Renew, Refresh, Repurpose, Recycle… Relax! By: Annette Stebbins, Maple Bluff Resident WHEN THE GARDENS needs a model, I am ready to go. OK, I’m not talking about a nice coat, shoes and someone taking pictures! I’m talking about creating a home in a senior apartment allowing people to know that “hearth and home” can be created with their things in the security of a senior community, yet still offer an independent lifestyle. You may have heard of The Gardens on Madison’s near Westside, Olympic Village in Sun Prairie, McKee Park Apartments in Fitchburg as well as Independent Health Care, a Home Health Agency, Meals on Wheels and In-Home Care Services. Did you know that they all come under one umbrella? Well they do, it’s Independent Living, Inc.(ILI), and it’s a pretty big umbrella. ILI serves older adults and their families throughout Dane County by providing housing, home health care and in home services. A few years ago, Rita Giovannoni, CEO called me to see if my design company, Beauccoup Ideas LLC, could help with some design projects. They were adding new 2 bedroom apartments at The Gardens. They needed help with basic design work, staging and repurposing Home Care All is not the same. We blended existing furniture with donated items to create a refreshed and recycled new look. Some very thoughtful residents, community businesses and charitable organizations donate money for some of our larger projects and others donate gently used furniture, artwork and accessories to help pull our projects together. Others volunteer their time to ILI’s mission of service to older adults by delivering Meals on Wheels, helping with resident focused projects or working in our greenhouse and gardens. Well, I am now working part-time for this great organization and I am looking for donations of lightly used furniture, artwork, accessories and character pieces to continue our work to keep living areas fresh with items donated from the community. It is so delightful to be part of an organization committed to recycling and efficient use of our community resources. It takes someone special to be a dad. ~Author Unknown Fathers play a very special role in our lives – a role that is irreplaceable. As mentors, guides, teachers, and some of the best playmates around, dads are something special. The third Sunday of June has been set aside as a day to celebrate and honor their presence in our lives. It is on this day that dads, grandpas, and those who are not our fathers but have stepped into that role are shown how very much they mean to us. Whether a typical Father’s Day at your home consists of a meal of his favorite foods, is a day where the family partakes in his favorite game, or if Dad is honored by a day off to do what he likes best, the message is the same: “Dad, we love you for who you are and we thank you for all you do.” We would love to hear your favorite stories or memories you have shared with your father, or just a simple note to say why he’s so great!
