FORMATION in BRARI SECTION, ALBANIA

Brari is located in Tirana Depression, which is situated in the north-eastern side of Periadriatic
Depression. The Brari section belongs to inner-outer and outer neritic zones. Marine sediments of
Brari section consist of basal sandy conglomerate beds with concretions, yellowish calcareous
sandstones, cross bedded conglomerates and very thin layers of silty mudstones, parallel bed
gravelites, massive fossiliferous sandstones with bivalves. Upward the section continues with
Lithothamnium limestones. terrigenous succession and again Lithothamnium limestones. XRD and
SEM analyses indicate that quartz, calcite, dolomite, mica, feldspars minerals are dominant in this
study area. Those are extremely weathered. The presence of chlorite, smectite was carried out by
the XRD analyses, after several treatments of the samples.

1- INTRODUCTION and OBJECTIVES.
Brari is located in the south-eastern part of
Tirana Depression. Brari section was
measured and sampled in 1999, during a field
trip, by the members of a project ( Meço,

Durmishi, Gjani, Kleinholter). Aquitanian,
Langhian, Serravallian, Tortonian successions
are determined into this section (Fig.1). The
Serravallian- Tortonian deposits show marine
conditions.
