fantastic museums and alot of
mining history

We will meet at Mc Donalds at the mainstation at 8:45. We will change trains at
Essen- mainstation, so please stay with the group! If you get lost, we are going to
Essen- Kockerei Zollverein tram 107 from Essen- HBF.
If possible, do not bring large bags as they will have to be put in lockers at the
museum . We have 3 guided tours at this former mine, 2 in English, 1 in German,
starting at 10:30. We will learn how coal was mined and about the hard work of the
miners. After lunch we will go to the Red Dot Design Museum. Please listen for
further information!! Don´t forget to take pictures!!
The Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex is a large former industrial site in the city
of Essen. It has been inscribed into the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites since
December 14, 2001, and is one of the anchor points of the European Route of
Industrial Heritage. The first coal mine on the premises was founded in 1847, mining
activities took place from 1851 until December 23, 1986. For decades, starting in the
late 1950s, the Zollverein Coal Mine ranked among the largest of its kind in Europe
and is an architectur masterpiece, earning it a reputation as the “most beautiful coal
mine in the world”.
We will leave to Mülheim at around 4:00pm. Then we will have to say goodbye;((
