The <str<strong>on</strong>g>Franchis<strong>in</strong>g</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>Australia</strong> 2016 survey, undertaken by Griffith University‟s<br />
Asia-Pacific Centre for <str<strong>on</strong>g>Franchis<strong>in</strong>g</str<strong>on</strong>g> Excellence and supported by <strong>the</strong> Franchise<br />
Council of <strong>Australia</strong>, marks <strong>the</strong> 10th <strong>in</strong>stallment of this def<strong>in</strong>itive benchmark<strong>in</strong>g<br />
study of <strong>Australia</strong>n franchis<strong>in</strong>g. The survey dates back to 1998 and has been<br />
updated every two years s<strong>in</strong>ce.<br />
The headl<strong>in</strong>e f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs of <strong>the</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Franchis<strong>in</strong>g</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>Australia</strong> 2016 survey are be<strong>in</strong>g<br />
released at this week‟s Franchise Council of <strong>Australia</strong> Nati<strong>on</strong>al Franchise<br />
C<strong>on</strong>venti<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> Canberra. The full report will be available <strong>in</strong> January 2017.<br />
Mr Bruce Bills<strong>on</strong>, Executive Chairman of <strong>the</strong> Franchise Council of <strong>Australia</strong>,<br />
said franchis<strong>in</strong>g is a robust, vibrant and excit<strong>in</strong>g part of <strong>the</strong> ec<strong>on</strong>omy,<br />
account<strong>in</strong>g for approximately 4% of all small bus<strong>in</strong>esses <strong>in</strong> <strong>Australia</strong>. He said<br />
<strong>the</strong> survey results show <strong>Australia</strong>‟s franchis<strong>in</strong>g sector has c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>ued to perform<br />
str<strong>on</strong>gly, aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> backdrop of relatively slow ec<strong>on</strong>omic growth.<br />
“The <str<strong>on</strong>g>Franchis<strong>in</strong>g</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>Australia</strong> 2016 survey po<strong>in</strong>ts to a matur<strong>in</strong>g sector, hold<strong>in</strong>g its<br />
own <strong>in</strong> a transiti<strong>on</strong><strong>in</strong>g ec<strong>on</strong>omy follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g boom,” he<br />
said. “Total sales turnover for <strong>the</strong> sector has <strong>rise</strong>n slightly, while employment<br />
has steadily <strong>rise</strong>n and created more permanent full-time jobs. Franchisors are<br />
also predict<strong>in</strong>g growth <strong>in</strong> franchise numbers over <strong>the</strong> next 12 m<strong>on</strong>ths,” Bills<strong>on</strong><br />
added.<br />
Despite <strong>the</strong> difficult ec<strong>on</strong>omic envir<strong>on</strong>ment, franchisors have <strong>on</strong>ce aga<strong>in</strong> met or<br />
exceeded growth targets set <strong>in</strong> 2010, <strong>in</strong>dicat<strong>in</strong>g franchisors were realistic <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong>ir goals and executed <strong>the</strong>ir growth plans effectively. Overall, and especially<br />
compared with <strong>the</strong> private bus<strong>in</strong>ess sector as a whole, <strong>the</strong> franchise sector has<br />
performed str<strong>on</strong>gly – provid<strong>in</strong>g fur<strong>the</strong>r evidence of <strong>the</strong> robustness of <strong>the</strong><br />
franchise bus<strong>in</strong>ess model. Over <strong>the</strong> last 12 m<strong>on</strong>ths, <strong>on</strong> average, franchisor<br />
revenue has <strong>in</strong>creased by 17 per cent and franchisor profit has <strong>in</strong>creased by 22<br />
per cent – outperform<strong>in</strong>g last year‟s forecasts of 13 and 18 per cent respectively.<br />
Franchisee revenue <strong>in</strong>creased by 12 per cent (exceed<strong>in</strong>g last year‟s forecast of<br />
10 per cent) and profit <strong>in</strong>creased by 13 per cent (meet<strong>in</strong>g last year‟s forecast).<br />
As a comparis<strong>on</strong>, <strong>the</strong> n<strong>in</strong>th editi<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> PwC Private Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Barometer<br />
showed that private bus<strong>in</strong>esses estimated <strong>the</strong>ir sales grew by an average of six<br />
per cent and profit by seven per cent over <strong>the</strong> previous 12 m<strong>on</strong>ths.
