Wednesday May 2 2018 News Roading money in demand •From page 1 Banks Peninsula board chairwoman Pam Richardson and the public gallery laughed at the remark. But Mayor Lianne Dalziel wasn’t impressed, ruling it out of order. “I know what you’re trying to say, it just really was a very bad way to try and say it,” she said. Among the extra funding sought by the board is a doubling of the budget for metal road maintenance. In its submission the board requested an increase from $775,696 to at least $1.4 million. Just over half the peninsula’s 651km roading network is unsealed. It said the money is needed to reduce a backlog of deferred maintenance stretching back years. “There is definitely not enough for the increases in demand over these Rex Gebbie roads. While the traffic volumes are relatively small, the rapid change in usage, particularly by heavy vehicles for forestry or dairy, has a huge and sudden negative impact on both the condition and the life of the road,” the submission said. Scouring, potholes and corrugations were the result. Banks Peninsula Transport manager Rex Gebbie and fifth-generation Little Akaloa farmer Andrew TRUCKS: Increasing demand from forestry and dairy trucks is putting Banks Peninsula roads under strain. Craw have recently criticised the city council over what they say is insufficient road maintenance. The board also wants to see an increase in funding for culvert renewal from $145,139 to $250,000. Also in the board’s submission were requests to add two new projects into the LTP. The first is the $2.6 million Okains Bay Potable Water Scheme, to establish a safe water source for the community and campground. The second is for $1.2 million of funding to implement village plans in Diamond Harbour and Little River. Wainui’s deferred wastewater scheme also comes in for scrutiny. “As many properties in Wainui have septic tank systems which are failing, if this is left unaddressed untreated sewage will continue contaminating the harbour and other waterways,” the board said in its submission. The board has asked that the $8.2 million scheme be reinstated in the LTP. “It’s vital that we get the (waste)water out of the harbour and onto land. What’s the use of taking the Akaroa wastewater out if we’re going to have it going in on the Wainui side?” board chairwoman Pam Richardson asked the city council on Monday. It also proposed, as an alternative to reinstatement, that funding be allocated for a feasibility study of alternative wastewater systems for small, rural communities like Wainui and Little River. Funding for the Akaroa and Diamond Harbour wharf renewals should also be brought forward, the board said. It argues that many of the projects within Banks Peninsula are of regional significance and should be considered in that context when LTP funding was considered. •HAVE YOUR SAY: What do you think of Aaron Keown’s comments?
