The Lake Bluff golfing
community is up in arms.
During February and
March 2018, the Park District
held a series of meetings
to inform the community
of the financial crisis
caused by the continued
operation of its golf course.
In each of the last 18
years, the golf fund has
borne a large deficit. To
balance its budget, the Park
District has had to borrow
from other intradistrict accounts.
Thus, needed improvements
to Sunrise Park
The amount of misinformation
that was floating
around Facebook was
staggering to me.
However, misinformation
or not, I’m always
up for a good discussion.
I don’t think anyone is
right or wrong, but I do
think our experiences
shape our beliefs. On a
more local level, Lake
Forest and Lake Bluff
have plenty of hot-button
issues going on at the
moment.
Two recent topics
have seen quite a bit of
coverage in The Leader.
The first is the National
School Walkout and the
second is the ongoing discussion
of the Lake Bluff
Golf Club.
Two residents felt
strongly enough to send
in Letters to the Editor to
give their take on each of
those subjects.
Personally, I think
it’s important to have
and Beach, Blair Park and
Pool, Artesian Park and
others have had to be put
on hold. This is no longer
acceptable to the district’s
taxpayers or Board of
Commissioners. The golfers
do not want to believe
the truth in the matter.
The Park District has explored
all options and consulted
with many financial
and golf course experts,
and has concluded the golf
course cannot be saved.
The taxpayers are fed up.
The golf course does not
lead to increased property
values. There is little likelihood
that a major donor
can be found to bail it out.
The golf course land can
never be developed and
must remain open land.
No plans are in the works
informed discussions on
topics that concern us.
There have been a lot
of controversial policy
changes that our president
has made since taking
office.
One sparked an interesting
conversation
between myself and a
Harvard alumnus travelling
home to Ohio from
the Buffalo, N.Y. airport
last summer.
We had a conversation,
expressed our views, listened
to the other’s point
and countered all in an
airport bookstore.
The conversation never
turned mean or heated,
but was a simple exchange
of opinion and
thought.
At the end of the
conversation, he even
thanked me for the talk,
stating that it was rare to
have such an even-keel
exchange. It was refreshing,
to be honest.
for its land use once the
golf course is closed. The
facts have been clearly delineated
on the Lake Bluff
Park District’s website,
on freely distributed loose
leaf publications and at the
open meetings.
Lake Forest’s Deer Path
Course is just two-and-ahalf
miles down the road.
An intergovernmental
agreement can easily be arranged
for its use by Lake
Bluff Park District golfers.
Let’s be rid of the golf
course, pay off the accrued
debts and concentrate on
improving the Park District’s
greatest property assets,
Sunrise Park and Lake
Michigan shore and beach.
Janice Schnobrich, Lake
Bluff resident
I think we need a little
more of that in today’s
world.
As a society, we need
to arm ourselves with accurate
information from a
reputable source, and share
our thoughts and ideas
with others. We’re not going
to agree on everything
as a society, but if we can
take the time to listen and
understand someone else’s
opinion, maybe everything
will run a little smoother in
the future.
As a reader, you are
always welcome to share
your opinions with the
