WELCOME TO MARCH HOLUALOA OHANA!
The school year is going by so fast! There are so
many great things going on the classroom with lots of
academics. Additionally, Holualoa School has lots of
other items scheduled this month. We started March
off recognizing our Students of the Month for Self
Directed Learners. Holualoa School continues to offer
awesome movie nights, put on by Deb Yoshimura and
Tammy Aiona, and assisted by community partners
(mahalo).
This year our school is looking forward to
celebrating 120 years of island culture in our Holualoa
Spring Festival performance. Each grade level has
already picked a song, and they are excited to perform
for you. The whole Holualoa community is invited,
including Holualoa alumni! Our SpringFest is fast
approaching on Friday, March 16th!
The PTO is reaching out to ask for your help once
again with the Springfest Bake sale. They continue to
break sales records and it is all because of YOU! They
will need help in the booth starting at 7:30 am. Setup
will be in the same location as WinterFest. If you are
able to help work the booth, please let me know. All
volunteers will have the opportunity to watch your
child's performance. They will also be seeking
donations of items to sell. The PTO continue to have
great success with coffee and lemonade sales,
homemade goodies and food items such as musubi,
School Safety: What we are doing and how you can help!
Key areas of safety we are currently working on as a school with the Department of
Education, County of Hawaii and our Holualoa Community:
1. Ways to mitigate/reduce traffic congestion before and after school
2. Providing safe walking paths along the road in front of the school
3. Ensure student and staff are prepared for emergency situations
4. How can we eventually minimize the impact of having a road through campus
5. Safe access to the school offices and services for all stakeholders
Key issues we are working with…

We have had meetings with Department architects around creating a long-term
Master Plan for the school facilities.
Recently, I met with DOE and County officials to discuss the creation of a 6 ft level
path for pedestrians in front of the whole length of the school.
As a school, we have regular prescribed safety drills to ensure students and staff
know the procedures/protocols in an emergency situation.

We will be holding meetings with stakeholders around the location of the school
offices and other support services to make them safely accessible to all
stakeholders.
How you can help…

Drop-off: Please use the front of the school. Using the area by the basketball
court is a danger to both the students who are being dropped off and increases
frustration by our neighbors up the road
Checking in to the office: Please help us by ALWAYS checking into the office. It is
critical whether you are just running in to give your student something they forgot
or staying longer to ensure that we are aware of all visitors to our campus.
Share your input: around safety or any of the issues I have mentioned directly to
myself or Ms. Daniel or through PTO & School Community Council reps
Looking for additional safety information? The Hawaii Department of Education
website has additional information.
Latest Happenings….the WASC Visit
You may remember that the school went through the WASC Accreditation process in
November. We finally got the official findings which included:
A Few of the Areas of Strength Highlights:

Well trained teachers who are open to learning, sharing and implementing a wide
variety of instructional strategies that captures, engages and differentiates for the
learning needs of students.
There is a strong sense of community among all stakeholders which has created a
very supportive and inclusive atmosphere of mutual trust which allows the
majority of students to feel safe in taking academic risks and leads to their
academic success.
The school library, Hawaiiana, and gardening resource classes utilize local
traditions and knowledge to build students understanding of individual culture.
A Few of the Areas to Improve Highlights:

The administration and ILT work with the faculty to ensure agreement on the use
of communication tools in order to improve school communications with all
stakeholders

The school and district administration address the issues of ADA access to all parts
of the campus and address the safety issue of the road through the middle of the
campus that creates a safety issue for students and staff.
Addressing the gap between student who are High Need (SPED, ELL,
Disadvantaged) and their Non-High Need Peers
Consistency within and between grade level throughout the school in terms of
policies and curriculum implementation
If you would like to join the discussion, please come to one of the School
Community Council Meetings that are held each month.
