Dear Junior Tennis Players,
Becoming a better tennis player is never going to be
an easy task. It is going to come down to you, really
wanting it badly, and then prepared to go out there
with the mindset to literally outwork everyone.
Even if your coach showed you the shots, and demonstrated
it to you repeatedly, or even if you watch
hours of videos, you’re still going to have to go out
there, and put in the physical work, repetitiously.
It’s going to take you working on it over, and over
and over again, and that’s going to take some time,
real time: and there are no shortcuts. You may look
bad, and struggle at times, but the payoff is worth all
the frustration. Just know that some strokes you’ll
master faster than others, and normally the strokes
you struggle with the most, becomes your weapons.
If you can’t get to the ball, then you
can’t hit the ball, period. It doesn’t
matter how well you started, or that
you won the first set, or how much better
your strokes are, than your opponent.
If you don’t have the endurance
to finish the match, it doesn’t matter,
you’re gonna lose.
why are you hittin
deep balls
12 Serveitup September 2021

The vast majority of players (pros, college,
juniors) all look alike. They all stand
back behind the baseline, and rip the
ball.
And where does it go, to their opponent
on the other baseline. All these players
are very good at moving laterally: but
the moment they have to run forward
into the court, they mess up the shots.
So why are you hitting the balls deep
to your opponents continually. The objective
of the game is for you to win the
points, in order to win the game; not to
hit the ball back to the opponent.
There is a fore court, and there are sides
g
of the court, use them. Hitting balls deep
are basically good, for return of serves.
Otherwise, you’re basically sending the
balls back to your opponent, so they can
try to win the points, instead of you.
points on
covery
Right after they finish their serves and
are falling away “off“ their serves, is
where most juniors lose their points.
It’s because they’re off-balanced, and
their feet is not prepared for the ball
that’s coming back from the returner.
Even if they get it back, they still lose
the point, because they end up rushed
and out of position.
The surest way to ruin your confidence,
is to play tournaments when
you know you’re not ready. So if you
know you’re struggling with things
in your practice sessions, wait until
your strokes are more manageable
before you play. Cause It will only
ruin your confidence, and push your
development further back.
stance
the better swing
Open stance, is a better swing when you
are looking for placement, balance and
disguise. Hitting your forehand close
stance limits your stroke tremendously.
This is especially true, for balls that are
coming diagonally across your body.
It restricts the hips from squaring back
parallel to the net.
Tennis Talk
I started playing tennis at the age of 4 in
my hometown at the time Florence,Kentucky.
My parents decided to put me in
tennis because they went to the US Open
and thought it would be cool if one of
their kids played tennis.
As time went on I grew an interest in the
sport and wanted to go places with it. My
parents saw that I had an interest in the
sport and that I had the ability to make it
far.
For that reason they decided to get me
better training, and we moved to Dallas,
Texas when I was 9. I played for a year or
so just for fun without that real drive and
passion I needed to get to my dreams.
When I was 11 that was when I really said
to myself that I wanted to play professionally
and to do that I needed to commit to
the sport. I started doing school online
and playing tennis full time.
My game improved tremendously in that
year and I was gaining a lot of confidence
in myself. Shortly after a year of online
school I injured my knee pretty badly and
couldn’t even walk.
I had tendinitis in both knees and I got a
cyst in the back of my right knee preventing
me from bending it. It was a very long
road to recovery that included physical
therapy, stretching, taped up knees and
more.
I was finally able to go back to practice after
resting for 2 months, but I could only
do drop hitting and serve. It was really
hard on me mentally because the process
of recovery was really slow.
Eventually I was able to start running and
slowly built my game back up better than
before. I started to play tournaments but
the pain in my knee was always there and
hindered me a lot.
Serveitup September 2021 25

Tennis Talk
As I started to reach a new high in my
game Covid hit and we were forced to
quarantine until May.
In that time I tried to do as much hitting
on a backboard as I could as well as my
own fitness. When we came back again it
felt like I had to start all over again but it
benefited me in the end.
I continued my journey until in September
we started to plan a move to Florida
but right before that in October I hurt my
knee again.
Another month of rest and I was back at it
and we went to Florida for the month of
November where I grew a lot as a tennis
player.
When I came back to Dallas I decided I
wanted to go back there and continue
building my game with another group of
coaches.
The hardest part was leaving my friends
and family behind as only my dad and
I made the move. I was there for three
months but again my knee pain came
back in May and I took a whole month off.
I came back from that injury with a new
focus and drive and began improving a
lot in short periods of time.
As I started to play ITFs I met coach Wesley
and began working with him. This is
Just like every company bringing a
product to market, they run tests
repeatedly on the individual parts
until it’s successful. Tennis players
should do the same in practice.
They should take a stroke or a return
or serve or a pattern, and work on it
over and over again, until success.
FREEDOM
to make
MISTAKES
Players get so afraid in practice
to make mistakes, because a parent
or coach, keeps yelling “keep
the ball in the court“ That’s the last
thing players need to hear. Practice
should be the one place where you
have all the freedom to go for any
shots, and make the mistakes, and
right there, work on learning how
to do it correctly.
At the end of every practice session,
you need to have an overall
assessment of your performance.
You need to do a self assessment,
and also have your coach give you
his take. This will help to determine
whether you are being productive
or unproductive, in your practices.
