EASTWOOD COMMUNITY NEWS
Shops of Eastwood past
How many more Korean BBQ or Roast Duck Shops
does Eastwood need? That’s a common comment I encounter
managing my Facebook page Humans of Eastwood.
Conversely, I’m often struck by the continued nostalgia
for shops of Eastwood’s past. Whether it’s McDonald’s,
Red Rooster of Eastwood, or First and Last Milk Bar, locals
terribly miss these businesses which carried our fond
memories of childhood birthday parties, first dates and
other formative events in our lives.
Which begs the question. If these shops were so popular,
why did they go out of business at all? As a former
Ryde councillor I can dispel the myth that Council
somehow zones land for Korean BBQ only. Nor is there
some Chinese conspiracy to replace fried chicken with
chicken feet.
The reality is most of our favourite local shops of the
past simply struggled and fell out of changing customer
taste and demographics over time. If only we can have a
heritage order to preserve these shops forever, but that’s
just not how the free market economy works.
Fortunately, there are also examples of other local businesses
that have stood the test of time. The Eastwood
Hotel has continued to serve as the local watering hole
for more than a century from the same corner of Rowe
Street. Lim’s Hot Bread is still many locals’ favourite for
pork rolls. Perhaps the key is to constantly change and
adapt with your customers and the community.
Which is your favourite shop from the past? Email us
