Commissioner for<br />

failed to establish the<br />

element that constituted<br />

<strong>in</strong> a statement <strong>in</strong> Abuja<br />

yesterday.<br />

There were media reports<br />

that Danjuma, a former<br />

defence m<strong>in</strong>ister had<br />

resigned from the<br />

committee.<br />

He said: “The attention of<br />

the Presidential Committee<br />

on the North East Initiative<br />

has been drawn to reports<br />

and social media posts on<br />

the purported resignation<br />

of PCNI Chairman.<br />

“This statement hereby<br />

debunks the reports and<br />

RAINY SEASON: NCAA issues weather<br />

hazard alert to pilots, airl<strong>in</strong>e operators<br />

yesterday issued a weather<br />

hazard alert to all pilots and<br />

airl<strong>in</strong>e operators <strong>in</strong>dicat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

hazards associated with<br />

flight operations dur<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

ra<strong>in</strong>y season.<br />

The Director-General of<br />

NCAA, Capt. Muhtar<br />

Usman, issued the alert <strong>in</strong><br />

an Advisory Circular to the<br />

airl<strong>in</strong>es <strong>in</strong> Lagos.<br />

Usman said <strong>in</strong> the circular<br />

that NCAA-AEROMET-25<br />

was issued based on the<br />

Seasonal Ra<strong>in</strong>fall<br />

Prediction (SRP) released<br />

for 2018 by the Nigerian<br />

Meteorological Agency<br />

(NiMet).<br />

He said the agency had<br />

predicted March/April and<br />

May/June 2018 as the onset<br />

for ra<strong>in</strong>y season <strong>in</strong> the<br />

Southern and Northern<br />

parts of Nigeria<br />

respectively.<br />

“This alert is quite<br />

imperative at the outset of<br />

the ra<strong>in</strong>y season which is<br />

usually accompanied with<br />

severe thunderstorms and<br />

many other hazardous<br />

weather phe<strong>no</strong>mena such<br />

as turbulence, microburst,<br />

low level w<strong>in</strong>d shear and<br />

hail events.<br />

“The above mentioned<br />

factors are k<strong>no</strong>wn to pose<br />

obvious threat to aircraft<br />

operations,” Usman said.<br />

He urged the pilots,<br />

operators and Air Traffic<br />

Controllers to take <strong>no</strong>te of<br />

their<br />

various<br />

responsibilities.<br />

“Air Traffic Controllers<br />

may temporarily close<br />

airspace when hazardous<br />

weather conditions such as<br />

severe thunderstorms,<br />

squall l<strong>in</strong>es, microburst<br />

or low level w<strong>in</strong>d shear<br />

are observed or forecast<br />

by Nimet.<br />

“Flight Crews/Operators<br />

and Air Traffic Controllers<br />

shall ensure adherence to<br />

aerodrome weather<br />

m<strong>in</strong>ima.<br />

“Pilots shall exercise<br />

maximum restra<strong>in</strong>t<br />

whenever adverse weather<br />

is observed or forecast by<br />

Nimet.<br />

“Pilots/Flight crew<br />

members shall obta<strong>in</strong><br />

adequate departure, enroute<br />

and dest<strong>in</strong>ation<br />

weather <strong>in</strong>formation and<br />

brief<strong>in</strong>g from Nimet<br />

Aerodrome Meteorological<br />

officer prior to flight<br />

operations,” he said.<br />

Usman advised the<br />

operators to ensure that<br />

necessary measures were<br />

put <strong>in</strong> place to manage the<br />

effects of flight delays or<br />

cancellations on their<br />

passengers.<br />

He said all stakeholders<br />

were required to ensure<br />

strict compliance as<br />

violations would be<br />

viewed seriously.<br />

city was ready to host its<br />

61st International<br />

Conference. The<br />

conference is scheduled to<br />

hold between June 1 and<br />

June 6, 2018 <strong>in</strong> Abuja.<br />

Speak<strong>in</strong>g yesterday <strong>in</strong><br />

Abuja when he received a<br />

delegation from the M<strong>in</strong>istry<br />

of Information and Culture,<br />

led by its M<strong>in</strong>ister,, Alhaji<br />

Lai Mohammed, Bello<br />

expressed delight over the<br />

choice of Abuja as host city,<br />

say<strong>in</strong>g the event fits well <strong>in</strong>to<br />

the drive of the FCT<br />

Adm<strong>in</strong>istration to make<br />

Abuja a global tourism and<br />

conference dest<strong>in</strong>ation.<br />

The M<strong>in</strong>ister, who<br />

commended Lai<br />

Mohammed for the hard<br />

work <strong>in</strong> secur<strong>in</strong>g the host<strong>in</strong>g<br />

right for the meet<strong>in</strong>g, said:<br />

“For Nigeria to w<strong>in</strong> the<br />

host<strong>in</strong>g right must have<br />

entailed a lot of hard work.<br />

This is very commendable.<br />

These are all reflections of<br />

how the outer world <strong>no</strong>w<br />

perceives Nigeria. It is a<br />

MONEY LAUNDERING: FG re-arraigns Dariye’s<br />

Federal High Court over<br />

alleged money<br />

launder<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

The defendant, who was<br />

alleged to have laundered<br />

N1.5 billion, pleaded <strong>no</strong>t<br />

guilty to an amended 6-<br />

count charge the EFCC<br />

preferred aga<strong>in</strong>st him<br />

He was docked alongside<br />

a hotel, Apartment le<br />

Paradis.<br />

Specifically, EFCC<br />

alleged that Dariye’s son,<br />

had <strong>in</strong> 2013, failed to report<br />

a cash transaction of N1.5<br />

billion he received through<br />

the hotel’s bank account.<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>g to the<br />

prosecution, the amount<br />

was above the threshold of<br />

N10 million permissible by<br />

law.<br />

Besides, EFCC told the<br />

court that the hotel, which<br />

has the defendant as its<br />

Director, was <strong>no</strong>t registered<br />

as Designated Non-<br />

F<strong>in</strong>ancial Institution.<br />

The defendant was said<br />

to had contravened section<br />

5(1) (a) of the Money<br />

Launder<strong>in</strong>g Prohibition<br />

Act, <strong>2011</strong>, as amended and<br />

punishable under Section<br />

5 (b) of the same Act.<br />

Meanwhile, after the<br />

defendant took his plea,<br />

trial Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu,<br />

allowed him to go home on<br />

his previous bail terms.<br />

The court had earlier<br />

granted him bail <strong>in</strong> the sum<br />

of N5 million with two<br />

sureties <strong>in</strong> like sum.<br />

Justice Ojukwu stressed<br />

say that Abuja is ready for<br />

the tourism world.”<br />

Earlier, Alhaji<br />

Mohammed said the team<br />

was <strong>in</strong> the FCT to kick-start<br />

series of visits and<br />

advocacies to key<br />

stakeholders <strong>in</strong>to Nigeria’s<br />

host<strong>in</strong>g of the first meet<strong>in</strong>g<br />

of the UNWTO – CAF.<br />

Mohammed said: “Be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the host m<strong>in</strong>ister of this<br />

conference makes it<br />

imperative for us to make<br />

your office as the first po<strong>in</strong>t<br />

of call. The President has<br />

accepted very graciously to<br />

personally declare the<br />

meet<strong>in</strong>g open and that<br />

makes Mr. President the<br />

first person to be <strong>in</strong>vited.<br />

With this visit, the M<strong>in</strong>ister<br />

of the FCT has become the<br />

second person to be<br />

<strong>in</strong>vited.”<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>g to the<br />

Information M<strong>in</strong>ister, the<br />

global tourism body<br />

unanimously gave Nigeria<br />

the host<strong>in</strong>g right for the<br />

meet<strong>in</strong>g dur<strong>in</strong>g its last<br />

meet<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Addis Ababa <strong>in</strong><br />

April 2017, add<strong>in</strong>g, “The<br />

meet<strong>in</strong>g we are plann<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

host is very important.<br />

UNWTO, which is the<br />

custodian of the meet<strong>in</strong>g<br />

has a global membership of<br />

158 members, six<br />

associated members and<br />

several others represent<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the private sector,<br />

educational <strong>in</strong>stitutions,<br />

tourism associations and<br />

local tourism authorities.''
