Linwood College has a clear focus – to
meet the individual needs of every learner
in a safe, caring environment. Linwood
learners develop core attributes that will
ensure their success throughout life. They
are positive, resilient
learners who are collaborative
and communicate
effectively. Linwood
learners are critical thinkers
and creative problem
solvers. They have the
strong foundation of
knowledge, skills and
attributes required for
personalised excellence
and for future success in
a world in which technological
change and its attendant social
impacts are the norm.
Most importantly, Linwood learners discover
and realise their academic passions
and achieve individual excellence for
personalised learning and career pathways.
We employ the best teachers who see
themselves too as life-long learners. Our
teachers utilise the full range of teaching
and learning strategies to individualise
learning and ensure personalised success.
We have a diverse, vibrant, globally-rich
culture that creates a stable, connected
learning and social environment and contributes
to a richness which reflects New
Zealand’s current identity and prepares
our learners to be active global citizens.
Community connections are integral to
our school. Linwood College is secondary
school for both the Tamai
– Linwood-Woolston –
and Aupaki – the Bays –
Kāhui Ako-Communities
of Learning. These Kāhui
Ako ensure a seamless
learning pathway from
early childhood centres,
schools and beyond to
our tertiary and career
partners.
We are excited by the
immediate prospect of a brand new learning
community. Our school is to be totally
rebuilt. We will have a purpose-built,
future-proofed learning environment, with
educational and sporting facilities to rival
any secondary school in the country.
Symbolically this marks a new era for
Linwood College. I can think of no better
way to outwardly signal our energy, enthusiasm
and optimism.
Mairehau High School
Mairehau High School Year 13 Building
and Construction students have an exciting
new project this year that will enable them
to gain real life skills, while also giving back
to the school community. Their brief is to
design, plan and build a large decking behind
the existing whare. The standards these
students are assessed in are ITO (Industry
Training Organisation) standards written
by industry, for industry; in this case the
BCITO (Building and Construction ITO).
Up to 40 Level 3 credits are at stake and can
be achieved whilst completing the project.
Mairehau High School has seen a significant
increase in roll in 2018, highlighting the
need for the creation of more shared spaces
around the school. This new outdoor space
will enhance the function of the school’s
whare and will have the advantage of the
school being able to invite the wider community
for school and social gatherings. It
will be attached to the existing whare kitchen,
allowing the school and others to serve
food when the occasion allows. A special
feature is of the decking is its unusual shape
in the form of a native design to enhance the
look even further.
Head of Technology Axel Willmer is
delighted with the enthusiasm his students
have shown for the project. “The class has
been really engaged in this initiative from
the start. They are all enjoying the opportunity
for hands-on learning and are proud
to be part of creating an asset that will be
enjoyed by so many. It’s always great to see
young adults genuinely loving what they’re
doing.”
