We will meet at Mc Donalds at the ma<strong>in</strong>station at 8:45. We will change tra<strong>in</strong>s at<br />
Essen- ma<strong>in</strong>station, so please stay with the group! If you get lost, we are go<strong>in</strong>g to<br />
Essen- Kockerei Zollvere<strong>in</strong> tram 107 from Essen- HBF.<br />
If possible, do not br<strong>in</strong>g large bags as they will have to be put <strong>in</strong> lockers at the<br />
museum . We have 3 guided tours at this former m<strong>in</strong>e, 2 <strong>in</strong> English, 1 <strong>in</strong> German,<br />
start<strong>in</strong>g at 10:30. We will learn how coal was m<strong>in</strong>ed and about the hard work of the<br />
m<strong>in</strong>ers. After lunch we will go to the Red Dot Design Museum. Please listen for<br />
further <strong>in</strong>formation!! Don´t forget to take pictures!!<br />
The Zollvere<strong>in</strong> Coal M<strong>in</strong>e Industrial Complex is a large former <strong>in</strong>dustrial site <strong>in</strong> the city<br />
of Essen. It has been <strong>in</strong>scribed <strong>in</strong>to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites s<strong>in</strong>ce<br />
December 14, 2001, and is one of the anchor po<strong>in</strong>ts of the European Route of<br />
Industrial Heritage. The first coal m<strong>in</strong>e on the premises was founded <strong>in</strong> 1847, m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
activities took place from 1851 until December 23, 1986. For decades, start<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the<br />
late 1950s, the Zollvere<strong>in</strong> Coal M<strong>in</strong>e ranked among the largest of its k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>in</strong> Europe<br />
and is an architectur masterpiece, earn<strong>in</strong>g it a reputation as the “most beautiful coal<br />
m<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> the world”.<br />
