KINGSTON NEEDS FOUR STRAIGHT WINS TO KEEP THEIR SEASON ALIVE
The Kingston Frontenacs find themselves
in the deepest hole a team can be in
during an OHL playoff run. Coming into
tonight’s game they trail the Hamilton
Bulldogs 3-0 in the best of seven Eastern
Conference Championship series. There
is no doubt that the odds are stacked
against Kingston, but they don’t have to
look far to know that coming back from
3-0 is possible. During the 2014 OHL
playoffs, Kingston held a 3-0 series lead
over Peterborough before eventually losing
game seven 2-1 in overtime.
The Frontenacs had a much better effort
in game three than the two showings
they had in Hamilton. They were much
more physical and increased their puck
possession time. For the first time in the
series Kingston tested Kaden Fulcher with
a few quality scoring chances. Jeremy
Helvig was exceptional in net for Kingston
giving up just two goals on 30 shots. The
power play needs to produce more for
Kingston to see wins. The top ranked
power play in the regular season has
produced just one goal in this series with
the man advantage. The Frontenacs were
much better in the faceoff circle in game
three earning nearly a 50/50 split on draws
but that number still needs to improve,
especially in the offensive zone.
Hamilton continues to show that they are
a deep team. They have no issue with
rolling their top three lines comfortably.
Their transition game is solid, and it starts
with their defensemen making a strong
first pass out of the zone. Kingston needs
to find a way to combat the strength of
the Bulldogs forwards. More often than
not Hamilton is winning puck battles and
net front battles. They are also getting
scoring contributions from the blue line.
Ben Gleason and Riley Stillman have both
scored goals in the series.
Each team has a reason to feel confident
with the situation. The Hamilton Bulldogs
lost four straight games just once this
season, and that came well before the
trade deadline when their final roster was
set. Kingston has won four straight in each
of their first two playoff series to advance
to the conference finals. If they want their
season to continue and to play for an OHL
title, they will have to make it three straight
series with four straight wins. - KF

DON’T STOP BELIEVING
The Frontenacs have a tough road ahead of them. Losing the first three games of the
series is not the way the coaching staff drew up the start to this series, but that is the
hand that has been dealt. If Kingston has any hope of erasing the deficit, they first need
to believe they can do it. Nobody could blame them for having negative thoughts now
that they have to win four straight against the top seed from the Eastern Conference,
but the players need to push those negative thoughts aside. The fact that they have won
four straight twice already in the playoffs should be the focus point. They know they
have done it before, they just need to believe they can do it again.
NET FRONT PRESENCE
Getting traffic in front of the Hamilton net will help disrupt what has been a solid playoff
performance by Kaden Fulcher so far. With a good-sized group up front, Kingston can
win position battles in front of the Hamilton net that will make life more difficult for
Fulcher. With bodies in front, it becomes difficult for goalies to find the puck through
traffic. It also allows for plenty of opportunities to tip point shots or find loose rebounds
that can lead to goals. At this point in the playoffs there aren’t many pretty goals being
scored. It’s all about winning battles and scoring ugly goals in front of the net.
BE PHYSICAL IN ALL ZONES
In the last series against Barrie, Kingston used their size and physicality to wear down
the Colts. With Max Jones returning to the lineup, it gave Kingston an added boost
of size and another forward who is more than willing to throw his weight around on
opposing players. Ted Nichol, Tyler Burnie and Ryan Cranford can all be thrown into
that category. On the back-end Jacob Paquette and Eemeli Rasanen can punish
forwards who are willing to chase pucks into the corner. Over a long series finishing
hits can wear a team down and slow them up by a half step. It can also force players to
look over their shoulders in a race for the puck. That can lead to a turnover or winning
a puck battle that may not have come in the early parts of the series and could be the
difference in games, especially as the series moves along. - KF

THE ROAD TO THE EASTERN
CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP

Ted Nichol scored the go-ahead goal late in
the second period of game six that would
end up being the series clincher for Kingston.
They defeated the Barrie Clots 4-2 in the best
of seven series to earn a spot in the Eastern
Conference Finals for the first time since 1993.
The Hamilton Bulldogs took care of the Niagara
IceDogs 4-1 to set up a match-up between the
two division rivals for the Bobby Orr Trophy.
For the second consecutive series Kingston
dropped the opener, this time on the road. They
would also lose game 2 in Barrie before getting
on a roll to win four consecutive games and win
the series. Gabe Vilardi recorded three straight
multi goal games in games three through five to
help push the Frontenacs to a series win. After
a shaky game one, Jeremy Helvig returned to
his dominant form allowing two goals or less in
all four Kingston victories. The Burnie – Nichol
– Cranford line was handed the task of shutting
down the top line of the Colts which was made
up of three 40-goal scorers and they did a
remarkable job allowing just one 5 on 5 goal in
Kingston’s four wins.
The Hamilton Bulldogs first defeated the
Ottawa 67’s and then the Niagara IceDogs
by the same 4 games to 1 result in their
opening two rounds. Much like Kingston, one
of Hamilton’s trade deadline acquisitions has
been leading the way in the playoffs. Robert
Thomas, who was acquired from the London
Knights, leads the Bulldogs with 15 points in
just 10 games. Kaden Fulcher leads the OHL in
GAA at 2.51 in the playoffs. Justin Lemcke is a
big defender that won’t add much on the score
sheet, but will play major minutes for his team
in key situations.
The two teams could not be more evenly
matched. Hamilton won 4 of 6 regular season
match-ups with four games going into overtime.
The Bulldogs carry 9 players drafted by NHL
teams while Kingston has an impressive 8 on
their roster. Just last season Kingston defeated
the Bulldogs in overtime of game 7 of the
opening round of the 2017 OHL Playoffs when
Linus Nyman scored the series winning goal.
With so much in common this year, it would not
be surprising to see this series go the distance
for a second year in a row. - KF
