This segment of the
streetscaping project is anticipated
to be completed in
2019, and is part of a larger
street overhaul project estimated
to cost about $15
million over several years.
Water rates
The council also voted
Wednesday to approve an
increase in water rates for
non-Lockport residents living
in Lockport Township.
For years, unincorporated
township residents have paid
15 percent less on their water
bills than their counterparts
in the City of Lockport. This
variance was ruled outdated
and no longer necessary, so
the council had previously
agreed to raise the township
rate, making it equal for all
residents.
Some debate broke out
over when the change
should be implemented. Legally,
the City has to give
residents and township officials
60-days notice, though
Streit was in favor of putting
the raise in effect on
Oct. 1, which would give
the township six-months
notice, “out of courtesy,
since the rule has been this
way for so long.”
This was contested by
Perretta, who said the 60-
day minimum was plenty of
notice.
“We’re making this
change, we should be collecting
our money as soon
as possible,” she said.
Other board members
backed up her claim, and
the board eventually voted
to pass the motion with
the stipulation that the new
rates will go into effect on
July 1.
All the new revenue from
the increased township rates
will go to the Lockport Water
Department.
