IRRIGATION
The irrigation controls in the cul-de-sac areas have been turned
back on to allow watering again. If you do not see an improvement
in the greening of the turf, see dead areas or if other common
areas are looking as though they are struggling, please contact
Graham Management immediately so the issue can be resolved.
SPECIAL THANKS
Thanks to Pat and Gayle Fain for all their efforts performed when
gathering refuse encountered when they take their daily walks
through the neighborhood. Your efforts are much appreciated
(and noticed)!
ANNUAL COMMITTEE PLANTING EVENT
Mark your calendars for the annual Westcreek planting event
scheduled for Saturday, April 21 st at 8 AM. We will be replacing
damaged shrubs, plants and introducing many new flowers to
brighten up our neighborhood! The group will meet at the pool
on Forest Heights at 8 AM with coffee and donuts for the early
birds. Neighborhood students or Boy Scouts looking to earn
community service hours are encouraged to come help the group.
Our village needs extra special effort this year considering all the
cold weather we had in January and February this year - it really
took a toll on many ornamentals across our village. Hope to see
you there!!!
YARD OF THE MONTH
The Westcreek Yard of the Month program will resume beginning
in May, with yards being reviewed in late April. Remember, it
never hurts to add lots of color to your bedding and planter areas
to brighten up your yard. Attention to detail like well-trimmed bushes, trees and
a lawn that is green and filled in nicely won’t hurt your chances to win an award.
Good luck to all that go the extra distance to make their yard and garden areas look
extra special and presentable - we all enjoy the results.
APRIL GARDENING TIPS
FIGHT WEEDS!!! Many lawns may be fighting extensive weed intrusion due to the
ample amount of rainfall we experienced in January/February. Treating your lawn
with slow release 3-1-2 ratio fertilizers are recommended under the following
formulations:
• 19-4-10 Nitro Phos Super Turf
• 18-4-6 Fertilome Southwest Greenmaker
• 18-0-6 Fertilome Zero Phosphate Formula
• 15-5-10 Southwest Fertilizer Premium Gold
• 20-0-10 Bonide Premium Lawn Food
Fire Ants have also been on the rise again due to the frequent rains we had in
January and February. Please be on the lookout and take care to not get attacked
when sitting down and performing seeding/planting work.
PLANT CARE
• If you have any orchids, move them outside now to a shady spot. You can hang
them from baskets or on fences or walls as well.
• Prune any shrubs you see blooming in the spring now. Azaleas, Wisteria, Quince,
Forsythia or Climbing Roses (once they begin to fade) should be pruned/trimmed
and not allowed to grow unchecked.
• DO NOT plant Wisteria near trees, they will not thrive.
• Feed all your containerized plants now, before it gets too hot. Feeding nutrients
can damage root systems in warmer weather.
• Feed Hibiscus now with specialized Hibiscus food.
• If you are planning to plant Caladiums, do so in slightly acidic soil with adequate
drainage as they do best under such conditions.
• If you plan to add any shrubs, do so before it gets too hot, as once the weather
turns warmer it will be difficult to keep the roots adequately hydrated until they
set.
• Be sure to trim any flowers that have bloomed nicely to promote further growth
and bloom events.
• Be sure to pinch the tips from Coleus and Copper plants to allow for thickening.
