systems accredited with banks – a stagger<strong>in</strong>g 75 per cent of smaller systems are<br />

not accredited. This is perhaps an <strong>in</strong>dicati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> difficult and timec<strong>on</strong>sum<strong>in</strong>g<br />

accreditati<strong>on</strong> process adopted by <strong>the</strong> banks, and also <strong>the</strong> fact that over <strong>the</strong> past<br />

few years, banks have been <strong>in</strong>c<strong>on</strong>sistent <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir approach to lend<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong><br />

franchise sector. This presents a huge opportunity for a f<strong>in</strong>ancier to „get it right‟.<br />

The franchis<strong>in</strong>g sector c<strong>on</strong>tributes an estimated $90 billi<strong>on</strong> per year (about<br />

11%) to <strong>the</strong> Gross Domestic Product and employs over 600 000 people <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>Australia</strong>, a figure that between 2002 and 2004 <strong>in</strong>creased by about fourteen<br />

percent and between 2004 and 2006 by about thirteen percent1 Despite its<br />

importance to <strong>the</strong> nati<strong>on</strong>al ec<strong>on</strong>omy, <strong>the</strong>re is little reliable evidence of <strong>the</strong><br />

ec<strong>on</strong>omic effectiveness of <strong>the</strong> operati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> sector. <str<strong>on</strong>g>Franchis<strong>in</strong>g</str<strong>on</strong>g> is portrayed<br />

by its trade associati<strong>on</strong> as a vehicle to transform <strong>in</strong>experienced people <strong>in</strong>to<br />

successful bus<strong>in</strong>ess owners, with higher success rates than for <strong>in</strong>dependent<br />
