V: It was the summer of 1993. I was<br />

seventeen. I used to sneak into The Menagerie,<br />

a gay bar in Riverside. I had a<br />

fake ID, but everyone knew he wasn’t<br />

really seventeen. Menagerie owner,<br />

Madelyn, pulled me aside and told me<br />

she knew I was lying about my age.<br />

She demanded that I wouldn’t drink or<br />

she would ask me to leave. I happily<br />

obliged...well, for a while. A few weeks<br />

later I was caught drinking and Madelyn<br />

ask me to leave. I got real cocky with<br />

her and left, but not without arguing.<br />

A few days later it was reported that I<br />

was pulling tricks from around the bar.<br />

Madelyn approached me and allowed<br />

me back into the bar under one condition:<br />

that I would have to accompany<br />

her and a few friends and patrons with<br />

AIDS, to a viewing of the AIDS quilt.<br />

And she wanted me to make an appointment<br />

to talk to a friend of hers. I<br />

agreed. My life changed forever.<br />

L: What happened?<br />

V: Fast forward to 2004. I said Madelyn<br />

Lee saved my life. And if it wasn’t for<br />

a loving caring woman like her, I would<br />

not still be here. She taught me about<br />

<strong>LIVE</strong>MAGAZINETV 35
