Heart-Led Leaders
On your best day putting in effort
towards these causes, a day you go
home feeling aCComplished, what did
you do, or get done?
JL: It varies, but those best days always include
some combination of getting things done at
work for the bank and having some sort of
impact with a community organization or
non-profit. And, on those days that I really hit
a home run, I probably got to watch one of
my daughter’s basketball games or one of my
son’s water polo games.
EE: I love the team atmosphere and being part
of the team. It’s satisfying and exciting when
everyone performs in their roles. That’s when
organizations achieve their goals. The best
organizations are diverse in every sense of
the word and leverage the strengths of its
members. Anytime you accomplish that team
success, that’s a good day.
GA: I get a feeling of accomplishment after giving
my time toward the duties of my leadership
roles and fundraising activities. I’ve done
physical work to better the community and
helped others obtain solutions to their needs.
RL: After volunteering at the JUF Uptown
Café, an anti-hunger program for the needy
that provides hot meals in a restaurantstyle
setting, I always leave with a sense
of fulfillment and gratitude. After they’re
finished with their meal, volunteers are
encouraged to sit and engage with the diners.
Sometimes it’s the only conversation these
individuals have all day. To have this kind of
dignified experience is unparalleled to any
volunteering experience I’ve ever had.
TD: Our daily goal is to deliver the best in class
foam to our clients better than anyone else,
and to make the world a better place on a
daily, and HOURLY basis. That is and always
will be me.
ND: I survived and didn’t get sick.
If outreach is an important aspect
of your organization, how do you
encourage others to get involved?
How would you encourage others
to get involved in the Highland Park
community in general?
JL: I often comment that one of the blessings
– and curses – of our community is that
everyone gets a voice – and everyone uses it.
I think it’s great to get involved and be active.
Taking ownership of our community and the
organizations that support our community, as
well as the businesses that choose to operate
here is a gift that we can each participate in at
whatever level feels most comfortable for us.
Everything makes a difference.
rf: People will only get involved if they connect
with the purpose or get something out of
it. Whether it’s inner gratification, a sense
of accomplishment, feeling like you’ve
made a difference, or even material gain.
It’s about finding what motivates someone
and appealing to that part of them. Is it
beautification of their surroundings? Pride in
their community? Networking and meeting
new people? Increasing their business? Find
that and you’ll get them involved.
EE: At the Bank, we ask all of our officers to
be involved in a community organization.
It’s an easy ask, they all want to contribute.
Community organizations are a great
opportunity for people to feel valued
and provide real substance, and I believe
its instinctual for people to want to feel
valued. For any organization to succeed,
I think people involved need to feel a true
connection. Find the organization that fits
and jump in.
ND: We encourage past participants to come
back as volunteers and judges. It’s so great
to see a musician who competed when
they were 14 come back as a judge in their
20s! That means the world to me. I am also
constantly bragging about Highland Park and
trying to cross promote other companies and
festivals. I do this on Facebook, at our shows,
and just in everyday conversation with folks.
GA: I always try to encourage others (clients,
students, friends and relatives) to get
involved in any way possible, whether it’s
at the local schools, community events, city
departments, clinics, youth organizations, for
a short term project or longer.
RL: We encourage others to get involved by
attending different events and learning about
what each organization does to give back
to the community. Most of our outreach is
through mailings, emails and ultimately wordof-mouth.
Based on your commitment level
and what you’re passion about specifically,
there are a number of ways to get involved.
Contacting the Outreach Coordinator at the
respective organization is a great first step.
BL: There are numerous events, volunteer
opportunities and speakers throughout the
year that appeal to all ages. I feel that there
is a way for anyone to get involved and find
an area that they are particularly passionate.
Through Idlewood, I have sat on the Retail
and Trades Dinner Committee in past years.
TD: Find your tribe. If type one diabetes affects
you, join the amazing people at Friends
United. If affordable housing is an issue you
face, get involved with Community Partners
for Affordable Housing. If you want to help
kids who drop out of high school and become
young parents but aspire to become positive
members of our community, help Curt’s Cafe
get funded and running here in HP. Get your
favorite group of adults together on random
Friday and Saturday nights and play Cards
Against Humanity. Just get together with
people.
