chemistry, maneuvering
through the different
channels of the brain that
are active when children
are engaging with content
on a screen.
One of Dreiske’s main
methodologies involves
giving parents homework
for their kids to ask them
questions about what
they liked and what they
didn’t like upon a screen
interaction. From her perspective,
the exercise is
as simple to do as work
through a picture book
but now creates a parent/
children sphere around
screens.
“When you think about
it, nobody motormouths
through a kid’s book;
you’re constantly interacting
with the book. You’re
cuddling, you’re talking
about something that happened
that day at school
or at the park, and you’re
relating what’s happening
in the story with the book
to things in the child’s
life. It’s highly interactive,”
she said.
Essentially, Dreiske
said, what parents have
is the ability to connect
with their children on core
family and societal values
before their children get
to their screens. Additionally,
she said parents’ relationships
with their childrens’
screens should be
more than just selection,
supervision and censorship.
“We can change that
very simply by No. 1, letting
them know we care
about how they’re responding;
No. 2, giving
them a job, something to
watch for, something that
makes them accountable
for what they’re watching;
and No. 3, making
sure that they’re ideas
are paid attention to from
adults,” she said.
From panel discussions,
conference presentations
with physicians
and children’s workshops,
Dreiske said the reception
to her methods have been
overwhelmingly positive.
“Parents respond in extraordinary
ways when
they see the interest and
the intelligence that their
children demonstrate
in relation to engaging
screens,” she said. “When
you’re interacting with
children, let them own the
answers.”
To promote her new book,
Dreiske will be at the Northbrook
Public Library on
