Peggy and I are so honored to have been asked to chair our community’s
“March of the Living Mission,” which coincides with Yom Hashoah
(Holocaust Remembrance Day) and culminates at Auschwitz
Concentration Camp. As we join with thousands of participants from
around the world, including members of our Temple Emanuel family,
we will walk in the same footsteps that our people walked in as the
concentration camp was being evacuated in 1945.
April 2018
Nisan & Iyar 5778
For us, it will be a very personal walk, remembering family members we
never met because of Auschwitz and places like it. We will, however, also
walk with so much pride – pride in you, our vibrant living Jewish
community at Temple Emanuel.
It was three and a half years ago that I had a “Torah Moment.” The
Torah was telling me …”you have to go back to Berlin, retrace the steps
of your mother and mother-in-law, and on Kristallnacht, November 9.”
At the time, I was convinced that I wouldn’t like it … the place … the
people. Germany was the home my parents were forced to flee, and it
was the death place of my grandparents and relatives. Yet, I was drawn
there because I was looking for something. It was there that I realized
why I made the journey and what I was seeking: namely, to claim, fulfill
and complete my name. I began as a reluctant traveler, and ended up
connecting with my name and other names.
This mission is all about connecting with names. Each of us will be
literally carrying a name of one innocent cut off before his or her time.
One’s name is sacred, and nothing can destroy a good name.
With our hands and our names, we will raise high their legacy. We will
use our yad v’shem, our hand and our name for them. Without a doubt,
our special mission will impact our lives profoundly, and we will return
home enriched and ennobled.
We look forward to sharing our experiences with you upon our return.
immediately. God forbids Moses, Aaron, and his surviving sons from mourning but commands the rest of the
people to do so. Priests are told not to drink alcohol before entering the sacred Tabernacle.
The One Mistake You Make Every Time
You Walk In To Temple Emanuel
About a year and a half ago, as word got out that I was to
be the next president of Temple Emanuel, I was presented
with a challenge by many of you, the congregants of TE.
You wanted to know: What is the vision? Where are we
going? What are we doing? Why, as a congregant, am I
here?
Well, it was challenge accepted. I put together an amazing
team, and we crafted a thoughtful and passionate vision
for now and our future that I try to model every day as
your president. It says,
Temple Emanuel will be a leader in the South Jersey community and the
Reform Jewish movement as a vibrant, thriving and engaging
congregation. We will continue to honor our heritage by providing a
place that nurtures a cohesive community and fosters our relationships
with God, Torah and Israel. Our collective commitment will ensure that
we, in our own time, pass along Temple Emanuel to our future
generations with the same love, devotion and faith that our past
generations did for all of us. Each person entering our space is an integral
part of the Temple Emanuel fabric, and we are proud to say that however
someone defines family, they will find a Jewish home at Temple Emanuel.
So, what’s the one mistake?
You don’t realize that by being a member of Temple Emanuel, you are part of something
amazing. You don’t realize that your membership includes a community of people who are
passionate about making the world a better, more peaceful place and who are there for you
to help celebrate the happy times and support you when they are not. And you don’t realize
that, as a member of Temple Emanuel, you matter and that Temple Emanuel is glad you are
one of the threads that make up our fabric.
Letter from the President: Jessica Manelis
So walk through the doors. Join the excitement. Get involved. Join a committee. Come to an
event. Worship with us on Shabbat. Make a difference.
Remember, a mistake made twice is a decision.
See you at TE!
Our B’nai Mitzvah
April 14, 2018: Devon Stopek son of Jennifer and Lance Stopek
Devon currently attends Beck Middle School. He enjoys
Language Arts and Physical Education, but his true passion
is soccer. Devon plays soccer for the U13 Philadelphia Union
Academy team and dedicates many hours to training. Devon’s
goal for the future is to become a professional soccer player.
He shares this love of soccer with his dad, Lance and his older
sister, Emma.
For Devon’s bar mitzvah project, he intends to raise money for
two soccer related charities. They are Soccer Without Borders
and Charity Ball. Charity Ball is a global soccer charity that
provides new, FIFA-quality soccer balls to kids in
poverty-stricken communities around the world. Devon plans
on donating a portion of his bar mitzvah gifts to this great
organization.
Devon is eager to become a bar mitzvah and follow in his family’s footsteps. He has been
working very hard to achieve this milestone and looks forward to sharing his special day with
family and friends at Temple Emanuel.
B’nai Mitzvah
April 21, 2018: Evan Pfeiffenberger son of Wendi Pfeiffenberger
Evan is a Seventh grader at Beck Middle School who loves math
and is a proud member of Beck’s soccer team. Evan enjoys
being a big brother to his sister Ryan. When he is not playing
soccer, tennis or flag football, he spends his time watching his
favorite sports teams which include all of the Philadelphia and
Syracuse University teams.
For Evan’s Mitzvah Project, he raised funds for the National
Brain Tumor Society. This is very close to Evan’s heart because
his father died of a brain tumor when Evan was 6 years old.
Evan organized “Team Pfeiffenberger”, 35 people who walked
in Philadelphia’s “Race for Hope” last October. Evan raised
over $5,000 with the help of his family and friends.
Evan is excited to become a bar mitzvah as it means he is
transitioning from a boy to a man in the Jewish religion. He is looking forward to his special
day.
To the Men of Temple Emanuel,
Our last brunch, which was held on March 11, was our Sports Trivia
Throw-down, hosted by Temple Emanuel’s own David Horowitz. In
addition, we had the privilege of hearing sports reporter Ed Benkin
speak about his recent book, “The First 50 Super Bowls: How Football’s
Championships Were Won.” Congratulations to our winning trivia
team, and a huge thank you to everyone who stepped up to make this
wonderful event happen.
Professional Men’s Club Staff, Board & Group Contacts
During the upcoming months, we have a lot of exciting programming
for our members to enjoy as we approach the end of our season. April 13 kicks off our Men’s
Club Retreat, which will be held at Resorts in Atlantic City. This two-night event spans
everything, including brotherhood, bonding, spirituality, prayer, reflection, and, of course,
some good food and fun. We truly hope you will consider joining us. Please look for more
information on this event on our Facebook page, or email/call me directly. This is an
opportunity unlike no other to bond and really get to know your Men’s Club brothers. Those
who have attended this event always say it has greatly exceeded their expectations, and this
opportunity cannot be replicated in any other environment.
During May, we are planning a brewery tour and dinner at the Berlin Brewing
Company. Please stay tuned as the date for this event will be announced very shortly. And, as
our weather gets warmer, we are also working on finalizing a family mini-golf outing. Details
for this event will be announced soon as well.
Looking ahead...
April 13-15: Men’s Club Retreat
April 29: Brunch with guest speaker Cantor Neil
accolades for its meaningful purpose and success.
Prime Timers
You know Uno, right? The Maple Shade restaurant is where Temple Emanuel’s Prime Timers will
hold their next monthly lunch on Thursday, April 19, at 12:30 pm.
The group’s Monthly Munchers Alphabet Antics excursions to restaurants from A to Z is nearly
It is March 4 and I am sitting at the Marriott Hotel in Nashville, TN.
And yes, the weather is warm and I missed the Nor’easter. The WRJ
(Women of Reform Judaism) Leadership Conference has just concluded.
I figured what better use of my time after an intense, inspirational,
spiritual and invigorating convention than to write my April Light
article? So many things to say, so many places to start, so much to
share. I feel I could write a book on the issues I learned about, the
eloquent speakers, and the ruach – the spirit – of 350 Jewish women
celebrating Shabbat and Purim together. As not to overwhelm me or
you, I am going to share only one thing, the “big picture.”
Do we really understand why Temple Emanuel Sisterhood is a member
of WRJ? Let me answer this simply. Our membership adds voice to the advocacy and
outreach of WRJ. Here are some specifics. Does your child attend a URJ camp? Harlem, 6
Points or Kutz? Perhaps they participate in NFTY and are finding their voice as a Jewish teen
leader? Have they attended the RAC (Religious Action Center for Reform Judaism) advocacy
program? Did you know that WRJ financially supports these programs and in part, makes it
possible for your child to be engaged in these programs? Does your child or grandchild, niece
or nephew, receive Jewish books from PJ Library? We -- you and I -- help support this
program by being members of WRJ. Do you feel strongly about social justice issues – LBGTQ
rights, pay equity, women’s health care and immigration, or Jewish pluralism in Israel and in
the world? If you answered “yes” to any or all of these, then know that your Temple Emanuel
Sisterhood membership is supporting these issues, since WRJ fights on a local, national and
international level on our behalf. So you see, we are bigger than 1101 Springdale Road, Cherry
Hill, NJ. We are more than playing Bag Bingo, or enjoying our Sisterhood under the Sukkah, or
learning about Guatemalan Midwifery. We do all of these things, and we also are a part of the
bigger picture, the bigger goal of changing ourselves, changing our communities and changing
the world. We fund-raise, we educate, and we share our Jewish connections so that we can be
a small part of the big picture. We should be proud of ourselves because we are the Women of
Reform Judaism.
February Thank Yous!
It seems that every month is a busy month, and March was no
exception. Sisterhood succeeds because of the brilliant leaders and
dedicated volunteers who head programs. Michele Speier and Betsy
Morgenstern organized a spiritually meaningful and rejuvenating
Sisterhood Retreat Weekend. The hours spent on the planning were
realized throughout the weekend. Todah Rabah.
Thank you also to Karen Ginsburg and Sheila Cosminsky for their
tireless work to bring the Her Seder to the Temple Emanuel
Sisterhood community. It was a fabulous evening celebrating the
Exodus from Egypt as only women can recall. The Seder was led by
our very own Karen Ginsburg and Renee Siegel. Their elegance and
leadership was evident to all.
Our Passover Wine Sale was a success thanks to those who
participated in the sale. Thank you for continuing to support our
Mini Monet, Pre-school Picasso and Small Seurat, no matter what you call
them, our little artists will be on full display when our annual art show
debuts on April 20th. The art show’s theme this year is Israel in honor of the
Jewish state’s 70th birthday.
The Israel experience will continue as we celebrate Yom Ha’atzmaut with
a trip to Israel. The students will “visit” many of the cities and enjoy a few
tastes of our beautiful homeland. Let’s hope the flight is on time because we
have a lot to see.
The month will end with another yearly event…the JDRF walk-a-thon. We will raise money
while walking, jumping, leaping and skipping our way around our beautiful school.
The Pre-School at Temple Emanuel
We have a wonderful summer planned for our campers at Kamp Kayeetz. The theme this
year is “Rock on”. The children will learn about rocket ships and outer space, rocks and the
animals that live under them and rock and roll just to name a few. Please call the Pre-school
April is a very busy month in Religious School learning about Yom Ha’Atzma-ut,
Israel’s Independence Day. Our Hebrew students will also discuss Yom
HaZikaron, a day of remembrance dedicated to all the fallen soldiers who have
served in Israel’s defense. We end our discussions between these two
commemorations with a Ben Yehuda Fair where we sample Israeli food and learn
Israeli dancing.
We are also getting ready for our annual art show, “Blooming with Acceptance.”
This is in conjunction with our No Place for Hate theme where students, from all
grade levels will have work displayed.
The Pre School and Religious will be sponsoring our Israeli Family Lego Event this month on
Friday, April 20 with Bricks4Kids. You will be able to take a tour of Israel and make different
creations in each area. You will be able to sample Israeli food at dinner.
High School students will have the opportunity to meet with Anat Hoffman who helped organized
“Women of the Wall” an organization fighting for women’s right to pray aloud, with Torah scrolls and
tefillin, at the Kotel.
Don’t forget to get your car washed on April 29 by the 5th grade students who are raising money for
Combine chick peas with onion. Add parsley,
beating an egg and spices. Mix in blender. Add
breadcrumbs until mixture forms a small ball
without sticking to your hands. Form chick-pea
mixture into small balls about the size of a
quarter. Flatten balls slightly and fry until golden
brown on both sides. Drain falafel balls on paper
towels. Serve individually with toothpicks or as
a sandwich with chopped tomato, cucumber,
lettuce, onion, hummus, and tahini inside pita
bread. This recipe makes about 24 falafel balls.
I’m Eli Weitzman, and I am the TEFTY programming vice
president for the 2017-2018 year. This past month, we visited
L’Taken, a weekend social-justice seminar in Washington, D.C.,
held by the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism (the
legislative branch of the URJ). Here, we teens were able to learn
about, and grapple with, the challenges facing society today. We
arrived on Friday night for Shabbat, then got right into learning
about social-justice issues. They included gun-violence
prevention, LGBTQ rights, reproductive rights, and climate
change. Throughout the program, we also learned about the
challenges in the government on passing legislation, and how a
bill becomes a law. The whole weekend concluded on Monday
when we headed to Capitol Hill and were able to lobby in the
Senate and House offices on our issues.
On February 11, a group of women discussed a topic that has been in the news a great deal:
#Me Too, and #Times Up. The first order of business is to state that whatever is talked about
in that kind of setting stays there. So, with that said, I’m not going to share the content of
the discussion. What was so special about that group was the difference in ages. It gave us
an opportunity to discuss how things were, how they are, and how we thought they should
be and maybe could be in the future. I look forward to many more opportunities for open
discussions about those topics that impact our emotions and our understanding of events.
The Mindful Matters committee is working on programming for next year. Let us know if
there is a particular topic you would like to hear more about, or perhaps suggest a topic for
an informal discussion.
