GIANTS IN THE BIBLE
PROF. M. M. NINAN
CHAPTER TWO
WHO ARE THE "SONS OF GOD"?
ANGELS
First interpretation
that the ‘sons of God’ were
Angelic beings
who rebelled against God and fell from grace.
Fallen angels
According to this theory some of the angels looked down to the earth and was attracted to the beauty
of the daughters of men.
So they left their heavenly abode and took flesh somehow and married
them and had children. These children had giant proportions for some reason. And these were the
Nephilim.
A number of early sources refer to the phrase "bene Elohim" which translated verbatim as"sons of
Elohim" as Angels. The earliest such references are found in the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Greek,
Aramaic Enochic literatures, in certain Ge'ez manuscripts of 1 Enoch and Jubilees. The earliest
statement in support of this can be traced to the rabbinical Targum Pseudo-Jonathan
Some Christian
apologists, such as Tertullian and especially Lactantius, shared this opinion. So this may have been
the choice of the early scholars.
The New American Bible commentary suggests that the Epistle of Jude refers nephilim as "heavenly
beings"
(Jud 1:6)
who came to earth and married women and had children though this is not explicit there.
And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath
reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.
