INTRODUCTION<br />

As an ordained minister of the gospel, I have had numerous privileges to<br />

counsel and officiate at weddings. As couple after couple comes for<br />

counseling in preparation for a wedding, it has always been evident to me<br />

that generally speaking, young people have no clue on what marriage is all<br />

about. I won't be stretching the truth if I state that, for most young people<br />

marriage is “the wedding” and probably sex thereafter. Even as I have<br />

gone through lesson after lesson with these young people, I always marry<br />

them off knowing pretty well that they are yet to figure out what marriage<br />

really is. Marriage counseling sessions are very helpful, no kidding, but I<br />

believe, it is after the young people have said “I do” that they need real<br />

marriage counseling – because then, they are indeed married. It is for<br />

this reason that I decided to read extensively on this issue of marriage. I<br />

have read as many books on marriage as I could lay my hands on. One<br />

truth is now established in my mind: marriage has a lot to do with Paul's<br />

counsel in Ephesians 5:25. He says there: “Husbands love your wives as<br />

Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her;” and his other<br />

admonition to wives “to submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For the<br />

husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his
