Glenbrook students
raise $10k at annual
burger-eating contest
It all started as a prank.
Fifteen years ago, a
group of Glenbrook South
and Glenbrook North students
raided the McDonald’s
at Glenview’s Plaza
del Prado in an attempt to
buy every burger the staff
could make. Nowadays,
the tables have turned.
On Saturday, April 22,
12 competitors from GBS
and GBN were put to the
test, stretching their stomachs
to devour a combined
122 hamburgers in
30 minutes at the 15th annual
Burger Day.
“It’s not every day you
get to see a group of students
do something like
this,” said Jack Joselit,
GBN Burger Day board
member. “I know my
friends are all going to
come out and support us
doing this. As teenagers
and students, we are not
always given respect, and
when we can put something
on and make a difference
for our community
for a good cause, it’s
impressive and I’m proud
of what we’ve done.”
The competitors ate one
burger after another to
cheers from friends and
family. The rules were
simple: eat as many burgers
as possible in the allotted
time without throwing
them back up.
Although GBN won
a trophy and bragging
rights at the competition,
the event’s ultimate
reward was the money
raised for the Ronald
McDonald House of Chicagoland
and Northwest
Indiana, which provides a
nearby place for families
to stay while their children
receive treatment in
hospitals across the area.
“We call it a competition,
but really we are all
here for the same charity
and it’s just a really special
thing that you don’t get
between the two schools
ever,” said GBS student
Gracie Hambourger, the
event’s first solo female
president. “As much as it
is an eating competition,
it’s just a chance to be together
for a day.”
For the competitors, it
was also an opportunity
to take part in a long-lived
legacy in the North Shore
community. GBS eater
Zach Lehman stated the
experience was “the cherry
on top” of his senior
year. Lehman prepared for
the competition by going
without food for 15 hours
after a water polo tournament
to rev up his hunger.
GBN seniors Luke Frishman
and Adam Rabin
have been looking forward
to participating in
the event since they heard
about it as younger students.
“It’s something [we’ve]
always wanted to do and
[we] are really excited
for it, but once it gets to
today, you start to realize
the actual challenge you
have to do, instead of just
[thinking], “Oh, I get to
eat as many cheeseburgers
as I want,” Frishman said.
This year, the Spartans
proved they had the ultimate
hunger for success,
winning the competition
after devouring a total of
62 burgers. The Titans
scarfed down a combined
60 burgers.
Thanks to the seven
months of planning and
fundraising from the
Burger Day student board,
as well as burger and water
donations and fundraising
guidance from the
McDonald’s store owner
Chris Prucnal, the event
raised more than $10,000
for the charity.
“It’s remarkable that
you have a group of high
school kids that have put
so much passion to help
other kids and who have
so much dedication to
put on an event like this
for Ronald McDonald
House,” Prucnal said.
“The kids get all of the
credit. I try to give them
guidance and point them
in the right path, but it’s
really all about them. The
efforts are theirs.”
