EARTH DAY OCEAN CONSERVANCY: by Bill Johnson A vibrant voice in the battle for HEALTHY OCEANS Much has been said about the pollution of our oceans – especially about plastic waste that threatens marine life. But protecting our oceans is far more complex than just reducing plastic waste. Critical aspects of a successful effort to maintain healthy oceans are education, enactment of laws to protect them, and defending existing environmental protection laws. Among the people and organizations dedicated to that cause is Ocean Conservancy. Tom Allen, a former congressman from Maine, is now a volunteer co-chairman of the non-profit organization, which brings together nearly 100 scientists and experts in offices across the country. Because I was on Rep. Allen’s congressional staff, I know of his deep interest in environmental protection, and recently asked him for an update on his thinking. Is Ocean Conservancy primarily educating and informing the public and policymakers, or is it engaged in practical actions that have an immediate effect? You can’t have one without the other. An educated public and informed policymakers go hand-in-hand with practical action. Our dedicated experts educate the public and decision-makers on ocean issues. This advocacy has resulted in wins like the creation of national marine sanctuaries, a network of marine protected areas in California, important wildlife protections and legislation to fight ocean acidification. Personally, I have always had a great interest in ocean acidification, having helped write the Federal Ocean Acidification Research and Monitoring Act. Ocean Conservancy also organizes a vast volunteer network around the world on behalf of the ocean. Since 1985, the International Coastal Cleanup has mobilized more than 12 million volunteers to collect more than 228 million pounds of trash. The simple action of picking trash up from our beaches and waterways has an immediate positive effect on the health of our ocean. Is there one issue about the oceans that’s more critical than others? There’s no simple answer. Everything is interconnected in the ocean — remember it covers 70 percent of the Earth’s surface. When there’s a change to one part of the marine ecosystem, a ripple runs to many other parts. From rising ocean temperatures to overfishing, increasing ocean acidification to islands of trash – the challenge is taking a holistic approach that can improve the overall resilience of our ocean. engaging the business sector. The Trash Free Seas Alliance®, Closed Loop Partners and leading brands like Procter & Gamble, 3M, PepsiCo, and plastic makers from the American Chemistry Council and the World Plastics Council, have created a new funding mechanism to raise more than $150 million over five years to improve waste collection, sorting and recycling markets in Southeast Asia. Can you be optimistic about the future of the oceans? Yes, there are many challenges but we are working to make a difference. We are fighting for coastal communities and the ocean by opposing misguided proposals to open offshore oil and gas development. We are fighting to protect funding for hurricane recovery, coastal resilience, and tsunami warning systems. We are inspiring people to take matters into their own hands through International Coastal Cleanups. We are gaining ground on issues like climate change, adaptation and resilience through efforts like the International Alliance to Combat Ocean Acidification. Around the world, people are becoming more engaged with the issues the oceans face, and I believe that is a reason to be optimistic. Everyone has a role to play. The first step is to learn more about our oceans and what you can do to make a difference at www.oceanconservancy.org and on Ocean Conservancy’s Facebook page, on Twitter, and on Instagram. P Take, for instance, ocean acidification. The oceans are absorbing more CO2 than ever before, and therefore, becoming more acidic. This means it’s more difficult for corals to grow, which leaves many small fish without a home, which causes fish populations to dwindle. When you add overfishing to the mix, we end up with a serious problem in the basic makeup of the marine ecosystem. Even the problems that seem like they’re not huge could have a bigger impact than you’d think. Is there any evidence of progress? Absolutely. Even though the political climate has been challenging for ocean advocacy, there has been progress on many fronts. States across the nation have put regional ocean plans into place, improving coordination between state, local and federal agencies. We’ve also made progress the PARKLANDER 63
