If you have a food allergy you know you need to be
extremely careful about what you eat. Food labelling
is very important to prevent potentially serious
consequences from eating food you could be
allergic to.
The Food Information Regulations 2014 identified
the 14 main allergens. If you buy prepacked food, all
14 allergens have to be highlighted in bold on the
ingredients label, if present. For home delivery food
and takeaways, the allergen information should be
published on the company website, or ask when you
place your order.
When buying food at a restaurant or takeaway, ask the
server for their allergen information, or tell a member
of staff what your allergens are so they can enquire.
Keep yourself safe
- Recipes and ingredients can change – something
you have eaten before may now contain allergens.
- Keep up-to-date with food recalls due to allergen
issues by subscribing to Food Standards Agency alert
(food.gov.uk/safereating/ allergyintol/alerts).
- Make sure people know where you keep your
medication and how to administer it in case of an
emergency.
- Download the Food Standards Agency Allergy –
Chef Card, complete your details and hand it to the
waiter/ chef when you place your order. to inform
