Silence. Imagine the world on mute, where the slightest sound might result in spilled blood. “A Quiet Place” clocks in at a taut 91 minutes — a tightly wound, suspenseful thriller in which the very emptiness of noise only serves to highlight the few instances when the slightest peep comes through as cacophony. Directed by John Krasinski, who also co-wrote the script along with portraying the bearded patriarch of a family struggling to survive, the movie is a well-made breathless clutcher from start to finish. Set in the near future under the grip of creatures who have turned the world into a dystopian shell, the family is introduced when searching through a barren store for medicine to treat their ill son, played by Noah Jupe. It becomes clear that everyone is going out of their way to avoid making noise of any kind, from their small child attempting to reach a toy on a high shelf to the mother picking her way through rattling pills in plastic bottles. The reason for the current circumstances is alluded to via newspaper clippings, showing that giant creatures have appeared (aliens? evolution?) and “A Quiet Place” hit theaters on April 6. Photo Submitted are decimating every living creature in the vicinity. Hunting aurally, the toothy beings have torn through the land like tissue paper, forcing the remaining survivors to live their lives in utter silence or risk evisceration. The film is not exceptionally bloody or violent, relying instead on good, old-fashioned storytelling and superb acting to portray the tension. Jump scares abound but are not utilized as cliches when anxiety mounts, simply adding to the already overwrought strain of frayed nerves. Emily Blunt plays the mother, remarkably cool under fire as her character navigates this new world as a fierce protector of her children while pregnant with another on the way. The logistics of handling childbirth and a newborn under normal circumstances are terrifying enough, let alone doing so when any breath of sound will bring destruction. And just think about going through labor in absolute silence. Millicent Simmonds, the young actress playing the couple’s deaf daughter who happens to be hearing-impaired in real life, is pivotal in many scenes and expresses herself so clearly despite never making a sound. Krasinski deftly weaves the relationships of the characters together and the audience is fully invested in their survival from the start. Small details make the difference here, such as a camera shot of a loose nail spiking up from the floor, or the crinkling bags of crunchy potato chips left on store shelves. In fact, filmgoers themselves have been cautious about making noise ingesting their own snacks in a dead-quiet theater. The modern world is full of clamor, and it’s difficult to imagine life in monastic silence; but considering this alternative, the inhabitants adapt by using cloth plates in place of clinking china and crocheted board game pieces. Absent is the usual bombastic music score, which only serves to highlight the hurricane of movement when it comes, or to draw out the tension near to snapping with the only sounds being ragged gasps of air or furiously beating hearts. Without the usual instrumental cues, the imagination of the viewer is what ratchets up the scare level, and the movie is probably more effective for it.
