dismisses IGP’s suit against Senate

High Court, Abuja,
yesterday dismissed the suit
filed by the Inspector-
General of Police, Ibrahim
Idris, alleging violation of
his fundamental human
rights by the Senate.
The judge said the suit
lacked merit as Section 88
and 89 of the Nigeria’s
Constitution empowers the
lawmakers to carry out
investigations on issues of
public interest.
Joined in the suit are the
Senate President, Bukola
Saraki, the senator
representing Bauchi
Central Senatorial District,
Isah Misau and members
of the ad-hoc committee that
heard complaints of
financial misappropriation
leveled against the Police.

LAGOS—THE Lagos
State Government has
said plans are on for
engagement with the media
for better appreciation of its
programmes and
communication to the public
aimed at growing the
economy and fast-tracking
development across the
state.
Speaking on engagement
of media on government
policies at the flag-off of the
annual ministerial briefing
in Alausa, Ikeja, to mark the
third anniversary of
Governor Akinwunmi
Ambode-led government,
Commissioner for

“His right has not been
infringed to require the
court’s intervention,
inviting the applicant is a

the judge said.
Mr Idris had approached
the court seeking a
declaration that the
investigative activities of the
Senate Ad-Hoc Committee
breached his rights as the
Head of the Police Force.
Information and Strategy,
Kehinde Bamigbetan, said
it was necessary, as the
public sometimes
misinterpret government’s
intention, especially with
regard to new policies.
According to Bamigbetan,
''The strategic engagements
would involve the interface
of relevant segments of the
media and public with
ministries, departments and
agencies germane to the
implementation of policies,
such that government’s
intentions are well
communicated. He said it
would facilitate the
implementation of such
programmes and
ultimately deepen
development of Lagos.''

debunked reports that its
chairman, Theophilus
Danjuma has resigned.
Head of Media and
Communications of the
Committee, Alkasim
Abdulkadir, disclosed this
in a statement in Abuja
yesterday.
There were media reports
that Danjuma, a former
defence minister had
resigned from the
committee.
He said: “The attention of
the Presidential Committee
on the North East Initiative
has been drawn to reports
and social media posts on
the purported resignation
of PCNI Chairman.
“This statement hereby
debunks the reports and
states that Lt. Gen. TY
Danjuma (retd) remains
Chairman of the PCNI.''
RAINY SEASON: NCAA issues weather
hazard alert to pilots, airline operators

Civil
Aviation Authority, NCAA,
yesterday issued a weather
hazard alert to all pilots and
airline operators indicating
hazards associated with
flight operations during the
rainy season.
The Director-General of
NCAA, Capt. Muhtar
Usman, issued the alert in
an Advisory Circular to the
airlines in Lagos.
Usman said in the circular
that NCAA-AEROMET-25
was issued based on the
Seasonal Rainfall
Prediction (SRP) released
for 2018 by the Nigerian
Meteorological Agency
(NiMet).
He said the agency had
predicted March/April and
May/June 2018 as the onset
for rainy season in the
Southern and Northern
parts of Nigeria
respectively.
“This alert is quite
imperative at the outset of
the rainy season which is
usually accompanied with
severe thunderstorms and
many other hazardous
weather phenomena such
as turbulence, microburst,
low level wind shear and
hail events.
“The above mentioned
factors are known to pose
obvious threat to aircraft
operations,” Usman said.
He urged the pilots,
operators and Air Traffic
Controllers to take note of
their
various
responsibilities.
“Air Traffic Controllers
may temporarily close
airspace when hazardous
weather conditions such as
severe thunderstorms,
squall lines, microburst
or low level wind shear
are observed or forecast
by Nimet.
“Flight Crews/Operators
and Air Traffic Controllers
shall ensure adherence to
aerodrome weather
minima.
“Pilots shall exercise
maximum restraint
whenever adverse weather
is observed or forecast by
Nimet.
“Pilots/Flight crew
members shall obtain
adequate departure, enroute
and destination
weather information and
briefing from Nimet
Aerodrome Meteorological
officer prior to flight
operations,” he said.
Usman advised the
operators to ensure that
necessary measures were
put in place to manage the
effects of flight delays or
cancellations on their
passengers.
He said all stakeholders
were required to ensure
strict compliance as
violations would be
viewed seriously.

Organisation’s
Commission for Africa,
UNWTO - CAF, that the
city was ready to host its
61st International
Conference. The
conference is scheduled to
hold between June 1 and
June 6, 2018 in Abuja.
Speaking yesterday in
Abuja when he received a
delegation from the Ministry
of Information and Culture,
led by its Minister,, Alhaji
Lai Mohammed, Bello
expressed delight over the
choice of Abuja as host city,
saying the event fits well into
the drive of the FCT
Administration to make
Abuja a global tourism and
conference destination.
The Minister, who
commended Lai
Mohammed for the hard
work in securing the hosting
right for the meeting, said:
“For Nigeria to win the
hosting right must have
entailed a lot of hard work.
This is very commendable.
These are all reflections of
how the outer world now
perceives Nigeria. It is a
reflection that this
government is getting it
right and it is something
that we all feel proud of.
''With respect to the
conference, we are going to
give maximum support to
this conference because it
showcases Nigeria and,

MONEY LAUNDERING: FG re-arraigns Dariye’s
son on 6-count charge

yesterday re-arraigned
Miracle, son of former
Plateau State governor,
Joshua Dariye before the
Abuja Division of the
Federal High Court over
alleged money
laundering.
The defendant, who was
alleged to have laundered
N1.5 billion, pleaded not
guilty to an amended 6-
count charge the EFCC
preferred against him
He was docked alongside
a hotel, Apartment le
Paradis.
Specifically, EFCC
alleged that Dariye’s son,
had in 2013, failed to report
a cash transaction of N1.5
billion he received through
the hotel’s bank account.
According to the
prosecution, the amount
was above the threshold of
N10 million permissible by
law.
Besides, EFCC told the
court that the hotel, which
has the defendant as its
Director, was not registered
as Designated Non-
Financial Institution.
The defendant was said
to had contravened section
5(1) (a) of the Money
Laundering Prohibition
Act, 2011, as amended and
punishable under Section
5 (b) of the same Act.
Meanwhile, after the
defendant took his plea,
trial Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu,
allowed him to go home on
his previous bail terms.
The court had earlier
granted him bail in the sum
of N5 million with two
sureties in like sum.
Justice Ojukwu stressed
say that Abuja is ready for
the tourism world.”
Earlier, Alhaji
Mohammed said the team
was in the FCT to kick-start
series of visits and
advocacies to key
stakeholders into Nigeria’s
hosting of the first meeting
of the UNWTO – CAF.
Mohammed said: “Being
the host minister of this
conference makes it
imperative for us to make
your office as the first point
of call. The President has
accepted very graciously to
personally declare the
meeting open and that
makes Mr. President the
first person to be invited.
With this visit, the Minister
of the FCT has become the
second person to be
invited.”
According to the
Information Minister, the
global tourism body
unanimously gave Nigeria
the hosting right for the
meeting during its last
meeting in Addis Ababa in
April 2017, adding, “The
meeting we are planning to
host is very important.
UNWTO, which is the
custodian of the meeting
has a global membership of
158 members, six
associated members and
several others representing
the private sector,
educational institutions,
tourism associations and
local tourism authorities.''
