Coulsdon Liberal Democrats 

Liberal Democrat candidate Richard Howard 

explains his journey from a career in Army 

bomb disposal, to standing as a councillor 

for Old Coulsdon in the local elections on May 

3rd. 

People often ask me what makes you choose 

to do bomb disposal and the answer is that you 

don’t, it chooses you. Following Sandhurst, I was 

selected for training as an Ammunition Technical 

Officer (ATO). At the end of a 16-month course 

covering every aspect of ammunition 

management, you’re taught how to dispose of 

unexploded ordnance. Everyone who trains as 

an ATO knows that this could be something you 

do, but whether you can do it is another matter. 

What you need to do this is not what most 

people think. Sure, a steady nerve and degree 

of manual dexterity are necessary, but the most 

difficult part of any task was what we called 

‘threat assessment’. This was the real skill; 

working out exactly what you were facing 

before you had to walk up to it. I managed to 

pass the Improvised Explosive Device Disposal 

(IEDD) phase and was posted to 11 Explosive 

Ordnance Regiment, to command the 

detachment in Colchester. 

I spent most of my career in 11 EOD Regiment, 

qualifying as a ‘High Threat’ IEDD operator and 

completing four operational tours: in Iraq, 

Afghanistan and twice in Northern Ireland. 

It was a hugely rewarding time and I really loved 

what I did, but there were also times of sadness. 

I lost close friends and colleagues, with others 

suffering life changing injuries. As I said before, 

you don’t really choose this way of life, but I was 

glad that it chose me. I met some of most amazing 

people and had some incredible 

experiences. I wouldn’t give these up for 

anything in the world. 

So how does all this all this bring me to standing 

for Croydon Council here in Coulsdon? When I 

returned from Iraq in 2007 having seen some 

fairly horrendous things, I went to the 

supermarket and was suddenly overcome with 

resentment and anger at the people there. 

How can they be just getting on with their 

everyday lives? Don’t they know what is 

happening out there? 

It was a fairly dark time for me but eventually I 

was able to put it all in context and it really made 

me appreciate the freedoms we enjoy in this 

country. 

In the Army, I had to remain apolitical but always 

upheld strong liberal values. I am a great believer 

in freedom, not just the freedom to go about 

your daily lives, but also the freedom to pursue 

whatever goals, dreams and aspirations you 

have. However, the Conservatives have turned 

their backs on liberalism, pursuing a set of 

policies that will trap a great many people into a 

life not of their own choosing, but one enslaved 

by poverty, ill-health and poor education. 

Labour too have abandoned their liberal 

principles, moving towards a society dominated 

by the state, imposing its will on every aspect of 

our lives and the economy. 

I realised after the last general election that I 

could either sit around complaining about the 

state of politics; or do something about it. 

So, I did something about it and joined the 

Liberal Democrats, the only party committed to 

building both a stronger economy and a fairer 

society. When I was asked if I would consider 

standing for Croydon Council, I knew it was 

something I had to do. 

The motto of Sandhurst is ‘Serve to Lead’ and 

this something I truly believed in throughout my 

Army career. My first loyalty was always to the 

soldiers that I had the privilege to command. 

They trusted in me to make the right decisions 

and I never forgot that it was me that served 

them, not the other way around. One of the 

best pieces of advice I received whilst serving 

was when someone once said: “Remember that 

at the end of your pen, is a soldier.” What they 

meant was that the decisions you take have a 

real impact on real people’s lives. 

I sometimes think that those currently sitting on 

Croydon Council forget this. Too many issues are 

kicked around like a political football, trying to 

score points instead making the right decisions. 

I hope to make a real difference if elected on 

May 3rd. We need a strong liberal voice on 

Croydon Council with the integrity to do the 

right thing, and the leadership to do the thing 

right.

Ricotta Stuffed Pork 

Serves 4 

Ready in 1 hour 

Ingredients 

• 4 thin-cut pork loin steaks 

• 175g ricotta cheese 

• 2 tbsp fresh chopped basil 

• 1 tsp finely grated lemon zest 

• Salt & freshly ground black 

pepper 

• 1 tbsp olive oil 

• 15g butter 

• 450ml meat or vegetable stock 

• 4 tbsp dry sherry or apple juice 

• 175g green beans, trimmed 

• 2 tbsp pine nuts, toasted 

This is a great way to jazz up pork steaks for a midweek meal. 

Serve with brown rice or creamy mashed potatoes on the side, if 

liked.

Place the pork steaks between two sheets of cling film or greaseproof 

paper and bash with a rolling pin until very thin. 

In a small bowl, mix the ricotta cheese with the chopped basil and 

lemon zest and season lightly with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 

Place a spoonful of the cheese mixture at the base of each piece of pork 

then carefully roll up to enclose the stuffing and secure each with a 

wooden cocktail stick. 

Heat the oil and butter in a large non-stick frying pan over a medium 

heat. Fry the pork rolls for 4-5 minutes, turning once until browned all 

over. Pour in the stock and sherry or apple juice and simmer for 20-25 

minutes until cooked through. Remove the pork rolls and keep warm. 

Add the green beans to the frying pan and cook for 5-6 minutes until 

just tender. 

Slice each pork roll and serve on the green beans with the pan juices 

and toasted pine nuts. 

TIP If you don’t have fresh basil use 1 tsp dried mixed herbs and for extra 

flavour add a crushed garlic clove. 

Chocolate Fondant Puddings 

Serves 4 

Ready in 45 mins 

Don’t overcook these divine chocolate puds or the centres will 

set and you’ll lose the gooey molten middle. You can prepare 

them a couple of hours in advance and bake them just before 

serving. 

Ingredients: 

• 175g unsalted butter, plus extra 

for greasing 

• 175g caster sugar 

• 175g good quality plain 

chocolate, broken into pieces 

• 3 large eggs 

• 50g plain flour 

• Cocoa powder and icing sugar, 

to dust 

• Whipped cream and 

strawberries, to serve 

1. Preheat the oven to 190C/fan 170C/gas mark 5. Lightly butter four 

300ml capacity ramekin dishes (see Tip) and sprinkle with a little of the 

caster sugar. 

2. Place the chocolate and butter in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of 

simmering water and leave until melted. Remove from the heat and 

stir until smooth. Cool for 5 minutes. 

3. In a large bowl whisk the eggs and remaining caster sugar together 

for 5 minutes until very thick, pale and creamy, then whisk in the 

chocolate mixture. Sift over the flour and gently fold in using a metal 

spoon. 

4.Divide the mixture between the four dishes. Place on a baking sheet 

and bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes until the puddings 

have risen and are just set on the outside – the tops should still wobble 

when pressed lightly. Run a knife around the edge of the puddings

Home & Interiors: Make The Most Of A Small Bathroom 

Even a tiny bathroom can function 

brilliantly and look gorgeous. Our 

top ten tricks of the trade will help 

make the most of your space. 

The perfect bathroom – whether it’s 

a shared family affair or an en suite 

shower and WC – is a great blend of 

comfort, good looks and functional 

efficiency, all achievable even in a 

small space. 

1 Choose subtle colours 

Maintaining a pale, neutral colour 

palette will automatically open up 

a small bathroom, giving it a clean, 

sophisticated, contemporary feel. If 

you can’t live without colour, watery 

blues and greens have a cool, 

clear quality that help the room 

feel light and airy. Add texture to 

avoid an overly clinical feel – think 

timber shelving, wicker baskets, 

waffle towels and linen blinds, for 

example. 

2 Fit excellent storage 

Nothing makes a room feel small 

as much as too much clutter. The 

simple answer is to minimise what 

you keep in your bathroom and 

then find clever spaces to store 

it. Cupboards do take up valuable 

floor space but, because cleaning 

products and toiletries are pretty 

small, slimline storage will suffice. 

If renovating, you can build false 

walls to conceal pipework and set 

cupboards or niches within them; 

otherwise, look for anywhere that 

storage could be added, from above 

the door to below the basin, even 

behind the bath panel or a rack 

inside the shower. 

3 Make the most of natural 

light 

Enhance the space by getting 

the most light possible through 

the windows – make sure 

nothing on the sills is blocking 

it, and that window treatments 

do not cover any part of the 

glass. Then bounce the light 

around the room by using 

mirrors and glossy tiles. 

4 Select fittings wisely 

Bathroom fittings designed 

for small bathrooms don’t 

compromise on looks or 

function, including short-projection 

WCs, shower-baths, thin-but-tall 

towel rails and ultra-slim basins. For 

awkward spaces, consider corner 

showers, basins and WCs. Wall or 

mixer taps create room on a small 

basin, and if space is tight add a 

wall-mounted soap dispenser. 

5 Raise it off the floor 

Even without using smaller-thanaverage 

or ingeniously shaped 

fittings, it is possible to make a 

bathroom appear more spacious 

than it really is by installing wallmounted 

pieces. Not only do they 

look modern and sophisticated, 

but they also show off the floor 

space beneath, and the more floor 

you can see, the bigger the room 

appears. 

6 Lighting is vital 

Try to create a suitably bright and 

breezy bathroom lighting scheme 

that meets all your requirements, 

from putting on make-up to reading 

in the bath. Avoid lights that 

dangle or protrude too much, as 

they will interrupt the impression 

of smooth-flowing space; instead, 

choose recessed spotlights, or 

neat directional lights mounted on 

a slender track. As a hidden light 

source you could fit LED strips 

beneath wall units, with a baffle 

board in front to avoid glare, and 

don’t forget an illuminated mirror.

to be IP-rated for safety (ask advice 

from your electrician).

Multifunction is the solution. 

Choose towel radiators, storage 

seats, mirrored cabinets and 

basins with cupboards beneath, for 

example. 

8 Consider underfloor heating 

If you are renovating, installing 

underfloor heating is relatively easy 

and inexpensive, and saves the floor 

space taken up by a radiator. 

9 Employ visual tricks 

It may seem counter-intuitive, but 

large-format tiles (wall or floor) can 

work better in compact bathrooms 

than smaller tiles, which may 

appear fussy. With fewer grout 

lines, large tiles look sleek and are 

also easier to maintain. 

10 Assess your window options 

Curtains in a bathroom make 

a pleasant change to the hard 

surfaces elsewhere, but in a small 

room it is best to avoid anything 

too flouncy. Floaty sheers in simple 

gathers are better than dark, heavy 

fabrics – a flat panel of muslin 

threaded onto a pole or wire across 

the bottom half of the window 

could work well. Alternatively, 

try a neat Roman or roller blind, 

waterproof louvre shutters or 

simple frosted glass.

Striking Sunflowers 

by Pippa Greenwood 

They’re bold, they’re brash, 

they’re larger than life and they’re 

gorgeous! Yes, sunflowers are 

one of the most stunning and 

impressive flowers you could 

have in your garden – and one 

of the easiest to grow too. If you 

get your skates on you can sow 

them this month and achieve a 

fantastic flowery display in just a 

few months’ time. So which ones 

should you choose and how do you 

go about getting the best crop of 

flowers? 

There are some fantastically 

fast-growing and potentially very 

tall varieties such as ‘Russian 

Giant’ and ‘Titan’. The latter is 

exceptionally tall, reaching a 

potential height of up to 360cm or 

12ft and having heads of anything 

up to 60cm (2ft) in diameter! 

If space is limited, or you simply 

prefer you flowers lower to the 

ground, there are some delightful 

miniature or dwarf varieties 

available. The F1 variety ‘Little 

Dorrit’ grows to about 60cm 

(2ft) and has rich yellow flowers 

with very dark centres, and looks 

great as a border edging. Another 

favourite is ‘Little Leo’ at just 45cm 

(18in), which makes lots of impact 

with golden yellow heads on multibranching 

stems. 

Forget the idea that sunflowers 

are yellow and ring the changes – 

nowadays there are many other 

colours readily available. One of 

the richest shades I know is ‘Black 

Magic’, which has maroon flowers 

and is multi-branching, reaching a 

height of about 180cm (6ft). 

Grow yourself a few for cutting 

too, and you’ll have a vase or 

more full of flowers that would 

cost a fortune in the shops. Many 

varieties are suitable, including the 

orangey-brown ‘Velvet Queen’, 

‘Black Velvet’ and the bi-coloured 

‘Magic Roundabout’ (great for 

those who suffer from hay fever as 

this variety is pollen-free). 

If you want some in containers, 

that is also possible: ‘Pacino 

Colada’ is a compact variety 

growing to just 40cm (16in) and 

has 10cm (4in) wide golden-yellow 

flowers, making a wonderful plant 

for a colourful container on a 

sunny patio, sheltered balcony or 

in the flower beds. 

I’ve still got a fascination with 

tall sunflowers, and I’ve never 

met a child who doesn’t enjoy 

a sunflower competition. The 

really sturdy and tall varieties like 

‘Russian Giant’ and ‘Giant Single’ 

are perfect for smaller gardeners, 

and as they reach heights of about 

180cm (6ft) will soon dwarf them! 

Sunflowers make a cheap and 

cheerful addition to a garden 

boundary, adding splashes of 

colour to even the most dreary 

fence line or helping to mask the 

ugly appearance of a garage or 

decrepit garden shed. They’re a lot 

faster growing than Leylandii but 

these colourful beauties won’t get 

out of hand. 

The seeds of sunflowers can be 

sown right now – in fact you 

should get a good crop of blooms 

if you sow them anytime between 

March and May, depending on 

the weather and where you live. 

You can sow them straight into 

the soil or into pots of compost. I 

like to use RootTrainers as these 

encourage really well-developed 

and deep roots to develop, 

and make it easy to plant out 

the sunflowers with minimum 


root disturbance; see www.

As their name suggests, sunflowers 

love, indeed need, plenty of 

sunshine to thrive and put on their 

best possible show of blooms. The 

great thing is that although many 

are pretty tall, each plant does not 

actually take up much space at 

ground level. 

Slugs and snails love sunflowers 

and can literally eat them to the 

ground, especially if the weather 

is damp. I always grow sunflowers 

in small individual pots and then 

plant them out when they’re a 

few inches tall. It may sound like 

I’m pampering them, but it means 

they’re bigger and tougher and 

better able to resist attack. As an 

added precaution, put a ring of 

slug-deterring material around the 

base of each one – crushed shells, 

crushed eggshells, coco-shell or 

pine needles for instance. 

If you’re growing sunflowers on 

anything other than a protected 

site, it may be necessary to give 

the taller varieties a bit of extra 

support in the form of a sturdy 

bamboo cane or slim stake, just in 

case the wind blows too strongly!

FINANCE: It’s Not Only PPI That You Can 

Reclaim

The Payment Protection Insurance 

mis-selling scandal has resulted in 

billions of pounds being repaid to 

customers by the banks and other 

large financial institutions. But it’s 

not just PPI that can be reclaimed 

from organisations failing to 

follow stringent selling guidelines 

designed to protect the public. 

So what other reclaims could 

you potentially make? From 

bank charges to student loan 

repayments, here are a few other 

reclaim opportunities you might 

want to look into. 

Packaged bank accounts 

Although packaged bank accounts 

are very useful in many cases, it’s 

possible that the product may have 

been mis-sold in a similar way to 

PPI. So what could constitute misselling 

in this instance? 

• You weren’t told that you had to 

pay a monthly fee. 

• The account was sold to 

you by an overbearing or 

overenthusiastic salesperson. 

• You don’t qualify for the 

insurance policies included in 

the package – on age or healthrelated 

grounds, for example. 

• The bank told you your credit 

rating would improve if you 

opened this type of account. 

Whatever the reason, you can 

claim a refund of the fees, plus 

interest, from the bank. Money 

Saving Expert and other websites 

offer free resources in this respect, 

to help you make your claim. 

If the bank refuses to repay, 

you can take your claim to the 

Financial Ombudsman Service – an 

independent and free service set 

up to resolve disputes between 

financial institutions and their 

customers. Furthermore, the 

Ombudsman ultimately has the 

power to enforce their decision if 

it differs from that of the financial 

institution concerned. 

Bank charges 

Despite the banks winning a 

2009 Supreme Court Ruling on 

the fairness of their charges, 

you may be able to reclaim bank 

charges that you believe are 

unfair, particularly if you’re facing 

financial hardship. 

Being charged high fees when 

you’re experiencing financial 

difficulty can exacerbate an already 

distressing situation. If you’re in 

this position and have exceeded 

a pre-arranged overdraft limit, or 

cheques or direct debits have been 

returned on your account, you can 

write to your bank explaining the 

situation and requesting a refund. 

Council tax payments 

If your property was placed in 

the wrong council tax band, 

you may be able to reclaim the 

overpayments made – potentially 

for decades – as well as reducing 

your ongoing monthly costs. 

When properties were valued in 

preparation for the new Council 

Tax system, the process became 

known as ‘second gear valuations.’ 

It was said that those given the 

task of valuation didn’t move 

out of second gear when driving 

past the properties, leading to 

inaccurate results. 

Although properties in Wales were 

later revalued, those in England 

and Scotland remained in their 

original (potentially incorrect) 

council tax band. If you live in 

England, you can confirm your 

banding on the Valuation Office 

Agency (VOA) website. 

You also need to check the council 

tax band of neighbours with 

property closest to yours in terms 

of size and value. This can be done 

either online, or by asking your 

neighbours in person. 

If they’re in a lower band you may 

have a case for reclaiming, but 

be aware that your own property 


could have been correctly valued. 

This would potentially mean that 

your neighbours were liable to 

pay a higher amount, possibly 

backdated to 1991, so it’s advisable 

to tread carefully in this respect. 

Student loan overpayments 

Student loan repayments are 

deducted from your earnings 

by the Student Loans Company 

(SLC), rather than from your bank 

account. As the SLC only receives 

earnings and employment updates 

annually, the information they hold 

can be sometimes be outdated. 

This means that it’s easy to 

overpay on your student loan if 

your income reduces, or when the 

loan has been paid off. If you think 

you’ve overpaid for any reason, 

you can call the Student Loans 

Company to check, and verify your 

bank details should a refund be 

due. 

Amazon Prime 

If you’ve taken out a free 30-day 

subscription to Amazon Prime and 

simply forgotten to cancel it, you 

should receive an instant refund if 

you or anyone authorised on the 

account hasn’t used any of the 

services. 

It’s also been known for Amazon 

customers to inadvertently 

click the wrong button when 

purchasing an item and take 

out a free trial of Amazon Prime 

unintentionally. If this has 

happened to you, and you’ve been 

charged the Prime membership fee 

at the end of the trial period, you 

can contact Amazon to explain the 

situation. They should offer you a 

full or pro-rata refund, depending 

on whether you’ve used any 

of their Prime services in the 

meantime. 

Claiming your right to a refund 

as a consumer is important, and 

should be pursued if you believe 

that you’ve been wrongly charged. 

Reclaiming this money can help 

your financial situation, and sends 

a strong message to financial and 

other institutions that they must 

comply with the regulations and 

take care of their customers.

A lightbulb moment 

I am not a particularly practical person. My 

skill-set lies elsewhere and I am more than 

happy to stand down when tasks involving 

drills and spirit levels present themselves. 

However for more mundane tasks I like to 

think I am not wholly unsuited and one such 

task is the changing of the humble lightbulb. 

It is something I have done 

countless times over the years giving little 

thought to the dangers of such an innocuous 

activity. A month ago I visited my mother’s 

house in order to change a bulb in her loft. 

A simple task and well within my reach both 

literally and metaphorically! I found a spare 

energy saver bulb (bayonet type) and climbed 

up the loft ladder. Removing the old bulb 

went without a hitch; however as I pushed 

and twisted the new bulb into place I heard a 

sound. It was a faint crack. Followed by the 

sense that something had gone wrong, badly 

wrong. 

I will spare you the worst of the details but in 

summary the bulb broke in my hand, cutting 

my thumb so deeply that it severed the artery 

and nerve and cut though 80% of the tendon. 

Yikes! 

St George’s Hospital operated and reattached 

the nerve and tendon and I am now in a hard 

plastic splint which runs the length of my 

forearm with weekly sessions at the hospital 

to get back the movement and sensation. 

They have been brilliant throughout. 

Being my dominant hand has meant that 

writing is very challenging and signing, 

almost impossible. Driving is also out for two 

months. My friends and colleagues as well as 

my mother, have been very helpful and I have 

received countless lifts and a good number of 

meals. It has been as heart-warming as the 

situation has been frustrating! 

It is, perhaps, all too easy to imagine 

we are fine on our own and have no need 

of God. My sense of self-reliance has taken 

a knock as I have found myself unable to do 

much of what I’m good at or enjoy and have 

had to seek help for many simple tasks. 

The Bible speaks of a God who knows us 

intimately, loves us deeply and wants to help 

us; though we are often slow to respond 

simply because we feel we have things under 

control ourselves. 

Whatever your circumstances I’d encourage 

you to consider your response. 

And be careful with those light bulbs!

We’re bidding goodbye to our current home in Coulsdon after nearly 20 years and moving 

to smart new, accessible and purpose-built premises up the road in Whyteleafe. 

Our new home will be much more user-friendly for those with mobility issues. There is

Warlingham and Whyteleafe stations. 

The Coulsdon practice closed on Friday 6th April and the contractors will be working on the 

new site until the summer, so, we are temporarily located at Venus Laser and Beauty,

home. 

Our pleasure at moving is, of course, tinged with sadness. We have very much enjoyed

For the Society’s Visitors’ Debate, Conservative 

Councillor Tim Pollard proposed that ‘It’s time for 

Croydon to come back to the Conservatives’. 

The debate, he said, focused on what residents 

want for their town, expecting their Council to be 

on their side, but our present incumbents are not 

good at listening! Witness the record number of 

petitions against current policies – e.g., the 

abolition of Green Waste collections, the Fairfield 

Halls’ renovation, the controversial Brick by Brick 

developments. Tribal rivalries between North and 

South Croydon are divisive and counterproductive; 

lack of transparency in Council administration, 

where in camera policy meetings then delegate 

unchallenged action, leave people isolated and 

angry. However, as a measure of democracy, the 

Council has now re-introduced local meetings – at 

which, so far, it has been concluded that the Council 

doesn’t listen! The Conservatives propose a Cabinet 

Road Show system, with no more unquestioned 

delegation and there will be more public meetings. 

The Council’s Planning Committee has operated 

badly, said Councillor Pollard. There should be 

no more pre-application consultation between 

Planning and developers seeking to ensure rapid, 

unopposed approval for smaller projects. 

Opposition parties should have some 

representation in Planning, as should Residents’ 

Associations. A Conservative Council would 

encourage the formation of Residents’ Associations 

in the North of the borough; the Westfield and 

Taverner House projects would be accelerated and 

the Mayor of London’s grossly unfair council 

house target for Croydon – 50,000 houses, also 

questioned by Labour – would be queried 

vigorously. A Conservative Council will build more 

social housing, crack down on fly-tippers, increase 

recycling and will not reduce kerbside bin 

collections. Conservatives would promote jobs in 

town and district centres, preserving free parking 

and ensuring super-fast broadband throughout the 

borough. Cultural policies mostly agree with those 

of Labour; parks should be effectively managed and 

libraries left open. Youth policies are important. 

Croydon has some problems with knife crime, and 

a Tory Council will consider the successful example 

of Glasgow, where violence has been reduced by 

treating offenders as having underlying mental 

health issues. The Labour initiative on a Youth 

Parliament is a good idea, said Councillor Pollard, 

and concluded by saying that a if Conservative 

administration wants to be a ‘Listening Council’, it 

must work more closely with other groups. 

Labour Councillor Andrew Pelling began by noting 

that, as a former leader of the Tory opposition in 

Council, he had some sympathy with Councillor 

Pollard, but advised that railing against the Labour 

administration does not engage with electors. 

Today’s Labour manifesto reflects people’s 

concerns – with crime, housing and the NHS. 

National polls show Labour to be 10% ahead of 

the Tories, so the Tories are more at risk of losing 

Croydon seats than gaining them. Tory issues – 

Construction in Croydon, walking, cycling, driving 

- are important, but not really in tune with ordinary 

electors. The Tories’ claim to ‘listen’ contrasts 

sharply with their office record; wasting money 

on an exorbitantly expensive Town Hall, attempts 

to close libraries (a book token, claimed one Tory 

councillor, would be as good) and just two 

prosecutions for fly-tipping. 

Labour is promoting younger councillors 

and added that while the Tories claimed to support 

diversity, only 5 of 28 reconfigured Tory seats could 

be considered as Black and Minority Ethnic. 

Councillor Pelling also vigorously opposed the 

accusation that Momentum is a militant left-wing 

group. The Tories’ criticism of the Planning 

Department ignores the fact that planning is a 

fundamentally legal issue, not a democratic one. 

The Conservatives’ Council manifesto totals nearly 

£84 million – absurd for a council facing further 

Government grant cuts. Looking at the current 

Labour administration, successful projects include 

Croydon Affordable Homes charity; a £9 million 

Youth Zone; refitting sprinklers in high-rise council 

homes; small business discounts; investing £1.3 

million in new litter vacuums/solar-powered bins; 

an extensive new school building programme; 

an apprenticeship programme for local residents 

aged 16 and over; the One Croydon Alliance, an 

integrated health and social care system to help 

the over 65s achieve an independent life. Labour’s 

caring policies make good economic sense and have 

helped over 1,300 families avoid homelessness, 

given budgeting support to more than 10,000 

people, launched the Live Well Croydon programme 

and has earned our town the Flagship Food 

Borough status in 2015. 

Our Labour Council is unlocking Croydon’s 

potential. 

No wonder Secretary of State for Housing, 

Communities and Local Government Sajid Javid has 

congratulated Croydon’s Labour Council ‘for its 

hard work in very demanding times’. 

The motion was won by 23 votes to 12, with 6 

abstentions. 

The next debate, ‘People should make provision 

for their care in old age’ will take place on July 2nd 

at the new meeting time of 7.30 p.m. Speakers to

Can I share something with you? 

Did you know you can save yourself the 

unnecessary money and stress you incur due to 

some of the preventable electrical hazards that 

occur in your home? Just a few tips like the ones I 

am about to share in this article will ensure this: 

I've been through about a mile of fibre glass loft 

insulation; the old black, itchy stuff which you can see 

dancing past a torch beam. I tormented this through 

the heat of summer, usually on my belly. This is just a 

small part of my overall job description and it's by far 

not the worst thing I have ever had to do. It's safe to 

say I have earned myself enough experience to shake 

a stick at - a very big stick with bells on! To get to the 

point, I'm an electrician. 

I was dragged through a 4-year apprenticeship back 

when 'feelings' couldn't hurt you as much as a twisted 

nipple or a dead arm. Before my graft even started, I 

would be driven to work in the back of an old transit 

van. My seat was a cold steel van vault which had 

developed quite a dip in the middle through the years 

of other apprentices sitting here. I would try my best 

to not to slide off every time the van took a corner, 

went over a speed bump, or climbed up a steep 

hill. It's fair to say I didn't tickle my way through my 

electrical education. I got stuck in and I got dirty. I 

wouldn't have had it any other way. 

All through the years of enduring my electrical career, 

I've witnessed my fair share of common 

problems. Many of them are easily rectifiable and 

right under your nose as customers to tackle. 

Without further ado, I have compiled my top 3 

electrical mishaps around the home which can result 

in fire, faults and electrocution, as well as how to 

prevent or solve these mishaps easily on your own; 

#1 - Multi Socket adaptors (cube shaped) 

with NO FUSE. 

These little gadgets are common as muck and can be 

bought from newsagents, £1 busters and bric-a-brac 

stores. They're not manufactured in the UK and won't 

have a British Standard 'BS' number on them. 

They have no fuse and no fuse means no overload 

protection. That wall socket can only take a maximum 

load of up to 13A. If you overload with multiple 

plugs, it will heat up, become brittle and slowly melt 

from the inside out. 

Solution - If it doesn't have a fuse or BS number, bin 

it! 

#2 - Halogen downlights 

and loft insulation. 

I'm sure you're aware of just how 

hot these halogen lamps get. I've 

had a few burns straight through 

my gloves in the past. Now all the 

heat from these halogen lamps will 

require room to escape to prevent 

it from becoming a little oven. 

If you've recently had your loft 

re-insulated, then the chances are 

that the fiberglass insulation has 

just been rolled straight over the 

top of them. Before they melt their 

own cabling or set the Christmas 

decorations ablaze along with any 

other cardboard boxes, you need 

to remedy this. 

Solution - Cut gaps in the insulation to allow the 

lights heat to escape. Don't store ANYTHING above 

the light (especially cardboard). If possible, replace 

the lamps with a LED equivalent. 

#3 - USB chargers and children. 

Now the mathematics behind this problem says that 

at 12 Volts, everything should be safe. But as we 

know, not all electrical equipment works perfectly, 

especially the cheap and cheerful versions bought 

from online or the £1 shops. 

The problem I refer to is children sucking and 

chewing the leads of USB chargers. I have seen this 

first hand on more than one occasion. It can result in 

serious mouth burns and even brain injury. 

Solution - If it's not being used, then turn it off. 

Remove the wire from the charger if possible due to 

cases in which it can switched back on.

THE DARK… 

• Dark colours can look warm, cosy 

and inviting, as well as intensely 

luxurious and sophisticated. They 

work especially well in a WC, snug, 

library, dining room, home office 

or games room, but – with a bit 

more decorative courage – are 

hugely effective in living rooms and 

bedrooms, too. 

• What colours to choose? Charcoal

Choose a high-gloss finish to shine 

light all around. 

• The deeper the background, the 

more other colours ‘pop’ out in front 

of it. Raspberry pink, crimson, lime, 

orange, emerald and mustard are all 

great choices for accessories in a dark 

colour scheme.

Infiniti QX50

What is it? 

You’d be forgiven for not knowing 

much about Infiniti. Launched 

in the UK less than 10 years ago, 

the Japanese luxury brand is still 

attempting to establish itself as an 

alternative to the German trio and 

struggling to top 3,500 sales a year. 

This is the firm’s latest attempt to 

change that – a mid-size SUV that 

aims to tempt buyers away from 

the likes of a BMW X3 or Audi Q5. 

With a host of smart technology, a 

distinctive design and a bafflingly 

clever new engine, Infiniti is hoping 

the QX50 will rapidly become the 

brand’s best-selling car worldwide. 

What’s new? 

Built on a brand new platform – one 

not currently shared with any other 

model in the Renault Nissan Alliance 

– the QX50 debuts a number 

of world-first gadgets. These 

include dynamic noise-cancelling 

technology in the engine, seats 

designed in conjunction with NASA 

and a petrol engine that promises to 

offer sports levels of performance, 

but with the economy of a diesel. 

What’s under the bonnet? 

That clever new VC-Turbo engine is 

a world-first variable compression 

ratio engine. For the non-technically 

minded that means it offers the 

power of a 2.0-litre turbo petrol with 

the torque and efficiency of a fourcylinder 

diesel. Currently there are 

no plans to offer a diesel engine. 

On our early pre-production drive in 

America, Infiniti wouldn’t reveal how 

efficient its new engine is. No UK 

fuel economy figures or emissions 

details were released as it was still to 

be type approved for Europe. 

What we do know is the 2.0-litre 

engine produces 268bhp and 380Nm 

of torque. For comparison, a petrolpowered 

BMW X3 20i offers 184bhp 

and 290Nm. It seems, then, the 

QX50 has quite the upper hand. 

What’s it like to drive? 

On the road, this clever new engine 

generates impressive, usable 

performance. It’ll hit 60mph in 6.3 

seconds – a whole two seconds 

faster than the equivalent BMW 

– and will go on to a top speed of 

143mph. 

The noise it makes while doing 

so is an acquired taste. Much of it 

is synthetically generated and it 

precariously teeters on the edge 

of deeply satisfying and incredibly 

annoying. There’s also a CVT 

automatic gearbox, which is fine 

at sedate speeds but becomes 

noticeably irritatingly audible in the 

higher rev ranges. 

Sadly, Infiniti is persisting with its 

drive-by-wire steering, which came 

in for much criticism on its Q50 

saloon, and is little better here. 

Although it allows the car to do 

clever things – like independently 

steer individual wheels, hundreds 

of time a second – it lacks feel and 

at slow speeds feels like an arcade 

game. Whether that’ll bother the 

average SUV buyer remains to be 

seen. 

The QX50’s new chassis and groundup 

design has certainly resulted in a 

quiet and comfortable ride. It soaked 

up the worst that America’s roads 

threw at it and thanks to a dynamic 

noise-cancelling engine mount – 

which actively works to stop noise 

entering the cabin – it’s calm inside 

too. 

What’s more, it can even drive itself 

– up to a point. Hit the car’s ProPilot 

button and it’ll steer for you (but 

you’ll need to keep a hand on the 

wheel), speeding up and slowing 

down with traffic. And there’s a 

clever Forward Collision Warning 

system which bounces radar around 


and under cars in front to spot traffic 

slowing down before you do. Infiniti 

says it can even detect a slowing 

motorbike hidden in front of an 

HGV. 

How does it look? 

Looks wise, it’s certainly a break 

from the status quo. While BMW’s 

X3 has been labelled ‘boring’, and 

Audi’s Q5 ‘generic’, the QX50 has 

a welcome and genuinely different 

design. What’s also pleasing is the 

fact the frankly quite hard-on-theeye 

look of past Infiniti SUVs has 

been toned down. 

What’s it like inside? 

Inside is where the QX50 really 

shines. Hand-stitched leather 

panels, alcantara and a swooping 

dash give it a luxury feel, and 

although some of the switchgear 

is obviously borrowed from the 

Alliance it’s far better packaged than 

early Infiniti models. 

What’s the spec like? 

The QX50 is a while off arriving 

on our shores, so as such Infiniti 

is remaining tight lipped about 

specification and pricing. Executives 

did tell us that it would undercut 

BMW and Audi rivals and it’s likely 

much of the new technology will be 

included as standard. The QX50 is 

slated to arrive either late this year 

or very early in 2019. 

Verdict 

Infiniti believes the QX50 is the best 

car it has ever made – and we’d 

find it hard to argue with them. 

The clever new VC-Turbo engine 

is impressive, the ride quality and 

interior finish excellent and we 

even like the looks. Quite how Brits 

will react to a petrol-powered SUV 

with no diesel option remains to be 

seen, though, and its success will 

hinge on just how much it undercuts 

established rivals from the German 

brands.

Local Poet’s first anthology 

The Robin 

Sings at 

Midnight

‘The Robin Sings at Midnight’ is a 

debut anthology published by Sue 

Young of Coulsdon, Surrey. 

The intriguing title comes from a 

line in the book’s first poem called 

Natural monologues: the robin, my 

gardening companion, who sings at 

midnight through the cold winter, 

to the moon. 

The 100-page book contains an 

eclectic mix of poems from the 

laugh-out-loud (Hell’s Grannies) to the sadness of loss 

(A little mad), as well as various styles to suit many 

moods and intrigue the reader such as a Harry-Potterish 

offering (The keeper of names). She has also included 

different forms of poetry such as villanelles. 

Sue has previously performed her poems on local radio 

and at Poets Anonymous, which holds meetings at 

different venues in Croydon. 

Her poems are also regularly used in the biannual 

Butterfly Service held in the chapel at Croydon 

University Hospital for parents who have suffered the 

loss of a baby.

Three Tips for Looking After 

Your New Guinea Pig 

Guinea pigs are relatively low 

maintenance pets, and can 

be a good choice for families 

with young children. They’re 

very social animals, and careful 

handling from an early age 

not only helps to their build 

confidence, but also encourages 

human interaction. 

Their needs include a warm, dry 

and safe space to live, plenty 

of room to run around, and a 

nutrient-rich diet – here are a few 

tips to help your guinea pig feel 

loved and at home. 

1. Living - Guinea pigs can live 

indoors or outside, but will need 

protection from direct sunlight 

and the winter cold if they’re 

outdoors. Make sure their hutch 

is protected from predators in 

the garden and has a separate 

sleeping area that’s out of sight. 

2. Eating - Good quality, nondusty 

hay should form the major 

part of a guinea pig’s diet, with 

grass, leafy greens, fruit, and 

small quantities of guinea pig 

mix added every day. It’s worth 

remembering that a guinea pig’s 

teeth grow constantly and need 

to be ground down on the hay or 

grass that you provide. 

PETS 

3. Play 

According to the RSPCA, guinea 

pigs are active for up to 20 hours 

a day, so providing plenty of 

toys is key to keeping them 

entertained, especially if you 

choose one guinea pig rather 

than a pair. 

Guinea pigs can live for up to 

eight years, so this is a long 

commitment regardless of the 

lower level of daily care they 

require when compared with cats 

and dogs.

One Giant Leap For Mankind 

“And if Christ has not been raised, 

your faith is futile; you are still in your sins.”. 

1 Corinthians 15:17 (NIV) 

On July 20th, 1969, the astronaut Neil Armstrong left 

the base craft and walked on the moon. His words 

were ‘That's one small step for a man, one giant leap 

for mankind.’ It was a monumental historic moment 

for all of humanity—man had walked on the moon for 

the first time. 

Not wishing to detract from the amazing scientific 

achievement of NASA, I am compelled to ask, how 

have these historic footsteps on the moon helped us? 

Armstrong’s words still resonate today, but how has 

his walking on the moon solved our problems? We 

still have war and bloodshed, famine and disease, 

increasing weather calamities due to global warming, 

etc. 

As a Christian I can say with complete conviction that 

the most historic footsteps of all time which really 

were a ‘giant leap for mankind’ were the steps that 

Jesus Christ took out of the tomb 2,000 years ago. 

Unlike July 20th 1969, the world’s media was not 

present, there was no worldwide news coverage, it 

wasn’t televised or recorded for us to see, it 

happened without witnesses. God does not need man 

to make a statement. Jesus Christ was resurrected 

on a still quiet morning when the world was asleep. 

Jesus’ steps truly were for all mankind, His 

resurrection that morning declared the conquering of 

death itself. There can be no greater leap for mankind 

than to eliminate death. His steps guaranteed His 

children forgiveness of sin and eternal life. Surely 

those steps that morning were and still are the most 

decisive in all human history. A gigantic leap from 

sin and death, to life forever. Romans 6:9 reminds 

us, “For we know that since Christ was raised from 

the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has 

mastery over him.” 

Man walking on the moon was an amazing 

achievement, but God on a cross dying for our sins, 

and then being resurrected and walking in the garden 

that significant morning, was the most pivotal of 

moments for mankind – ever. 

Prayer: Father God, Jesus Christ our 

Saviour and mighty Holy Spirit, we praise 

you for your mercy and forgiveness. We 

thank you for the sacrifice of Jesus and His 

resurrection which offers mankind hope for 

the future. Amen.
