ga<strong>in</strong>s through access to established bus<strong>in</strong>ess systems, at lower risk, for<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir own commercial advantage.<br />

AUSTRALIAN FRANCHISING Grow<strong>in</strong>g or Not?<br />

The 2016 <str<strong>on</strong>g>Franchis<strong>in</strong>g</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>Australia</strong> survey is <strong>the</strong> 10th <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> series, which has been<br />

carried out every two years s<strong>in</strong>ce 1998 by Griffith University‟s Asia-Pacific<br />

Centre for <str<strong>on</strong>g>Franchis<strong>in</strong>g</str<strong>on</strong>g> Excellence.<br />

An Executive Summary issued by <strong>the</strong> Centre ahead of <strong>the</strong> full report says,<br />

'Despite a relatively flat ec<strong>on</strong>omy and retail envir<strong>on</strong>ment, <strong>Australia</strong>‟s franchise<br />

sector c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>ues to grow <strong>in</strong> total sales turnover and employment and its<br />

franchisors are c<strong>on</strong>fident of fur<strong>the</strong>r growth <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> next 12 m<strong>on</strong>ths.'<br />

The survey f<strong>in</strong>ds that <strong>the</strong> total annual sales revenue for <strong>Australia</strong>'s entire<br />

franchise sector is estimated at $146 billi<strong>on</strong>, up from $144 billi<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 2014<br />

survey. However, this <strong>rise</strong> of 1.4 percent comes aga<strong>in</strong>st a background of 2.5<br />

percent <strong>in</strong>flati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> y/e 2014 and 1.5 percent <strong>in</strong>flati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> y/e 2015.<br />

The total number of people directly employed <strong>in</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess format franchis<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>Australia</strong> has c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>ued to <strong>rise</strong> with 472,000 permanent, part-time and casual<br />

employees, up 2.4 percent from 461,000 two years ago.<br />

The number of franchise brands operat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>Australia</strong> has decl<strong>in</strong>ed by 3.5<br />

percent from 1,160 to 1,120. Professor Lorelle Frazer, Director of <strong>the</strong> Centre,<br />

said this gradual reducti<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> franchise systems is expected as <strong>the</strong> sector<br />

c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>ues to mature.<br />

'Franchise brands have c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>ued to merge and c<strong>on</strong>solidate to rema<strong>in</strong><br />

susta<strong>in</strong>able and to grow,' she said. 'Whilst <strong>the</strong> number of brands has decl<strong>in</strong>ed,<br />

<strong>in</strong>dividual franchise systems have grown <strong>in</strong>ternally with modest <strong>in</strong>creases <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

number of franchise units.'<br />

The 2016 survey shows a total of 79,000 units operat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess format<br />

franchises <strong>in</strong> <strong>Australia</strong>. The number of franchised units has slightly <strong>in</strong>creased<br />

and company-owned units decreased (perhaps as companies re-franchise outlets
