northbrooktower.com news the northbrook tower | May 3, 2018 | 23 THE LAKE FOREST LEADER Five lawsuits claim Lake Bluff school district knew of ongoing abuse Multiple lawsuits filed April 24 allege that Lake Bluff School District 65 was aware and neglectful of ongoing sexual abuse by a teacher in the 1970s and 1980s. At a news conference the afternoon of Thursday, April 26, in Chicago attorneys representing five victims of Charles Ritz, 66 — a Lake Bluff Junior High teacher from 1975 to 1985 who pleaded guilty to public indecency in May of 2017 for an instance in 1985 when he masturbated in front of children at a pizza party in Waukegan — announced the lawsuits. The Lake Bluff Police Department began investigating Ritz in June 2016, after multiple former D65 students accused Ritz of sexual abuse in the ’70s and ’80s. Investigators interviewed more than 50 witnesses before issuing an arrest warrant for Ritz, who was living in California at the time. Alleged abuse victim John Bollman spoke at the press conference, along with attorneys Jeff Anderson, of Jeff Anderson & Associates, and Marc Pearlman, of Frost Pearlman. Lawsuits against D65 were also filed by Joseph Lombardi and the family of Edward Higginson, and two anonymous parties each identified as John Doe. The lawsuits claim that the district was first made aware of the potential dangers and illicit behavior of Ritz in 1978, while the five victims were allegedly abused in 1980-85. In September 1985, Ritz resigned from D65 without mention of the alleged abuse, the lawsuits state, and Ritz continued to teach minors in Southern California. Reporting by Joe Coughlin, Publisher. THE WILMETTE BEACON Pearce to fill vacant seat on Wilmette Village Board A Wilmette Village Board trustee seat has been vacant for the last two months after Trustee Steve Leonard resigned at the end of February. But that will soon change as Leonard’s replacement will be sworn in at the next board meeting. Village President Bob Bielinski announced the appointment of former Village Trustee George Pearce to the position at the Village Board’s Tuesday, April 24 meeting. The board will vote to approve this appointment at the Tuesday, May 8 meeting and Pearce will be sworn in at that time. Upon Leonard’s resignation on Feb. 24, Bielinski had 60 days to appoint an individual to fill Leonard’s vacancy. With that two-month period now coming to an end, Bielinski appointed Pearce to fill Leonard’s vacancy. “We are short one trustee right now, which will be remedied at the next meeting,” Bielinski said. “I’m pleased to announce at this meeting my appointment of Mr. Pearce. THE GLENVIEW LANTERN Bond referendum pushes next park district budget to nearly $41 million The Glenview Park District will have approximately $41 million to work with in the upcoming fiscal year. During its Thursday, April 26 meeting, the board unanimously approved a $40,573,543 budget for the fiscal year beginning May 1. This amount represents an overall increase of 21.5 percent from the prior year’s budget, attributable to the March 20 passage of a $17 million bond referendum to fund the renovation of the 45-year-old Glenview Ice Center and improvements at The Grove. Deputy Executive Director Katie Skibbe, who made the presentation to the board, said the budget designates approximately $26 million for operations, $9.6 million for capital projects and $4.7 million for debt repayment.
