opprairie.com Life & Arts the orland park prairie | April 19, 2018 | 21 Earth Day celebration to fight pear infestation Submitted by Orland Grassland Volunteers From 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, April 21, the Orland Grassland Volunteers are to lead a fight against callery pear, pyrus calleryana, an exotic tree from China and Vietnam. Bradford pear is another common cultivar. Meet up is at the site’s parking lot on 167th Street, just west of LaGrange Road. They are looking for help in reducing this infestation by asking people to join them on the Earth Day celebration in lopping and tossing saplings, while herbiciders follow behind and dab the 1-inch and smaller stumps. The Orland Grassland Volunteers have been working on this slope since March, but much more is needed here. They found that lopping, herbiciding and fire are a necessary combination to stop the plant dead in its tracks. This is a slow process, but it is to clear necessary acres to protect important spaces for the birds and encroachment into the remnants. As the season progresses and the trees leaf out, contractor help will come in with a more large-scale approach by foliar spraying. Another large group effort is to be held from 9 a.m.-noon May 26th from 9:00 to 12:00 through a collaboration with the Forest Preserves of Cook County, Audubon Great Lakes and the Volunteers. Guided bird walks also are planned ahead of these workdays. On Earth Day, April 21, the bird walk is from 7-9 a.m. On May 26, the bird walk is from 8-9 a.m. Volunteering is best suited for those 8 years old and older. Participants should be prepared to hike in natural terrain and dressed for the weather in sturdy clothes and shoes. Orland Park Theatre Troupe to present ‘Pirates of Penzance’ April 27-29 Submitted by Village of Orland Park A rowdy cast of pirates, Keystone Cops and young maidens is about to set sail, as Village of Orland Park Theatre Troupe gears up to present its spring production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic opera, “Pirates of Penzance.” The 36-member cast is to bring the 19th century maritime tale to life at 7 p.m. Friday, April 27, and Saturday, April 28, as well as 2 p.m. Sunday, April 29, at 2 p.m. the Sandburg High School Performing Arts Center, 13300 S. LaGrange Road in Orland Park. Orland Park Theatre Troupe’s production showcases performers from 13 towns, and includes Orland Park’s Dan Nevinger as Sergeant, Dean Erickson as Pirate Samuel, Sarah Callis as Edith, Jessica Winston as Kate and Nicolette Mutnansky as Isabel. “Pirates of Penzance” is produced and directed by Frann Carnivele, with the help of Assistant Director Bryan Riess, of Orland Park, Musical Director Michael Barr-Schinzel, and Choreographer Zoe Martinkus, of Orland Park. The full cast includes Orland Park’s Kennedy Boshardt, Annabella Cannici, Brady Dahl, Paige Doman, Patricia Domico, Rebecca Erickson, Christina Cucci Fischer, David Ford, Bill Kubiak, Zoe Martinkus, Gianna Nardella, Bryan Reiss, Ilana St. Clair and William Vajarsky. The show is two hours and features a 20-minute intermission. Reserved seating tickets are on sale now, in-person only, at the Village’s Recreation Administration Office, 14600 Ravinia Ave. Tickets are $18 for adults; $16 for seniors and students, and $14 for children younger than 12 years old.
