Picking ourselves up
by Dr. David Yudell
For many of us connected to Marjory Stoneman Douglas life, as
we knew, it has changed. It has happened before but this time
it feels different. The stories of strength, heroism, and the youth
led change movement are awe-inspiring. The pain and traumatic
reactions that lie ahead for some will be heart breaking. The
intent of what follows is to help with the healing process.
Stress is all around us. Trauma is something different. Merriam-
Webster.com offers a definition that, when pieced together,
states: an agent/force that causes a disordered psychic or
behavioral state resulting in severe mental or emotional stress or
physical injury. If you or someone you know are in pain, find and
allow a professional to help. As health care professionals, we will
explore many areas.
One way is to engage in methods to reduce stress. Simply put,
the more positive outlets you engage in, the more your stress will
decrease. This will not erase trauma and the damage inflicted,
but it is an essential part of the healing. Exercise, join a club,
spend time with friends, and reconnect spiritually.
A second method is to resume your activities prior to the event.
This is often very difficult. Some call it a return to normalcy.
Getting back to the productive routines of our lives will heal
much of our distress. Whether it is work, family involvement, or
reengaging with the community, restarting a routine will help.
The third area is something that many teenagers have impressed
us with over the past month. I would call it a youth movement.
Finding a cause (or having one thrust upon you) and getting
involved is powerful. We have seen many students, their families,
and the surrounding community stepping up to provide support
in countless ways. Use their energy as a spark to offer your own
contribution. The results can be healing to yourself and others. P
Reflexology and its benefits
by Beth Black
Reflexology is often confused with massage, but reflexology
focuses on applying pressure to the feet, hands, and ears only.
Reflexologists rely on foot maps as a guide, with the premise
being that pressure applied to specific areas directly affects
certain organs in our bodies. The theory suggests that the
pressure applied to the feet, hands, and ears sends a message
from the extremities to the central nervous system signaling the
body to release tension and thus promoting better functioning of
the organs.
Reflexology benefits are believed to assist with treatments for
headaches, anxiety, and other ailments. Reflexology sessions
are designed to help people find a deep state of relaxation,
which will calm the mind, release tension, and relieve pain.
A reflexologist will work various parts of the body depending
upon the discomfort a person is feeling, but they don’t diagnose
or directly treat medical conditions. The objective is to release
harmful stress from the body so it can operate more efficiently. P
