Age Restrictions
pumped up and getting ready
There is a lot of excitement and buzz, taking place in the junior
tennis community right now. What is fuelling this enthusiasm is
the ‘successful‘ crossing over of so many junior tennis players
into the professional arena.
That’s Intense!
That’s Passion!
That’s ANA!
to show a little of my history
here in Brazil!! I loved!!
Lesson from Roger!
Success means different thing to different people... so if it is
just being able to rally and win points against world class pro
players, or taking a set off these players, or winning a match
against these players, or going two rounds deep into one of
@luizaeidelvein
Good brasilian tennis player!!!
@costadeltennis
Outstanding work guys! Lol
#proud
these tournaments, these junior tennis players are pumped up
and getting ready for the time and opportunity when they can
take that next step.
This in part has a lot to do with organizations like Ten-Pro
and Tennis Europe Junior Tour and others who has formatted
Clive
Juniors Only
junior tennis tournaments to a level of competitive excellence.
In this way the competition is just as intense as watching a pro
tournament.
Great article, but sometimes
that’s the only resource we
have available.
Junior tennis players across the globe can now see a reason
for all the hard hours of practicing they do, and now they are
pushing to get even better... and they are certainly getting better
faster, than ever before. Watch out world, they are coming!!!
So correct. Some of those refs
are clueless.
It’s All About The Money!
8 Serveitup April 2018
Just To Keep The Money. When
the rain is intermittent and washes
out playing time, tournament director
sometimes changes the format, so all is
not lost. But in some cases, it is not fair
for parents who pay an exhorbatant entry
fee, and travels a long way, for their
child to end up playing sometimes two
out of three tie breakers just so that the
organizers can keep the entry fee. Cancelling
or postponing the tournament
would be much better.
Unprepared Running a tournament
does not mean just having the facility
to host it. It also means having sufficient
staff and personnel to service the event.
This is also true for the equipment. It is
very frustrating to see that after a rain
delay, a facility that has around eight
courts, one person is out there with a
squeegee drying a court. If you offer
to help, you realize that that’s the only
squeegee available. In order to get
matches going again, it’s normally the
players and their parents who pitch in
with towels and brooms, to save the
day. This is taking people for granted,
and being disrespectful,
Helpful Heroes Thanks to all those
helpful heroes who come in and save
the day, even though you go unrewarded
for your regular acts of kindness.

Tennis Talk
Talented &
Stubborn!
being stubborn can ruin you!
If you have been
playing competitive
tennis for a number
you are, who are playing
up and you think
no one understands
you. If you are 14-16
and consistently losing
to 10 year olds,
of years, and you’re
your strokes and you’ll
you need some seri-
not really winning
figure it out, it’s time
ous help, and it starts
matches against op-
to take a good look
with being willing to
ponents in your age
at yourself and what’s
totally listen and fol-
division, and has now
happening.
Being
low everything that a
moved up because of
very talented and not
qualified coach is in-
your age, and you are
listening to anyone
structing you with. If
now losing to players
because you’re stub-
you settle for anything
10 Serveitup April 2018
much younger than
born, that can ruin
less, it is useless.

Junior tennis players have
this habit of saying they can
beat their opponent after
they have just lost to them.
They say things like “they just
hit some lucky shots“ and
“they cheated“ and they
for their loss.
If you had an opportunity to
redo the match, what would
you do differently that would
Answer
T
H
E
come up with lots of reasons
ensure that you will win the
match? This is a very important
question that every player
should ask themself.
If they cannot give a decisive
and convincing answer, then
they should honestly admit
Question
that they need to work more
on honing their skills to become
a better player. You can’t
beat an opponent, by simply
saying you can.
Shorten your swing
on return of serve
Because of the equipment players
are using today, it’s now
possible for servers to rip both the
first and second serve very easily.
When you add the placement
to those big serves, returning the
serve can be a very challenging.
But using the correct technique
to return the serve, can instantly
put your opponent on the defensive.
It starts with a quick rotation
of the shoulder and a short
backswing to absorb the pace of
the ball and punch / push through
it. Also don’t wait for the ball to
come to you, instead step into
the shot, so you get all your bodyweight
moving forward.
Going for a longer backswing
will more than likely cause you
to hit the ball late, which in turn
causes you to shank the shot because
you are unable to control it.
This is because the ball got to you
quicker than you were able to get
your contact point out front.
14
Serveitup May 2018 Serveitup May 2018 15

Every player normally fights and
give their best at the start of any
match, to win the first set. After they
win the first set, they exhale and relax
to begin the second set. That
momentary relaxation can become
very costly, and can determine the
second set, and sometimes the
match.
During the first set when you are
fighting to win that set, there is
no relaxation, and the mind stays
focused on the task that needs to
be accomplished. In that mindset,
you are zoned in and you do get
the job done.
What players need to do, is not
to focus on the single set, but
play the match as a continuous set,
of twelve games. After you win the
first set, don’t relax to start a second
set, your mind will trick you, and you
will think since you already won the
first set, it’s going to be easier to
win the match.
What happens is if your opponent
loses the first set, they
are now fighting harder to win the
second set, while you are in a state
of relaxation. So you lose the second
set, and it’s an uphill battle to
win the match. So play the entire
match as if it is one long set, and
not three sets.
The reason you lose the
2nd set
After you’ve won the
1st set
Date of birth 09/12/2002 Wollongong, Sydney Australia.
Serveitup May 2018 Serveitup May 2018 19

My story
My name is Anthony Krajnovic. I was
born on December 9 2002. I have
loved sport since I was a kid.
When I was little, my family all played
soccer for their local club Balgownie
Magpies and my parents encouraged
me to play sport and to find a
sport I liked.
I played all sorts of sport, but I always
had athing for tennis. When
I was 5 years old that’s all I wanted
to do... so I dropped all the other
sports at age 8 and played tennis
alone. I was motivated by the players
and the emotion and the feeling
of winning, and I was very inspired
by Roger Federer.
I started playing at a club in Corrimal
called the Leading Edge Tennis
Academy, when I hit my first ball it
felt so natural it felt as if I had done
it before. I can remember thinking
to myself I think I have finally found
something I enjoy and love.
When I was 8, I moved to academy’s
head club at West Wollongong
Facebook: anthony.krajnovic
Instagram: anthony.krajnovic
(Wiseman Park Tennis Club), and started
playing competitive tennis doing
round robin tournaments at my club
and other local clubs.
When i was 12/13 I then started playing
tennis Australia ranking tournaments.
With playing those I have been traveling
to places playing tournaments trying
to become better and better.
This year with the success I was having
I got asked to enter a state championships
tournament to represent Wollongong.
I said yes to the offer and put my
name down. I ended up winning the
tournament and got asked if I would
like to go and play representing Australia
in New Zealand, playing the Pepsi
Junior International Tournament and
some other tournaments,
I am spending 2018 doing extra hours
of playing and training and crossfit, doing
tournaments all over NSW, and trying
to expand further and play all over
Australia. I have started training at a
number of different clubs and getting
professional advice and help, for when
I go to New Zealand. I’m using this advice
for the future and hopefully either
playing on the Australian pro tour, or
atp or being a professional coach.
Always Step Into
Overheads
This will ensure that you hit up to the ball, and your bodyweight transfers into the court.

Healthy Tips
Rest your Feet
In-between Matches
After you’ve won a match, don’t let
your feet carry around the weight of
your shoe and wet sweaty socks until
the time of your next match.
Take your sneakers and your socks off,
and let your feet breathe and relax in
an open toe sandals, until it’s time for
you to get back on the court. This also
conserves your energy level.
Sometimes you may have to wait for
an hour and a half and sometimes
even more depending on a rain delay.
Do what’s best for your feet, show
them some love... they carry your
bodyweight around.
d. Tracking. Your brain does a lot to take that blurred object
the ball, tracing its speed and trajectory even when you aren’t
looking perfectly at it. In fact, when you try to hard to ‘keep your
eye on the ball’, you are likely to lose sight of it. Especially when
volleying. Love tracking the blur!
True. From the time the ball leaves your opponent’s racquet it
starts slowing down. It slows down about 25% before it bounces,
about 20% from the bounce, and about another 20% from
the bounce into your strings. Relax, there is plenty of time to see
the ball. If there isn’t, then you are losing pretty bad. Get better!
a. When you scan the other side of the net, looking for the ball
in your opponent’s racket, then your brain collects information
on its flight and you start moving more quickly to their ball. Tennis
just got easier for you.
